Why you listen to certain music?
i was just wondering why people develope different tastes in music. The question more relates to why we like certain music over others, would there be anything genetic about it?
or is it primarily an enviroment and upbringing influence. I feel, sometimes, music tatse is also reflected from some personaility types/traits, i guess the main one is that pop music generally = superficial and materialistic. Also my final thought, was do you think poeple could be "conditioned" to like music? i feel such is the case with mainstream radio, but for anyone else, who has an open mind when it comes to art and music, do you think you could be conditoined to like something, or is there something genetic in us that doens't allow it? sorry if this is a little disjointed, just a few whimsical thoughts. |

I think people pick some music based on influences all around them. Then they beleive that everything else sucks and won't give it a chance.
I listen to different music depending on what mood, not what's cool, or too old, or too new, or whatever. |

I listned to alot of metal when i was younger.. it was because i was angry .. and wanted to be on the outside of what most peeps listen to.. and the music touched and brought out a certain power .. that I was unable to attain on my own.. ..... i think.
then metal started to get .. .. ummm.. Gay... soooo.. I started listening to Reggea.. ummm.. i cannot spell it.. but i listened to it alot.. .. then i moved onto Homo stuff.. stuff I used to really rank people to the dogs for listening to.. like.. depeche mode.. and the cure.. and ...The smiths.. even bands like eurasure.. sp? . .and bronski beat.. and prince... (i was doing alot of X at that period.. LOL' ... and now... I own .. and listen to all of it.. depending on my mood.. then i even got into some country because of a girl i was dating.... nowadays.. I am METAL as FUCK.. but still listen to all of that stuff .. plus.. sarah McGlauchlin .. sp? ... and tori amos.. and.. .. the point is... I listen to all kinds of music nowadays.... .. ummm.. what was the question again? hahahahaha. I want to mention here.. that .. when I say that certain bands.. are 'homo' .. I am not at all homophobic.. or .. a hater of any persons.. .. it just seems to be a way to classify that music.. please do not take offense.. because none was meant.. .. honestly Last edited by 90degree; 07-28-2003 at 09:56 PM.. |

I like listening to a lot of rock now a days because the lyrics and music mean something and convey certain feelings. That way, depending on how I'm feeling, I can just pop in the right CD and be set.

Also, i guess that anyone who labels themselves as a certain music listener or type are generally shallow and close minded. |

i listen to a lot of everything, like most people, but i know what i like when i hear it, and for the most part that tends to fall into the 'punk' category, though i hate to label it that way, because if i mentioned a list of bands as examples, there'd be 400 people telling me what is and isn't punk, which is emo, which is screamo, which is pop punk, which is just plain pop...
what it comes down to is that i listen to what i listen to because i like the sound of it. i like songs with quality lyrics, but i'd much prefer a stupid song with loud, fast and simple, punkish chords behind it over something like, say... fountains of wayne - good songs, lyrically, but nothing behind it, so i can't get into it. |

I have found that over time my tastes have become broader and broader. I have also found that different music can enhance or create a mood. I used to be a bit of a music snob. The stuff I liked (alternative stuff) was simply better than what others were listening to. But as I got older and was exposed to more music, I found that there is great music all over the place. I really love music sharing, because it allows me to listen to all sorts of music before I decide what I really want to buy. My once very limited cd collection now is quite eclectic.

most people just listen to the same stuff over and over, and disregard lots of other things (most folks dismiss country) for the plain reason that they are prejudice. Prejudice (and conceit, a lot of the time) of sorts is really what keeps anyone from enjoying all kinds of music.
If it jives with me, I'll listen to it. I listent to pop, classical, metal, reggae, rock, rap, hardcore, punk, funk, techno, anything that jives me. If you just give it enough time, you can dig anything. So if anything, it's not your music that shows your personality, its your personality that determines your music. |

I used to not listen to anything, but then I started listening to what my sister did. She got me hooked on Garth Brooks and I went from there into country.
A friend of mine suggested Lynyrd Skynyrd, which I got hooked on immediatly, and went from there into classic rock. Now I can listen to country, blues, rock, some jazz, and a tiny bit of pop. Also, A Clockwork Orange is an awesome movie. "I'm singin' in the rain. Just singin' in the raaiiiinnnn..."

heh. i conditioned myself to like punk/indie stuff. my first general admission show was from a riot grrl band from my hometown [which is also my quote from my signature but thats beside the point] i'd never heard of... but i LOVED them. and i just became fascinated by indie non-mainstream music and got into some of the local punk scene too. so i got some free shit [cds] at a punk show once and just started playing that nonstop until i loved it. music always grows on me after awhile. but just the whole scene appealed to me to begin with anyway.

I listen to anything except country and most rap. Country is so irritatingly twangy and the lyrics are not at all interesting to me. Rap usually just grates on me. I'll endure snippets of rap videos for a glimpse of the ho's an' bitches.

What I personally don't understand is the people who listen to what they listened to when they were teenagers FOREVER...
Your musical tastes can't CHANGE or EXPAND? I had a conversation once with a friend I hadn't seen in 10 years. He was telling me about this hair band. I replied, "You know, back in the day, I probably would have LOVED this. But now... Nah..." And my friend looked at me like I was a two headed ogre. I don't get it...

Two words. Attitude adjustment. You know how when you some times have a truly crapalicious day, and are coming home on the subway, with a permanent scowl on your face and sparks flying out of your ears? Well, some times the right music can really save those innocent bystanders from certain destruction if I spontaneously combust.
Music helps me focus. Different bands work for different moods. I've generally noticed that the better I am feeling emotionally, the slower and mellower the music I prefer to listen to (ie: GYBE). When the mood and music click together, work goes by SO much faster and more efficiently. I'd get awesome ideas that I would normally have to brainstorm for weeks over. These days, If I feel like crap, I'll queue up some In Flames or Blind Guardian.

I got into jamband music years ago, and I think that has conditioned me not to like a lot of other music. I crave long experimental jams and get bored by three minute songs that are played the same way every time. I love going to shows not knowing what to expect. Although the "jamband" scene is pretty limmited, they do encompass a wide variety of styles. Rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, electronic, etc.
I guess I think that musical taste is a combination of nature and nurture, as most things are... |
