Who loves mashups?
Because I love mashups. I'm sure most people on the internets know about The Grey Album, but in a similar vein there's now Jaydiohead, putting Jay-Z lyrics over Radiohead to surprisingly great effect.
There're other amusing combinations like Destiny's Child x Nirvana to create a little tune they call " " But for my money, the full-length 'albums' people put together is where the real creativity shines, because it's not just a list o' songs but actual attempts to run a range of different tunes and it's a total kick. |

Never have heard of this Grey Album but it does sound interesting.
I have heard of this "White Album" and recognise two track names reading the list on Wikipedia, no clue about anything else on there though. Interesting to read about this Apple Corp. company they started. THe only mashup in my collection is the Christmas song with the combined voices of Sinatra and Nat Cole; very well done and smooth final result. |
Even more than hearing them I like performing them. I was in a band a few years back that did mashups live. We'd do things like "Brazil/Viva Las Vegas" (basic rhythm is similar) or "Come Together/Feel Like Breakin' Up Somebody's Home" (bass-line is simliar). Not that bands doing something like this is anything new.
I still love doing them ... but I'm not in a cover band at the moment. |
yeah---the basic idea of a mashup is as new as be-bop. it was stock in trade to use the progressions from pop songs and replace the melody lines.
i like mash-ups when they do beyond novelty. the grey album is a good example. but i like slightly older stuff more--like john oswald or the tape beatles. more radical in terms of chopping stuff up, not so interested in the rare sides aspect of the game. |

I preferred The Beastles by DJ BC. |
Daft Punk's last album was a compilation of mashups from their older albums. Apparently they started doing it at a show where they had a small amount of time to perform. They wanted their audience to get the full Daft Punk experience, so they mashed everything up.

I'm a huge fan of Q-Unit, a Queen and 50 Cent mashup album. Google around for it, I think the original download site is down, but I'm sure others have stepped up in its place

Good stuff on here! I'm a big mash-up fan, and have heard of all these. I just wanted to throw in that if you like this stuff, you definitely want to check out Girl Talk, as well as some of DJ Z-Trip's older stuff.
I love that you can buy Girl Talk's albums on Amazon. We'll see how long that lasts, since he hasn't licensed a damn thing. |
Smells like bootylicious doesn't do it for me... I specifically was among the few who dissaproved of JayZ vs. Linkin Park. I do however, love techno and there spin cycles, remixes and versus matchings. They totally put me in the zone!!

I think I'm abit late to the party, but I'm a big fan of mash-ups. Loved the jaydiohead album..but I find most things on youtube.
There's a nice series with Nas and Nujabes which is hiphop mixed over jazzy piano: Also got a soft spot for this Gwen Stephani/Britney Spears: |
My friend Matt does Mashups, he's about to release a small sampler of them this week on his myspace. Mixson It Up - Full Length Out February 24th! on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

Honestly, straight mashups are kind of boring. Two songs that go together? EASY!
The new hottness is with artists like Ludachrist that mash together many more tracks and throw their own beats & synths on top of it all... - - - WORSHIP LUDACHRIST <-- download their whole album! |
I am a fan of many things by Bobby Martini.
My favorites include: "Kill Bill In the Air Tonight", Big Time Dare, Take Me Home (Ambient Asian Rain Mix), Four by 4, and Offshore & Lazy. |
When Linkin Park/Jay-z did their "mash ups," MTV ran a program where they mashed up some other songs, and they're not too bad. Beasty Boys/Rage Against the Machine, Britney/Linkin Park, Eminem/Justin Timberlake, Green Day/Our Lady Peace/Oasis. All in all, the songs were amazing!!!

hunt yourself up some Who Boys !
The Who Boys |
Gotta love good mashups, there aren't enough out there.
If you're looking for good full album work, I really can't recommend American Edit enough. I think it's significantly better than American Idiot, and it goes over well even with my friends who don't like greenday. DJ Mike Czech of Skratch 'N Sniff is great, both in quantity and quality. This is my favorite, at least for today. |
I'm a big fan of Jaydiohead. Their album is free here:
