Thank you for pointing out I completely spaced how awesome RATM's Maggie's Farm is. I'm pretty ashamed.

Sinead O'Conner's KILLER cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U.

Someone once said that Prince wrote the shit outta that song, and Sinead sang the shit out of it.

Reverend Horton Heat covering Motorhead's "Ace of Spades."

Coincidentally, I will be going to see both live shortly, as the former is opening for the latter, and it will be the greatest concert in the history of mankind.

i'm surprised there's no love for A Perfect Circle's Amotion... all anti-war covers. in particular, i'd say Al Green- What's Going On and Zepp's "When the Levee Breaks" are magnificent.

Also, if you like maynard like i do, you should check out his solo project Puscifer.com. He just put up a great cover of a Love & Rockets song he did for a tribute album.

Aaron Neville's cover of "Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight" (The Grand Tour) is better than Bob Dylan's original (Infidels).

To elaborate on my post from above, I have now seen both RHH and Motorhead perform Ace of Spades, and RHH outdid Motorhead. This is not the actual performance, and does it no justice, but I feel the need to post a Youtube vid.

I just realized that Bob Dylan's live cover of Idiot Wind released on (Hard Rain) is actually superior to the studio version released on (Blood on the Tracks).

Which is not to say that the studio version doesn't kick ass.

YouTube - Reverend Horton Heat Covers Motorhead
To be completely clear, that's Reverend Horton Heat with the singer from Nashville Pussy on lead vocals. The Rev is just playing guitar on this one

For some this may sound like sacrilege, but
I am very pleasantly pleased with Across the Universe, yes, the entire soundtrack.
I have a few favourites such as Blackbird and Dear Prudence.

On that theme, I enjoyed Siouxsie and the Banshees version as well. The first song of theirs I ever heard.

I have to agree with the me first and the gimme gimmes - I mostly think their stuff is better more because I like that style music better than the originals

several people said they like them, but here is a sample:

I could actually provide a whole list of covers I like better than the original - I'm a fan of most punk covers (as long as they try and do them right)

great call on smooth criminal by AAF

here is another one I really like: Boys of Summer by The Ataris

Not to try and one up you, but I think Gavin Castleton's version is better. I will never tell someone their opinion is wrong when it comes to music, but this is just mine.

I wouldn't say any of their covers are better than the original, but I think the concept of this band is really fun and I enjoy just about every cover they've done.
I am a big fan! My first encounter was when I was in college hanging out at a coffee shop. I heard Somewhere Over the Rainbow by them, and fell in love! They make me happy!

I hadn't heard the original first, but still like They Might Be Giant's version better.

I can't find a decent video of the TMBG version

I didn't. Don't worry, it goes to an indie duo named Pomplamoose. For some reason, they didn't put their name in the video title. The best part is at 2:02, jump to there if you don't care for the rest.

Pretty much all of the covers that Metallica did over the course of their career, especially the Diamondhead covers are superior to the originals.

For metal fans, Machine Head did an amazing cover of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

Faith No More doing Sabbath's "War Pigs"
