Dredg. Number one recommendation from me. Kudos to those who said them already.
A few others, if interested: Interpol, Kings of Leon, Mogwai, Pete Yorn.

Lacuna Coil is a joke. They are what 5 or 6 band members, all dressed in trench coats with their hair braided like nu metal idiots. The 3 guitarists or 4 or whatever just stood there, played a few notes every once and a while and seems like half of the music was pre recorded. And now they are on the radio? ACK. You want an amazing band eh? Just so happens I have one for you. Agalloch, hailing from Portland, Oregon. Sort of a post - black metal band, with some folk and other musical traits. You've got your screams, and your mix of clean, emotional singing. Each song is unique in its own way, but ties back into the other songs. 3 members, yet the greatest sound I have heard in years. John Haugm writes all the lyrics (which are amazing by the way) and composes all the songs. |

They're pretty good... but I just can't get over the fact that they sound WAYYYYY too much like The Who (their current hit 'Are You Gonna Be my Girl' pretty much is the same as 'My Generation'). They lose a few originality points for that but overall I've liked what I heard. A better (in my opinion) retro-style band out there these days is OK Go. They had a decent hit with Get Over It some months ago. They're excellent.

I second The Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy.
Stuart Hamm. Bass virtuoso, and a hell of a musician.

Just got finished trying to listen to Glassjaw and The Mars Volta. Of Glassjaw, I tried Siberian Kiss, Convectuoso and Cosmopolitan Bloodloss. I recognize the artistry, but not for me. Of Mars Volta, I tried the Bach Song (tape looping != music) and Wasting My Air (because he was making such good use of it. Not.)
Sorry folks, I wanted to like them, but, if one is going to scream when singing, one needs to scream land sing at the same time, ala Bruce Dickinson, not just howl like a skillsaw ripping plywood. Incidentally, Maiden Rulez! And a third for Reverend Horton Heat.

At this point..for "newer" bands, I totally recommend Hot Hot Heat.

the decemberists if you like mogwai, then you'll be blown away by EITS, in my opinion, the better group. "the only moment we were alone" off of "earth is not a cold dead place" is beautiful, so so beautiful. the decemberists are probably a deal more popular than EITS. they're good. castaways > her majesty btw |
