what was the first piece of music you owned?

thought this would be a good question.

what was the first ever album/ single you can remember buying.

for me, the earliest music i remember owning was an old vynol record of the song " do it to me 1 more time" by the captain and to neel. the first album i bought on cd i think was aqua... yes it was, because i remember dancing around to barbie girl.

:)

embarrassing

It should be "piece," not "peace" in your title. For future reference.

"Survival of the Sickest" by Saliva was the first album I bought. Had a couple good tracks, but most weren't too hot. I'm young, that's why it's a fairly new album for my first.

Martian 09-18-2010 03:16 PM

Saliva? You must be young.

I'm not 100% sure which one I owned first, but the first music cassette tape I owned was either Thriller or Bad, by Michael Jackson. This predates CD's, and we didn't have a turntable growing up.

SSJTWIZTA 09-18-2010 08:36 PM

first one i bought was "so long and thanks for all the shoes."

Baraka_Guru 09-18-2010 08:51 PM

The first album I bought with my own cash was a compilation on cassette tape that went a lil' sumpin' like this:
Rap Traxx (1988)

I bought it for the tracks "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc and "Fight for Your Right" by the Beastie Boys, but what I got was a pure goldmine of late '80s rap.

However, the first album I technically owned was the Cabbage Patch Kids' Cabbage Patch Dreams (1983) on LP.

The theme is timeless:

But the legend lives in good ol' Otis Lee:

michael jackson is awsome.

:)

there should be a thread dedicated to michael.
:)

i have all his cds.. every song ever made. on his own, with the jackson 5, the one he did for charety, everything.

i could go on about how good he is, and how i got in to him, but i'll save that for a michael jackson thread

Redlemon 09-19-2010 05:48 AM

The first LP I was given was the Queen soundtrack to "Flash Gordon".

The first cassette I purchased for myself was Madness (untitled, but had House of Fun).

My first CD was The Bobs, "Songs for Tomorrow Morning". I didn't have a CD player yet, but the CD had 4 bonus tracks, so I bought it and taped it at a friend's place.

I didn't have to buy those on my own--Mom bought them for herself and we just got to listen to them  But Thriller is the first LP I remember wanting to listen to over and over again.

The first album I probably bought on my own and owned was Electric Youth by Debbie Gibson. First CD I bought on my own was janet by Janet Jackson.

Cynthetiq 09-19-2010 02:52 PM

first one?

I know I had , but I don't think I bought it. Same with
I know that the first album I requested to buy with my parents was
First CD? I don't know, I was buying them before I even had a CD player, knowing it was going to be a future format. I'd record them at friend's houses onto tape to play on my walkman.

Punk.of.Ages 09-19-2010 02:55 PM

The first album I bought with my own money (I'm pretty sure) was Paul's Boutique by The Beastie Boys. I had plenty of album's before that because I got a tape player when I was very young and my mom would set me up with all kinds of 80's hair metal to listen to on it.

I'm thinking that my very first album given to me was either Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue or Kill 'Em All by Metallica. I'd have to remember if the first cassette given to me was from my dad or from my mom.

Cassette - some forgettable pop compilation album
Record - Iron Maiden - Killers
CD - Metallica - Black Album (before I even owned a CD player)

MSD 09-21-2010 06:25 PM

The first album I got was Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise on cassette. On CD, I think it was Classic Queen. The first I ever downloaded (illegally) was Korn's Follow the Leader.

I still listen to Gangsta's Paradise in the car sometimes.

Charlatan 09-21-2010 08:58 PM

I think the first one I was given:

45 - Chuck Berry - My Ding a Ling
LP - Elton John's Greatest Hits (though it might have been Snoopy's Christmas Album... memory is fuzzy).

The first one I bought with my own money:

Genesis - Abacab (though I could be remembering this wrong)

my ding a ling. wow... when i first heard that track, i didon't know who it was. when i looked it up and saw it was chuck berry, i was pretty stunned to say the least!. it was really not his style, but i really loved that.

:)

i've heard that song both live and studio recording. i love the live one.. he gets the whole crowd singing along with him.

as for elton, my best song by him is " circle of life". maybe because it's from the lion king (1 of my all time fave movies) but i just enjoy the message.

Shauk 09-22-2010 12:41 AM

Eye of the Tiger, on Vinyl.

I come from a musical pedigree you cannot even fathom. buhahahaha.

seamaiden 09-22-2010 01:26 AM

Cat Stevens "Tea For The Tillerman" LP...probably in 1974.

Wes Mantooth 09-22-2010 10:21 AM

I think the first album I ever bought with my own money was Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction, lawn mowing money...it had just come out and I think it still had the original cover on it. My Mom completely lost her shit when I put it on the turn table later that afternoon, that's how we judged if an album was good or not.

StanT 09-22-2010 11:09 AM

My first two were bought together on vinyl:

LA Woman the Doors
Fragile Yes

Yes, I'm an old fart.

Amaras 09-22-2010 11:18 AM

First one I inheirited (from my 5 years older brother) was Supertramp-Breakfast in
America. Then for my 12th or 13th birthday I got Madonna-Like a Virgin & Michael Jackson's Thriller.
First concert, at about the same time; Iron Maiden, followed quickly by the Jackson 5
tour.
Needless to say, these choices explain some of what I am today.

