best/ worst concert?
 

hey all.

so what's been your best and worst band/ solo artist you've seen in concert and why.

my best concert has to be linken park, because i think they are just amazing!.

my worst concert has to be rehanna. when i went to se her, most of the time i saw her support act. when it was finally time to come out she through a tantrum backstage and refused to come out because she said her support act was better.

when she finally did most of the crowd had left and she did about 3 or 4 tracks anyway.

what a waste of money in my opinion

I've never been to a concert. I'm a loser.

Even though everyone else in the world thinks they're lame, Def Leppard puts on a damn good show. I've seen them five times and thoroughly enjoyed myself each time.

My best concert, though, would probably be the Eagles. I saw them on my 14th birthday, and they were my absolute favorite band in the world (still are, I'll be honest.) No opening act, and except for a short intermission, they played for about four hours straight. I was in heaven.

I actually can't think of a bad concert I've been to... I'll have to think about it a little more. Off the top of my head, I'll say Brian Setzer...he was absolutely amazing, but the venue kinda sucked. No room for dancing!

worst would have to be circle jerks. keith morris just ranted on and on and on about fucking bullshit. must have went on for 45 min. about his own personal views instead of playing music. i payed for a concert, not church.

Best solo concert was NIN in Albany NY in 1994. The stage show and the light show were just crazy as well as the audience. This was an indoor concert with reserved seating and with floor seating higher priced. As soon as NIN went on stage, people from the cheap seats stormed the barriers to the floor and turned the floor space into a huge mosh pit. The only negative was that people were waiting for an encore for about 10 minutes when finally the house lights went on and there was an announcement that the concert was over because somebody in the audience threw a show and hit the drummer in the head causing a concussion.

Worst solo concert was a double bill with Lynyrd Skynrd and Hank Williams Jr. The music was mediocre, and between songs the screen behind the band lit up with the band's name, I guess so you wouldn't forget who was playing.

Worst solo that was my own fault was Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions tour. I was so interested in seeing Bruce that I didn't realize this was a folk song tour oriented around Pete Seeger songs. Just not my type of concert. I did see Bruce in concert playing his own songs a couple years later and that was a good concert.

Best overall concerts were the Woodstock '94 and Woodstock '99, just for the insanity of it all. NIN played at Woodstock '94 and basicallly was the show Saturday night. Metallica followed NIN and my attitude was who's Metallica?

Best - Joe Jackson. Played in a small venue with just the trio.Incredible.

Worst - Bob Dylan.Same thing for hours/Van Morrison.Sound was great but he only played his newest material and it was unfortunately not from his best period.

Best - INXS
I liked their music but wasn't a fan. Went to see the opening band, a very popular (at the time) local group called The Del Fuegos. They got to play an extended set, a good 60-90 minutes, before INXS came out. The Del Fuegos got the crowd pretty amped up but INXS managed to keep the crowd going for another 90 or so minutes.
Classic case of going in with low expectations and being pleasantly surprised.

Worsrt - The Cars
I think the band was replaced by an early version of Disney's animatronic robots. No life at all on stage.

Indoor: 2006, Eric Johnson, no contest. We were standing at his feet when he played Cliffs of Dover and May This Be Love/Waterfall
Outdoor: 1994, Tampa Fairgrounds... Suicidal Tendencies, Fight, Candlebox and Metallica. Period.

Honorable mentions to Seven Nations six of the eight times I've seen them and to Smashing Pumpkins at the Ice Palace in Tampa in 1996. Freaking awesome, but can't beat Cliffs of Dover.

Worst

Indoor: G. Love and Special Sauce, 2010... never thought I'd say that. We actually walked out because the sound was so fucked up and so was he.

Outdoor: Hmmm... can't think of one I've actually left.

Looking back, the first concert I ever went to was probably the worst--Bush with Veruca Salt back in the mid 1990s.

I've been to three concerts that really stick with me. One is the Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw double bill I went to with some girlfriends from high school once we were all in college. It was at the Rose Garden in Portland, which is a terrible place to see a concert if the act in question doesn't know how to connect with the audience (see worst concert, above). Even if you don't care for country music, Tim McGraw puts on an amazing show. We had seats at the back of the arena, and during the intro of his band, the Dancehall Doctors, we were waiting impatiently to spot Tim coming on to the stage. Suddenly, the lights went down except for a spotlight on an area a couple rows from where we were, and Tim appeared out of a giant equipment case on a stool as the band launched into Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." Seeing him perform that song so close to us was truly cool.

