Bob Mould fans?
I'm just wondering if anyone else listens to Bob. I'm going to see him here in Chicago in a couple of weeks (Goose Island Festival on the 15th for anyone local), but I'm wondering what his recent shows have been like. His website says that it will be a solo accoustic show, which are usually very cool, but I haven't seen him since the Last Dog & Pony tour. Should I expect a load of the electronica Modulate crap or is he actually going to sing?
If you've seen him live recently, let me know. If you've never heard of him, pick up an album called "Workbook" and prepared to be blown away by the cellos and electric guitars. |
As a fan of both his solo stuff, like Workbook which is awesome, and his Sugar stuff, I wanted to add to your post in an effort to get people to listen to Bob.
Like you said, the focus of the live shows can be unpredictable. I'm glad to hear he's out touring though. For those who are just checking this out, Bob goes back to the band Husker Du, which I liked ok but never loved. Thanks for listening. |
Yep. I've been listening since Candy Apply Grey. I really like the solo stuff, and I've seen Sugar live a couple times, but he kinda lost me on this last one (Modulate). He rarely comes down South.

I caught Bob on the Modulate tour at Berkeley in boston - and the songs sound MUCH better live. Unexpectedly this was pretty damn rockin for a guy with his guitar & a bunch of samples.
It was no Sugar, but what else is? |
I'm a big fan of Husker Du, but haven't heard any of his work after them.
|
He put out 2 great solo albums ("Workbook" and "Black Sheets of Rain"), then formed a band called Sugar in late 91. They released 4 albums and then broke up just as they were about to really hit the big time. He took a little time off and then released 2 more albums in 7 years ("Bob Mould", "Last Dog & Pony Show") before hanging up the electric guitar. He released another album, "Modulate", that I classify as electronica crap, but hey, that's me.
"Workbook" is a must-have for any collection, IMHO. |
HUSKER DU BABY!!!!!
I cry whenever songs from the warehouse is on the turn table!!!! I likes some of the sugar tracks, but they wore thin pretty quick. He has a powerful voice. |
workbook is AWESOME.
i'm in chicago - did you ever see him at metro by himself? blistering. from what i've heard of his recent shows, i don't even want to go anymore. don't wanna taint my memories! goose fest is always a good time, tho. |
'mats?
any replacements fans in here?
|
im a huge huge mats fan.
I stand by the notion that Hootenanny was their best album, though most disagree with me. |
Huge Husker Du fan, also really liked Sugar. As far as solo stuff, I like everything but "Modulate", but I guess he is just trying new things. Hopefully, he will return to his roots.
And yes I am also a replacements fan I happen to be listening to "All Shook Down" right now. |
Only Mould I've ever heard is Zen Arcade (Husker Du). LOVE that album. One of the few cds that I bought in the 80s that I still listen to regularly.
|
Jimk: he's playing at the Goose Island Fest on Friday night if you're interested. The website says that it's "solo acoustic", so I'm going to take my chances.
