Help my band decide on a name.
Hey everybody. The band I am in is trying to decide on a band name, and I thought I would see what you guys thought. We play alternative - some poppy, some trippy. Try to do some pop sounding rock with some Pink Floyd vibe thrown in. I guess it sort of varies from song to song .
Anyway, I like Harrison Parks, but the drummer is worried about the work Parks because of Linkin Park. I say fuck them (I'm not trying to put them down - just saying not to let them influence what name we pick). So he comes up with Harrison Underground, but the bass player and singer thinks it sounds too much like funk. Once again I say fuck that, we'll make the sound like us once people hear it. I know it is very easy to get sidelined suggesting crazy-funny band names, but I am seriously looking for good suggestions here. What do ya think? |

Harrison underground sounds like it could turn in to a really bad Velvet Underground covers band. I'd buy Harrison Parks' album, though. Until you mentioned the LP connection I didn't see it, and I don't think it'd be that much of an issue.

Um, hows about Harrison Underpants? No? I didn't think so...
Well I guess Harrison Parks sounds okay, except that people reading the name, before having seen you, will tend to expect a lead guy, ya know, Harrison himself (or perhaps the Harrison/Parks jazz duo?). Which is fine if either you do have a main frontman/songwriter type, or you don't care what peeps expectations are. Or you enjoy throwing people off. But then again, I don't know if the public was expecting a dude named Floyd would be in PF... jeez I dunno anymore. Good luck! |

Yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that none of our names are Harrison or Parks. I was driving through a town near Harrison once, and after the song was over the announcer came on and said "Harrison parks and recreation", then after a long pause he finished his sentence. My wife(the bass player) and I both looked at each other and said "I thought that was the band name". After we laughed for a minute I figured why shouldn't it be our band name, lol. I appreciate the suggestions and input very much.

Just stick some random number in your band name. That's what all the kids want:
Matchbox 20 Blink 182 Sum 41 7 Mary 3 3rd Eye Blind 311

Man, I now hate that "Reset Form" button.
If you're worried about sounding too funky, go for a simple name. Something like "Parliament". Neither of those names above really strikes me. Luckily, since your style of music doesn't have any real restrictions as to names, you could probably pick something just as random and get the same mileage from it. I've always been partial to "Crotch Weed" and "Shopping With Gozer". |

Harrison Parks sounds kind of emo to me, and the Linkin Park connection was the first thing I thought of.
I always wanted a band named Brown Thumb. but you can't have that one. You should try for something fresh sounding, like "White Stripes" or "Strokes" if it has a verb people will like it. Or something tough sounding like "Harrison Death Squad" or "Harrison Suicide Assistance Line"

If you go with either of them, re-spell it so it becomes a synonym. For example, if you choose Harrison Park, then actually call yourselves "Hairy Zone Park," or something like that. The possibilities are endless.
I was in a band once named "Saucy Jack," but we were worried about copyright entanglements from the Spinal Tap people, so we changed it to Sausage Act. Same thing when you say it aloud.

As for the original post, I'd go with Parks; I think Underground already features in a lot of band names.

My first thought when I read this was Harrison Bergeron, which is a Vonnegut short story. It's a powerful assoication to use, but it doesn't really match "poppy/trippy alternitive".

question... I'm working on setting up a label, just getting the funds together and have a degree in the music business. yes it exists. lol. Anyway, I was wondering where you came up with Harrison or Parks? I like the name, although it does sound like a solo act. So that may be a little misleading to people. I myself will go see anything, but I have a bunch of friends that do look at the name and don't like solo artists. So you may want to make it sound more like a band.
or use the name, and rule he world... then who cares. its just getting there is the hard part. good luck!! |