I've also been to a couple of outdoor shows that were great: Pink Martini at the Oregon Zoo (awesome band, amazing venue, fun times, and a quintessential Oregon experience, in my mind) and Floater at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene. For the latter show we had a great big group of people (mostly old college buddies) and were able to commandeer a large plot of grass for our party with a great view of the stage. Not only was Floater great (they usually are), but they had a really interesting opening act, That 1 Guy:

My favourite was Alice Cooper/Rob Zombie with the Gruesome Twosome tour... just two great shows back to back.

Worst was def leppard, Styx opened for them and killed it, had such energy going into the show and then Def Leppard just had nothing to offer.

Best was Stompin' Tom Connors who is a Canadian folk legend. It was at the old Ontario Place Forum which no longer exists. It was outdoors with a round stage that slowly rotated to face all the surrounding bleachers. I don't know what else to say other than the crowd spirit and energy was fantastic!

The worst was one I was actually working on. I was running followspot and it was a tribute band double bill of the BeeGees and Abba. Two of the BeeGee guys were also the Abba guys. Lame, lame, lame.

Iggy Pop in the late 70's when the drum kit caught fire but he still came out with a salad bowl on his head and did another encore set ?

the Dwarvs when Blag Dalia was wearing black pantyhose and no underwear and somehow a hole got ripped in the crotch and his junk was flailing around..ick ! heh but it was good mayhem

Gwar, when the front 30 feet of the audience was covered in fake blood, piss and cum ?

I'm too old to remember the bad shows. but the Mudhoney show when I lost a bran new pair of $500 Oliver Peoples prescription glasses in the pit. that sucked. never should have seen Mudhoney in anything bigger than a bar.

I loved Depeche MOde because they were pure awesome. That's about all I can say. AC/DC was good too.

In the last year I've seen Jonathan Coulton twice, once on his own with Paul and Storm opening, and once when HE was opening for They Might Be Giants. It's hard to say which order, but they are probably #1 and #2 on my list of bests. That guy's amazing. TMBG were INCREDIBLE, and I liked Paul and Storm far more than I expected to. #3 was Santana--his rhythm section was fucking spectacular.

I can't really think of a BAD concert I've been to. Even when I wasn't so into the music I found something to entertain myself. I once laughed at how drunk Steven Stills was. The summer ('91) when Pink Floyd was touring and I was too broke to go was pretty brutal. I sat in my crap apartment and moped the evening they were playing about 40 minutes from me.

it's hard to pick "a best" show. fela anikulapo kuti & egypt 80 were pretty great. but so was the art ensemble of chicago, massive attack, einsturzende neubauten, cornelius, the p-funk all stars, sun ra, pharoah sanders, hamza el-din, acid mothers' temple, freestyle fellowship, gang starr, pharcyde, sarah vaughn, dexter gordon, steve lacy, roni size, solex, ornette coleman, and a whole pile of others (i'm remembering more of them as i sit here).....this not to mention great performances by other folk who you've likely not heard of because they are, for reasons that cannot possibly have anything to do with musicianship, in the "underground" (because they're fantastic players).

most of the "bad" shows i've seen were bad because the sound sucked.
the de la soul's tour for "3 feet high and rising" because they hadn't quite figured out how to do the live performance thing in a hip-hop context. every other time i saw them they were great. and i liked the show for what it was.
public enemy because the sound blew and chuck d was sick.
there are a bunch of shows i didn't like that i ended up going to knowing i wouldn't like them because i didn't like that kind of music.


i really really hated dire straits.

The best is hard for me to say, I've been to some pretty awesome shows. Rush at the Forum in L.A. was awesome. Guns and Roses at the Celebrity Theater before Appetite for Destruction was released was a great show (3 of us paid a guard at the side door 5 bucks to let us in). Joe Cocker and the Steve Miller Band in Medford, OR was an amazing show.

The worst w/o a doubt was Faith No More. They opened for Metallica on the "And Justice For All" tour when they played at Irvine Meadows and got boo'd off the stage.

I've seen one hell of a lot of concerts. The blues wasn't all that popular in the early 70's, major artists used to play the suburbs on weekdays. I saw Muddy Waters, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and others in sleazy suburban bars that had very liberal carding policy (got money? we'll serve you). For major concerts, any of 3 Pink Floyd shows would be best.


