Disaster Songs

What are the greatest all-time disaster songs? You know, songs like Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Teen Angel, New York City Mining Disaster. I'm thinking of compiling a cd of "Head in the Oven Music" and your input would be appreciated...

ratbastid 06-28-2003 08:06 AM

Don't forget "Leader of the Pack".

Vrooom Vroooooom......

Nautical Disaster - Tragically Hip
Last Kiss - The Pearl Jam cover or the Frank Wilson original

hotzot 06-30-2003 10:39 PM

Smoke on the water!!

Eggy 07-01-2003 12:48 AM

Definately "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam.
"Elevator" by Boxcar Racer is about a suicide jumper, and someone who watched it happen from the street, I don't know if that really counts.

frankx 07-15-2003 05:28 AM

Sylvestre Matuschka by Lard - about the crazy guy who used to get off by dynamiting train bridges and listening to the crashes.

Scratch 07-15-2003 07:50 AM

Jim Carroll - People who died
Boomtown Rats - I dont like Mondays

Troublebot 07-15-2003 08:22 AM

Avondale Mine Disaster, by any number of people. sk

That Pearl Jam cover of "Last Kiss" is wretched. Awful. Inexcusably bad. Put the original on there.

crow_daw 07-15-2003 11:23 AM

Undying Love by Nas is pretty fucked up.

You sir, are wrong.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night covered by Nirvana would probably be a good one to put on the album as well. Or you could put the original song In The Pines by Ralph Stanley on there.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Donkeypuncher 07-15-2003 12:20 PM

wow - fun topic! My first thoughts were "Edmund Fitzgerald" and "I Don't Like Mondays" but I'm hitting a wall after those...

hmmm...

Tool's "Aenema" could work... as an impending disaster

"Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still."

learn to swim!

MikeyChalupa 07-17-2003 04:48 AM

Pink Floyd (by that point, Roger Waters, really) Two Suns in the Sunset. About a guy who is in his car on the way home from work, and his city gets nuked.

No, I am right. Eddie Vedder couldn't sound worse if he was being choked with a dying cat.

CSflim 07-17-2003 12:10 PM

Disaster songs eh?

Anything by Godspeed You Black Emperor. How about...Dead Flag Blues? or maybe Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls.

Unknown Poster 07-17-2003 01:02 PM

"Sullivan" - Caroline's Spine

what about the original?
then again, the original conveys almost no emotion and without the lyrics would sound downright peppy...
but ah well.

and "american pie" by don mclean.

Last kiss wasn't originated by Pearl Jam, so I don't think they should get the credit. It was originated by a chick band in the sixties and I wish I could tell you their name. Someone out there HELP! But that's ok, alot of people think that Metallica originated "Whiskey in the Jar" It was actually done by Thin Lizzy in the 70's.

OMFUG 07-21-2003 08:42 AM

Fire and Rain is always good.... also, High Speed Dirt by Megadeth and ... shit, I was thinking of a great one, and I lost it.

KWSN 07-21-2003 08:45 AM

This one is so fucking easy.

Thom Parrott - The Aberfan Coal Tip Tragedy

Find a copy. Listen to it. There's no way in hell to disagree. It's one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written, if not THE most.

Dr.Who 07-21-2003 02:47 PM

I might sound silly but "Spanish Train" by Chris DeBurgh is one of my favorite, just for the word and the idea of having the world lost over a check game.

LivingDead 07-22-2003 09:44 PM

Live - Overcome (from 9/11)
Pearl Jam - Jeremy
Bob Dylan - You belong to me
Wycliff - Gone till november

monger1950 07-22-2003 10:19 PM

Nena - 99 luft balloons
Harry Chapin - 30,000 lbs. of bananas

thumper 07-23-2003 01:18 PM

Kinda depends on your genre of music. Lot's of country disaster songs exist.

Wreck of the Old 97 - Vernon Dalhart, 1924 (1st country song to sell a million records!)
Town Of The Living Dead - Ron Sowell

hmm what about that "Tell Laura I Love Her" song. Depressing.

SecretMethod70 11-09-2003 05:04 PM

put my vote in for Fire and Rain and American Pie.

Indeed it is.

drown_with_me 11-10-2003 02:20 PM

How about "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean? That song always gave me the creeps as a child. The spooky background singers going <i>"Big John... Big John...."</i>

Tirian 11-12-2003 11:37 AM

Ode to Billie Joe - Bobbie Gentry

"Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

h2ogo69 11-13-2003 11:48 AM

Black sabbth - war pigs

killswitch engage - when darkness falls

slayer - seasons in the abyss

tool - aenima
