Beck - Sea Change

Okay...I admit I am a bit late on this one...forgive me....but I am just starting to listen to this album...

What do you guys think?

Tom Thumb 07-25-2003 01:12 PM

It's obviously still Beck, but it's only good, not great. Too many songs are hookless and blend into one another, and I find the (over)production irritating sometimes. Still, "Lost Cause", "The Golden Age" and "Little One" are all great.

kLear 07-25-2003 03:41 PM

A favourite of mine on that CD is "Already Dead." But like Tom Thumb, it's not great, but it's not bad neither.

GunslingerCold 07-25-2003 06:14 PM

I like the cd but its definately not his best.

y2ktenchi 07-25-2003 06:49 PM

I think it's some of his best work. I definitely like it a lot more than "Midnite Vultures".

rockzilla 07-25-2003 07:02 PM

I thought it was great. I needed a good break-up album at the time, and Sea Change was just what the doctor ordered. Although I still listen to Odelay more.

Ganguro 07-27-2003 12:49 AM

i really really liked sea change as well.. never really liked beck that much as an artist, always heard he was decent behind teh boards.. and never liked country.. but that album really piqued my interest.

teflonian 07-27-2003 01:20 AM

I like Beck, and I like mellow stuff. So, I thought I would really like the album... Unfortunately nothing really grabbed me. I was pretty dissapointed.

zenmaster10665 07-27-2003 06:45 AM

I personally am pleased to see Beck put together an album demonstrating his songwriting. A great chronicle of a broken heart...and some nice country-laced tunes.

Guess I'm doing fine is brilliant...a haunting tale full of a melancholy sarcasm that openly lays the singer's open wounds out for all the world to see...

All in all, I think it is great...I think we might see a new phase of Beck...

Love this record. Have you heard the Flaming Lips cover the Golden Age yet?

floonine 08-06-2003 05:51 AM

I think this album is one of the most beautiful records I have ever heard, but I don't think I would have thought so if I hadn't listened to it in my room, with headphones, all by myself. I recommend it to anyone who is listening to it for the first time, because the album is very musically simple but has little things here and there that really try to tell you what beck is feeling (in my opinion, anyway). Some listeners don't like how simple it is in comparison to his last few, but I think its absolutely amazing.

I havent, but I will look for it online...

After realising that the Lips were opening for Beck, I started recognising bits of similarities (effects, etc) in Sea Change that mirrored those in Yoshimi...

The past two albums that have gotten the absolute most spins in my CD player have been Yoshimi and the Pink Robots and Sea Change....

Do you guys think that the Lips influenced Beck, or the other way around?

Jeff 08-06-2003 04:50 PM

This albums really, really good. I didn't expect this from him, but he pulled it off so well.

JoeyB 08-06-2003 05:43 PM

This cd is great in small doses. It's not that the songs are bad--it's just that after about 5 in a row, I'm either sleepy or suicidal. I understand that he has depth and range and, I believe, he was just coming off of a relationship break-up....however I still prefer his funkier side.

Good....just not great.

floonine 08-07-2003 06:20 AM

Yeah, Beck can really kick out the funk when he wants to, and Sea Change isn't really an album for him to dance to.

Didn't he tour with the Flaming Lips for this album? I think I saw him on austin city limits with those guys...

wwcd101 08-07-2003 11:09 AM

The CD is great.

Beck toured last year with the Flaming Lips, which I heard was awesome. I just saw him 2-3 months ago and loved it.

He continues to be fun to watch evolve. How many of you out there thought "Loser" was a one-hit wonder? I did.

Thanks for listening.

I think that The Lips influenced Beck first. I remember the first time I heard Sea Change - I heard Wayne & crew's stamp in there.

That being said - I think backing up Beck on tour did a lot for the band. They're selling out bigger venues now. Hell - they're even playing with the Dead...

wwcd101 08-08-2003 05:17 AM

Eris I agree with both your observations. One of those crazy symbiotic relationships, I guess.

Thanks for listening.

obediah 08-08-2003 10:21 AM

I really dig this CD. I like Beck and I like the style, and he's executed it well. Beck's strength is that he's able to take a genre of music and run with it. There aren't many creators of music like him.
