I've said it before and I'll say it again- I know I forgot some, that's where you guys come in.
Randy Rhodes was awesome
Cliff Burton was a bass player
I'm pretty sure slash was mentioned!

My personal favorite, far and away is Jimmy Page followed closely by Neil Young.
Maybe that's why my technique is so sloppy

Technically Les Paul is the greatest IMHO

What about Steve Craddock, of Ocean Colour Scene. Not old enough or dead enough to be legend yet, but he could kick the arse of most of the above. Shame he hooked up with such a crappy band.

The greates gutarists ever!

Its not a horribly long list, but perhaps you can help me lenghten it. I feel that some of the best guitarists that I have heard are:

Yngwie Malmsteen
Jason Becker (hes only 17 and he's fucking awesome)
Vinnie Moore
Steve Vai
Randy Roads

What do you think? Can we add some more?

Uhh.....Hendrix? Maybe you've heard of him? He sorta created modern guitar as you know it? I don't understand what people find so great about Yngwie and Jason Becker. Yeah, they can play fast and are pretty good at finger tapping but their music sounds like shit.

Anyways, my top 3....

Jimi Hendrix
John Frusciante
David Gilmour

Hey Doc34465

Long overdue for a reply but i haven't seen this topic for a long time.

I wasn't trying to say Kirk didn't deserve to be in the Guitar World Hall of Fame. He deserves it as much as anybody. However i do think that James is the better overall player. He wrote and preformed the solo in Nothing Else Matters and that is undeniably(dp?) one of the best solos the band has done. However, I do agree that James should let Kirk handle the fretwork on the faster stuff.

I haven't read the list entirely but has Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top been added at somepoint? If not he should be...his fretwork is amazing all the way around. Almost as cool as his beard.

Jason is alot older now; he was 17 when he made Perpetual Burn. He's definately my #1 favorate. Its too bad what happend to him. Now he composes his music with eye movement, if you havent checked out his site, listen to "Higher".

Yngwie, but not because of his speed; its his vibrato that I'll always love. I dont care for anything after Fire and Ice though.

I agree with Vinnie Moore "Minds Eye" is a great album.

Tony Macalpine

Al Dimeloa

Allan Holdsworth

Marty Friedman

The best is too hard to imagine, so I'll say, on completely different ends of the rock spectrum, Steve Howe and Leslie West. After listening to Close to the Edge by Yes, Steve Howe became a master in my eyes, and Leslie West is just pure emotion dripping from every note, the way rock was meant to be played.

IMHO, the name Kurt Cobain doesn't belong in the greatest guitarrists list. He's an okay guitarrist, and he has character, but come on...He's wirtten some of the worst solos ever, and his technique is average.
But that's just what I think.
Names that I think should be said more are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Albert King, John Renbourn.
My all time favorite is SRV. "Cold Shot, babe!"

Ritchie Blackmore is my guitar hero.

Listening to his work on the live album Made In Japan when I was 18
got me into playing the guitar myself.

Peter Green from the early Fleetwood Mac was also a real talent.

I agree with bobdobbs: Django Reinhardt!

The skill! (His left hand had the use of only two fingers)
The innovation! (His jazz quintet used no drums or rhythm section)
The influence! (Chet Atkins ranked him the #1 guitarist ever...)

Others that he somehow influenced include:
Jimi Hendrix
Allman Brothers Band
Jeff Beck
Carlos Santana
B.B. King
Jerry Garcia
Mark Knopfler
Les Paul
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Denny Laine
Robert Fripp
Steve Howe
Charlie Christian
Trey Anastasio
Tony Iommi
Willie Nelson

All you guitar lovers... pay tribute: listen to a Django Reinhardt recording if you haven't yet.
