As for bass I'll give my nod to Les Claypool.
Man, you read my mind.... Just listen to the beginning of "Stone Free". The man was way ahead of his time! And how about Ronnie Montrose' motorcycle on "Bad Motor Scooter"? Of course we know his lead vocalist went on to jam with another great guitar player, How about "Ain't talkin 'bout love" with Eddie Van Halen

"Apposibly" by Apex Theory is a good one, also "Take You Away" by Lamb of God just sustains so well, and then the guitar tone of Dino Cazares formerly of Fear Factory has always been a favorite of mine, such as the song "Descent" off the Obselete albumn. by far it is their masterpiece albumn.

There is a band called The Mentors, and the guitarist, Sickie Wife Beater, plays that instrument like none I've ever heard before. Hard to discribe, but if you get a chance.

A song I've been diggin' lately for guitar sound patterns is Heart's , Magic man. That's got some cool guitar in it. Whoever was the lead guitar player for them was pretty awesome. No I'm not a wuss for liking a few Heart tunes, I just appreciate good tunes when I hear them.... : Þ

I like Duane Allman/Eric Clapton's slide guitar solos on Layla. It is by far the best slide guitar I've ever heard. They sort of weave in and out of each other and just create an awesome sound.

I love the guitar on both of 'em, no doubt about it.

This makes my head hurt...too many to choose from....ouch.

My first try: yeah, Eddie Van Halen - Aint Talkin Bout Love. Wow.

My second glance award: Joe Satriani...he's just got the sound.

My third-but-not-necessarily-last-on-the-list-place: anything by Pat Metheny. He just thinks different and its magic.

Best guitar pieces:

Van Halen: beginning of Mean Streets
Jesus & Mary Chain: I hate Rock n Roll solos
Steve Vai: Some Call it Sleep
Randy: Tonight solo off of Diary

Others may come to mind...

I enjoy the shimmering, airy guitar sound on any late issue Cocteau Twins album. I am also in agreement with bryan2766 and other posters about Hendrix.

Peace Frog by The Doors is great and has an awesome solo in it.
Any live Led Zepplin.
I also got a ton of Beatles ones, Revolver alone has some awesome licks like Taxman and George's backwards solo on I'm Only Sleeping (first ever). Savoy Truffle, Fixing a Hole, the Let It Be solo (album version).

I'm strangely obsessed with the small riff in George Harrisson's My Sweet Lord. (yes, that is very messed up)

his low string soloing stands alone.

Mark Knopfler's tone on Sultans of Swing is very smooth. Worth imitating, if you can.

Edit: Just re-read the title of the thread after posting the above.

Actually my favorite guitar sound is the bass guitar for either Tool or Yes.

Not really a guitar sound, but when my band was in the studio, we experimented with recording different sounds through my guitar's pickups. One of the cooler ones was a power drill. Talking or singing into the pickups can sound kinda cool too.

Mind you, this is not an intricate nor difficult to play guitar part, but I dare you to achieve the same tone.

Tool's "sober" intro has the most amazing tone I've ever heard.

the "Blues" Hendrix CD is truely a life changing experience... especially the "born under a bad sign" cover: he plays the head and then funks a groove so intense, it's a total eargasm every time...

I concur with the poster who said the beginning of hells bells - what a great song.

Another one of my favorites is in the song In My Time of Dying by Led Zeppelin. It's from 6:30 to 7:00, when Page flips the switch to change the octives on the guitar. He makes it fit in with the rest of the song very well.
