Playlists for Literature

I am in breathless anticipation for JJ Abrams to finish up Lost so he can get started on Stephen King's Dark Tower movies. I've read the entire series several times, and all seven volumes are loaded with music. You just know that Abrams will stay true to Stephen King's vision and include those named songs in the soundtrack to enhance the movie. But what if you knew the soundtrack ahead of time? Wouldn't that make some kickass reading if you could put on The Dark Tower playlist while reading The Dark Tower?

Well, have no fear! I've done it for you! And JJ Abrams is certainly welcome to come to me for advice at any time.

Here is my playlist for The Dark Tower (Volume 1): The Gunslinger

Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
Hey Jude - The Beatles
Man in Black - Johnny Cash
Living in the Past - Jethro Tull
The Eagle and the Hawk - John Denver
Walking Man - James Taylor
Crow - Dan Fogelberg
Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
Ease on Down the Road - Michael Jackson
Will it Go Round in Circles - Billy Preston
From the Beginning - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Space Cowboy - Steve Miller
Fire on the Mountain - Marshall Tucker Band
I Will Follow You into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
Break on through to the Other Side - The Doors

What about you?!?! Create a playlist for one of your favorite novels, featuring songs that are inspired by events in the story.

For The Dark Tower, certain songs are specifically mentioned, like Hey Jude, Oxford Town, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Man of Contant Sorrow, Velcro Fly, etc., so those were easy. And then other songs started popping into my head that matched certain plotlines incredibly well, like Crazy Train, Instant Karma, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, and many others. Before long, I was searching throughout my entire music collection looking for any song that could be twisted into place, such as a song by King Crimson or a song by Jethro Tull, and the playlist became an enormous list of 114 songs.

I will add other playlist volumes to The Dark Tower later so the posts aren't doubles.

I know of two actual book soundtracks.

"House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski : "Haunted" by Poe. (They are also brother and sister)

"Anathem" by Neal Stephenson : "IOLET: Music from the World of Anathem" by David Stutz.
