Under the Covers
I was watching a video and thought that when I first heard that particular song, it was actually a cover. I ended up liking the cover better than the original. Now I am appreciating the original too. In a way, the cover educated me and set it up so that I now like them both.
What covers do you like? And if possible throw a comparison of the original/cover up here for us to see. I'm sure that Zeppelin and Hip Hop will provide a trove of examples! I'll start: This is the tune that I got to like from the Top 40 back in high school days (sorry you young'uns... Bieber this is not) The Stampeders: It was written by Percy Mayfield and was a hit for Ray Charles in the '60's

I heard this on the drive into work the other morning, just about drove off the road when the DJ announced who was covering Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus: Johnny Cash! I'd never heard this cover before, and when I got to work, had to sit in my car in the parking lot for a couple of minutes waiting for the song to finish!

I knew this version:
but hadn't realized who'd done it first.

Couldn't find this one on video at Youtube, but I found a streaming site that would play the cover version
Original: Gordon (Three-Chord Gord) Lightfoot "Sundown" and the cover, Luke Doucet: http://hypem.com/#!/item/157e5/Luke+Doucet+-+Sundown

You're right about the Across the Universe. Feels almost Clockwork Orange like. wonder what was in her mind? I myself have always preferred this Beatles Version:
