White Stripes

I personally love them, i think there a throw back to the good old days. But I talked to others, and guys most seem to like them. But every girl I've asked think they are annoying. What do you think, I think they are the best new band to come along in a long time.

They're by no means new, they've only recently become popular when "Fell In Love With a Girl" came out. They released other albums prior to White Blood cells, just didn't get much recognition.

I personally love them. Anyone who says they have no musical talent can go fuck themselves. They write good lyrics, they write great melodies, and they're great performers. No, Meg is not the best drummer of all time by any stretch of the imagination, but she gets the job done. As for Jack, you need to see the White Stripes live to understand what a great musician he is. He works his guitar to points where few other guitarists can go, seemingly effortlessly. He can solo and play rediculously intricate guitar lines, and he can do it WHILE SINGING (an INCREDIBLY hard thing to do). I think they deserve more respect from people who put them down all the time. They're really gifted.

i've seen them, and they kicked ass...but i really wish meg would do a little more, a few parts of the show she just hit a same drums and the thing see could have done would be hitting the bass drum twice not just once

any drummers know what i am talking about

I agree with everything you said KWSN. The lyrics in all the songs acutally mean something and they are sung so well. For only 2 people in the band they produce a lot of sound too.

I also like them. In some ways, I think they remind me of some Violent Femmes stuff from the early to mid 80's. Simple arrangements, catchy hooks, funny lyrics.

Yeah i know they have been around since the early 90's, I didn't know about them till i got white blood cells when it came out. But now i own all 4 cd's. The lyrics are great, I can relate to alot of what he says. I have heard that their concert is the highest rated by critics.

The White Stripes own. Hands down. The things Jack can do with a guitar, while not particularly inventive, are used masterfully. He doesn't show off, he knows what stripped down rock and roll is, and he plays it.

They are really good. And while Meg isn't a fantastic drummer, she does a decent job singing on 'In the Cold Cold Night'. They'll always have a place on my playlist.

Absolutely amazing band. Definately one of my top five favorites. All four of their albums absolutely rocked my fucking socks off, and their concerts are completely awesome. The week long stint on Conan really impressed me. THey picked a great show to do it on, and really had fun with it.

Way, way, way overrated... I honestly can't stand them... I think the singer sounds like a really cracked out version of Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. In my eyes, they have no talent and I could honestly name 50 bands that I would rather have seen get signed.

By the way, I'm from Florida, there's tons and tons of great unsigned bands that play around here.

Overrated? Maybe if you'd listen to their cd's instead of judging the band based on the few singles you've heard, you'd understand what we're talking about.

I don't know, I go back and forth. As for the whole girl/boy thing, my wife turned me on to them, so that's one vote for the girls. Come to think of it, most of the girls I know like them.
Anway, I love that they've brought back the whole rock song thing into people's mind. I hate that that means we hear garage rock songs for nike commercials. I love the whole fucking with the press about the brother/sister thing. I hate how precious the songs come off when they talk about them. I love that they did the Citizen Kane song. I hate that they signed with a major label then freak out that they're getting sued for copyright infringement over the Citizen Kane song.

Bottom line is, that f__ker knows how to write songs.

Mind you, if it comes to cool as crap Detroit bands, I'll go with the Electric Six every time.

Blah. Stop comparing bands already. The Smashing Pumpkins, at their peak were amazing. Jack White does not sound like Billy at all. Their music does not sound like Pumpkins at all.

However...

The White Stripes are a great duo. When I first realised that it was only two people, it was kinda shocked. Jack White can make his guitar sound pretty crazy. I thought for sure there would be a bassist, but he's doing double duty. He's good with a slide, he is making music from a good variety of influences (not mainstream either) and the lyrics are decent. Meg White, although she is not a spectacular drummer, can manage for the type of music that they play (and she's cute... but that's besides the point). If you take them at face value, they aren't anything special.

Seeing them play together live in concert (or on TV, kazaa, etc) is a whole other thing. They have this incredible chemistry and they look like they really get immersed in the music when playing.

With that said, I like them (I've got Elephant and WBC). They are something different, and their music is a nice, refreshing change to what industry is trying to shove down our throats.

They were on the Conan O'Brian show a few weeks ago, every night for a week. I had never heard of them before and I haven't heard anything by them on the radio since. They seemed impressive at the time but I can't, at this moment, remember what any of the songs sounded like. But I do remember that the drummer was pretty cute.

The White Stripes make pretty consistently good songs, and they seem to only be getting better. I haven't heard much before DeStijl, but I'd say Elephant has more songs on it that I can listen to again and again than White Blood Cells did.