Wes Mantooth 09-22-2010 11:26 AM

Your first show was an Iron Maiden concert, Amaras? Very nice.

The first concert I ever attended was the day after I got my drivers license, I drove 7 hours south of my tiny little home town with some friends and took in a Pantera/White Zombie concert...I'd have rather gone to see Iron Maiden :D It was a lot of fun though.

I was too young to know what folks were smoking all around me. You
shoulda seen the look on the face of my friend's stepdad though, it was epic!!

Wes Mantooth 09-22-2010 12:35 PM

Naw by the time I was 16 I was one of the people doing the smoking.

Man that show must have been a pill though. I saw Iron Maiden a few years for the first time...but they're old now...its just not the same

roachboy 09-22-2010 12:35 PM

first vinyl. the rolling stones, out of our heads. and another strange thing that featured some guy playing beatles songs on a hammond organ. the cover had the lyrics and i think chord sequences so that you could pretend you were them.

only 8-track: deep purple, purple passages.

first cassette: no idea.

no idea what the first record i bought myself was. i think jefferson airplane's after bathing at baxters, but that's almost definitely wrong.

first cd: i had a really good cassette playback system so didn't switch over until pretty late in the game. the first i remember is planet v, a drum-and-bass comp.

edit: first 45...sam the sham and the pharoahs, wooly bully. (i might have stolen this from my mother. not sure.)

Leto 09-22-2010 12:41 PM

First vinyl album that I purchased? Queen's A Night at the Opera
my first 45 (single) was Brother Louie by the Stories
my first cassette: George Carlin's Toledo Window Box
my first 8-track: K-Tel's Boney M's Greatest Hits....
my first CD: The Cult.

It was the Eddie is dead tour!:dead:
My workday is over, ciao for now!:suave:

lostgirl 09-22-2010 05:40 PM

My sister made me copies of her tapes, and mixed tapes for me when I was little.

The first tape I ever bought was Nine Inch Nails 'Pretty Hate Machine', I think.

Wes Mantooth 09-22-2010 06:15 PM

Thats how I got by too lostgirl, well that and stealing all my brothers kick ass music when he was gone....he had a great collection too, now his taste in music is garbage...how does that happen

boink 10-08-2010 07:44 PM

err...might have been Frampton comes alive or Heart's first album, vinyl that is,
very soon after that I rejected bolth of these for Zepplin.

fatboss 10-09-2010 12:05 PM

First vinyl LP - Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells. (awesome - still is.)

First CD - Phil Collins, Face Value. (In the air tonight - spine tingly!)

Best memory? Walking to my girlfriends house with my copy of Adam and The Ants, Kings of the Wild Frontier tucked under my arm, what a show-off!

Good times! :D

Merry poppins soundtrack

LOL

telekinetic 10-14-2010 08:58 AM

The first cassette I bought was probably Garth Brooks "The Chase".
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA300_.jpg

The first CD I owned was Hope, a Hugh Masekela album with Grazing in the Grass and Bring Him Back Home on it.

http://www.vinylparadise.com/goodlp/7/2hughmg1.jpg
The first CD I ever BOUGHT was Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
http://imgur.com/Brsn6l.jpg

I've only bought a handful of physical CD's since then, probably less than six: Audioslave's self titled release, Beatles White Album, Beastie Boys "The Mix Up", and Fergilicious and FutureSex/LoveSounds for a road trip--everything else has been digital.

ZombieSquirrel 10-18-2010 04:02 PM

I got a Barbie one year for Christmas. It was Rocker Barbie or something...she was in a band and I remember her having some awesome hair and clothes probably too sexy for a young girl to be seeing. She came with a tape. I remember listening to the tape in the car while on a family road trip. My brothers HATED it, but I was a daddy's girl and he learned the lyrics to sing along with me.

I think the first tape that I got that didn't come with a doll was New Kids on the Block. My first CD was Alanis Morissette.

kutulu 10-19-2010 11:12 AM

I'm not exactly sure. The first thing I can remember purchasing was GnR's "Appetite for Destruction" on cassette while my family was on vacation in a mountain town. I walked to the book store and bought it. However, I did have walkman so I must have had something else to listen to.

lunxpress 11-11-2010 02:59 PM

The first album I owned was The Wizard of Oz sountrack. My parents bought it for me when my new baby sister came home from the hospital, correctly forcasting the jealous rage about to ensue.

I furiously scribbled all over the jacket. Still have it, scribbles and all.

First bought for myself: Rolling Stones, Hot Rocks.

LaLa1 11-11-2010 03:29 PM

First album I remember having, I think I got it from my aunt was The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers. I was fascinated with the zipper and just had to have it!

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MgRHpnroYG...l_cd-front.jpg

First piece of music I bought myself was the eight track of The Bay City Rollers.

Nepenthes 11-11-2010 05:12 PM

I bought of bunch of cassette tapes from Columbia Records for $.01 with the agreement to buy ten more at regular price over the following two years.

Ozzy Osborne, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and others.

It is nice to see that other people here were/are into metal.