I usually walk out of bad shows. The worst was probably Uriah Heep backed up by Earth, Wind, and Fire. 70's black power and heavy metal (for the time) was not a good mix. Knife fight about 20 seats over when the stoners booed the backup band. Uriah Heep were more loaded than I was (which was an accomplishment at the time).

Best: Muse. I've seen them twice now (saw them just last night). Both shows were the greatest shows I've ever seen. Last night they were using this weird pillar setup. They each had their own pillar and started off about 10-15 feet above the stage on them. Above them was the rest of their pillars and it did a light show/movie (for some songs) kind of dealy. It was pretty cool. And, of course the music was great.

Worst: I've not actually been to a bad concert yet. *knock on wood*

Best- Queen, 1981 Portland. Freddie was a hell of an entertainer. Runner up- The Boss (Springsteen) LA 1985. Bruce puts on a hell of a show.

Worse- Judas Priest 1979. They came out and had everyone's attention when the lead singer rode a Harley onto the stage. They lost the masses when they started to play. Pretty sad when a bunch of your own screaming fans end up booing you off the stage.

I only retain the good experiences:

Pete Townshend w/o the Who, Beacon Theatre, NYC. Security had to escort me back to my seat, multiple times. I just wanted to tell him I loved him, geez!

Grateful Dead/ Bob Dylan, RFK Stadium.

um. Metallica. yes. anyplace. everytime.

BEST: there have been many great concerts but I'd have to say, The Flaming Lips concert I was at last night was one of the best. Not only because the band was great and the stage show awesomely weird but because the venue was so small.

WORST: I am going to give a second vote for the The Cars. Most. Boring. Concert. EVER.

First: Billy Preston (Yay) opening for Uriah Heep 1973? Madison WI

Scariest: The Misfits-1982 Elite Club S.F. A guitar split a fan's head open & a riot ensued.

Fondest: Taj Mahal @ The Big Top Chautauqua-WI 1992-3?

Best sound, lighting & choreography: DEVO -1980 San Diego

Best concert while under the influence of shrooms: Public Image Limited - S.F. '83-4?

great concerts were violent femmes free at point state park
all the punk shows i saw either in houses or venues. one that sticks out is choking victim, then when they were leftover crack.

and the mighty mighty bosstones way back 1994-1996. they stayed playing pittsburgh like 2 or 3 times a year.
been to a lot of concerts (could go on and on) but the worst was
melvins/l7 in mid 90s. awesome show, but my friend got slight alcohol poisoning and was throwing up so we had to leave halfway through l7's set.

next great concert? cradle of filth, and immortal 2 days later!

i saw iggy pop for free back in 1999, and he was as good as he was when he was with the stooges. that guy is intense!

Worst concert? LFO. I was at some festival thing in either Stockton or Sacramento, I can't remember which, back in the late 90s, and that boy band LFO was performing. Jesus Christ, it was the worst thing that's ever happened in the history of our solar system.It was bad enough that LFO was the worst of the cookie-cutter boy bands of the 90s, with manufactured pop and nonsensical lyrics, but the waves of unabashed lust coming from the audience just served to remind me that there are terrible ways to cheat the system of human appreciation. Some people will earn the respect, love, and even lust of others through honest self-improvement, contributing to the world in some way, honesty, and a self-assuredness that comes from these things. Other people will be marketed like a bag of Doritos, to be consumed en masse despite having no real value or contribution.

Best concert? A local band called Brea from Morgan Hill played this bar and they blew the roof off. They had quality, original music, superb showmanship and were able to connect to everyone in the entire place, whether they showed up for the performance or not. I'm not even necessarily a fan of rock and I had an absolute blast.

This is really hard - most memorable was probably the 'Baby Animals' at Paddington RSL club. They had a huge room upstairs for bands - this really rocked.

Honourable mentions for Metallica, Def Leppard and Spy v Spy.

My worst would be Bruce Springsteen - in an outdoor stadium, we had seats a million miles from the stage, high and right of the stage. The power cut off 5 times during the show and when it was working the sound sucked. I worked with a guy who had tickets on the grass right in front of the stage and he said it was brilliant - paying mega bucks for tickets does pay off apparently.

Best concert ever: Rush R30 tour here in Gnashville. It was so much fun and the quality was immense!
Worst concert evar: two really, one was Dave Matthews band, not because of the band, but because of the crowd. what a bunch of sucker-butts. Worst actual band? Name most any christian band anymore; too much copy cat suckage. and i am a pro in christian music. i practically hate the stuff.
