Album artwork and the designers behind them
I've been reading 2 books by Storm Thorgerson, "Eye of the Storm" and "Mind Over Mater: The Images of Pink Floyd"
Great books and beautiful layout of his artwork. Storm discusses and disects the making of his creations. Both books include alternate artwork for his clients and a colorful outlook on the record industry suits, who, try to annoy him in every way. "Eye of the Storm" is sadly out of print, but if you look in the right spots, you can easily obtain it. The other book, is readly available from any bookstore, make sure it's the most recent one, as it has info on the forth coming Pulse DVD layout and the recent issue of Dark Side of the Moon. Another book I recomend is, "Views" by Roger Dean. Roger is that guy who did all those fantasy album covers for Yes during the 70's. It too, is out of print, but can be easily found. I'm wishing that Hugh Syme would release a book of his own. Considered the 4th member of Rush, his album artwork is quite good and rivals Storms work. Anyone have any favorite album artwork and/or designers? |
I miss album art.
The days when you could get something worth framing and music to go with it are long gone. CD's have no style and even the fold outs don't meet up to the beauty of a double album cover. |
I should have put a few of my favoite album covers on here.
The Ice-T Power album was a kick in the ass. http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/S...399390n107.jpg Most of Kate Bush's albums had amazing art work. http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de...verforever.jpg The Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon has been copied so many times it is forgotten how original it was. http://www.dinosaurdays.co.za/top/dark.jpg |
A couple of my favorites:

Did the same guy that made the pink floyd covers do the one for audioslave's album?

Hehe, as soon as I saw this thread I knew it was going to be about goold ol Storm.
Looks like I might have to track down Mind Over Matter now. |
In the age of MP3, it makes me wonder if album designs and designers will be a thing of the past. None of the less, I realized Tool has some awesome packaging. I also like some the old Blue Note Records designs. It's a good thing they still use that very same design to this very day.

just bought 10 LPs today for the bargain price of $10.50 or thereabouts and was admiring some of the album jackets when I was browsing the goodwill collection.
|
Storm Thorgerson and his Hipgnosis crew have done some of the most memorable album covers out there. I might be biased because I'm a gigantic Pink Floyd fan, but you do have to admit he's done some amazing work.

s'all about Pushead
|
I'm not sure about this, but I believe Roger Dean also did the Uriah Heep covers.
|
Meatloaf - the Bat Out of Hell albums.
I forget the name of the guy who did them, but they have awesome artwork! |
Soulfly's Primitive album art is incredible
|
Say what you like, I've always liked the Asia album covers.
(Boston and Kansas had some cool ones too, I sometimes buy records that I have CDs of Just for the Huge album art) |
Alex Grey did the art for Tool's Lateralus, the tour as well as the CD art. Both Alex Grey and Tool are amazing, the combination is bliss.
