Is anyone into local music?

I don't really hear people talk about local bands too much. I'm from the surrounding suburbs of Detroit, and we have some good local bands. Hell, I'm in one. Anyway, anyone into local bands? Is there a particular "scene" that is going on your area?

There's a band where I live called Copper who are amazing. I was very surprised when I found out they were local. Also, 10 Years is another pretty good band around here and believe me, we don't get many good rock acts around here (Yeah, I'm in the South).

There is a local band in back in the midwest that is amazing. The band's name is Hangnail. When I used to be in a band we played with them once, and they have really taken off since then.

There are several good bands in my local area.

Sev, while not strictly a local band to Richmond, is out of Washington DC and was actually starting to get some airplay nationally but I haven't heard much from them lately.

Presh-Us is an amazing metal band that hopefully will break out of the local market soon. Old school metal with complex riffs, plenty of power chords and a vocalist that can growl or sing out the lyrics. This is my favorite metal band right now.

Saturday Session is a trio of three insanely talented musicians, right now all they play is instrumentals but they will go somewhere as soon as the get lyrics and a singer.

The 2nd Floor, (melodic alterna-pop) hasn't around too long, but they are very good and destined to do something big some day.

St. Diablo is a touch-and-go thrash metal band. Some of their stuff is good, and some still needs some work, and there is some that they should stop playing altogether.

I am a huge proponent of supporting local music, so go out there and see who you will be listening to on the radio in a couple of years. Talk to them and one day you can say "I knew them when".

I'm in phoenix and this place has a ton of cool local bands...that last local show I went to was a battle of the bands type thing where a band called Bionic Jive was playing. bionic jive is pretty damn good. So are trik turner, jimmy eat world, authority zero and a band you haven't heard of yet called the format. All from a tiny little town on the east side of phoenix called mesa. We're pretty damn lucky here

We have a massive hardcore scene. Hardcore tends to thrive in isolated areas in the midwest, where nothing happens, and anything that does goes unnoticed.

<a href="http://www.solomono.com/home.htm">Solo Mono</a> is a good example of how well-nurtured it is.

REO Speedwagon came out of my hometown, but that is more of a sign stigma than a cause for boast.

Anything around here is all nu-punk, and I really don't care for that style of music. There is one RATM clone, but the lyrics are a terrible copy, totally devoid of feeling.

The local music scene in my area is made up of talentless alternative rocker wannabees, or kids with cracked versions of fruity loops who insist on giving electronic musicians a bad name. As a muso myself I'd never EVER promote myself in my home town. In a large city it'd be great, but here, huh uh, cultural draught. And yes, I'm allowed to be arrogant, because it really is that bad :P

It's kind of hard not to be into local music if you leave the house at all in NY. Let's see bands I'm into lately:

<a href="http://www.teepeerecords.com/badwizard/">Bad Wizard</a>
<a href="http://www.worldinferno.com/">The World Inferno/Friendship Society</a>
Live Girls! (no link)

And countless others, I can't remember at the moment....

Oh, besides my band:

I'm originally from DC, so of course I worship at the altar of Fugazi. I got to meet them once; it was the pinnacle of my pathetic high school existence. Now that I'm living in pittsburgh, I'm beginning to explore local venues and such. The Modey Lemon is pretty good, and Need New Body, althought they're from Philly, play here pretty frequently. I saw them on monday and they were great. Pittsburgh is underrated as far as culture/music is concerned. There are some really cool venues, it's just that the scene won't come out and knock you over the head with a 2x4, so people assume it isn't there and that our only entertainment options are steelers games and drinking.

I'm in Denver, which i thought had an okay scene, but lately I only seem to be seeing and hearing "jam" bands. Everyone trying to be Phish or MMW.
It could be the hippies from Boulder migrating south.

Sweet. The Killer Flamingo's rock. They used to be the house band at a bar about a half-mile from where I live. I also remember seeing their concerts on our public-access stations. And that was like 5 years ago.

Back in the late 80s-early 90s I ran the sound board for a local band. Got the gig 'cause the singer and drummer were good friends from high school. The band broke up a long time ago, but the singer is in another band now, called Tangent. They play in the Green Bay area.

I was thinking of posting this topic just as i stumbled accross yours!

I live in ottawa, ontario, and the scene around here at my age (high school - 16) is mostly emo-type music, something i personally hate, since my life doesnt revolve around failed relationships and such.

However, there is a fairly stong punk (read: streetpunk) and skinhead scene... well, there's a few cool punks i know of and less skins than you can count with on one hand. as for the local music, we had a pretty good hardcore band locally but they broke up . It would be nice for some people around here to start up a streetpunk / skinhead rock'n'roll band sometime soon, but i dont play instruments

anyone else from the Balto/DC area, or anywhere else in the mid-Atlantic region, who has seen/likes Laughing Colors? fantastic band to catch live, mostly because of their ridiculous guitarist and drummer, and they ain't too bad at the songwriting thing either.
