Disaster Songs
What are the greatest all-time disaster songs? You know, songs like Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Teen Angel, New York City Mining Disaster. I'm thinking of compiling a cd of "Head in the Oven Music" and your input would be appreciated...

Don't forget "Leader of the Pack".
Vrooom Vroooooom...... |
Nautical Disaster - Tragically Hip
Last Kiss - The Pearl Jam cover or the Frank Wilson original |
Smoke on the water!!
|
Definately "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam.
"Elevator" by Boxcar Racer is about a suicide jumper, and someone who watched it happen from the street, I don't know if that really counts. |
Sylvestre Matuschka by Lard - about the crazy guy who used to get off by dynamiting train bridges and listening to the crashes.
|
Jim Carroll - People who died
Boomtown Rats - I dont like Mondays |
The Ledge- by The Replacements
|
yaphet kotto - the killer was in the government blankets
|
Avondale Mine Disaster, by any number of people. sk
|
That Pearl Jam cover of "Last Kiss" is wretched. Awful. Inexcusably bad. Put the original on there.
|
Undying Love by Nas is pretty fucked up.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night covered by Nirvana would probably be a good one to put on the album as well. Or you could put the original song In The Pines by Ralph Stanley on there. |
Sunday Bloody Sunday
|
wow - fun topic! My first thoughts were "Edmund Fitzgerald" and "I Don't Like Mondays" but I'm hitting a wall after those...
hmmm... Tool's "Aenema" could work... as an impending disaster "Some say a comet will fall from the sky. Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves. Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still." learn to swim! |
Pink Floyd (by that point, Roger Waters, really) Two Suns in the Sunset. About a guy who is in his car on the way home from work, and his city gets nuked.

No, I am right. Eddie Vedder couldn't sound worse if he was being choked with a dying cat. |
Disaster songs eh?
Anything by Godspeed You Black Emperor. How about...Dead Flag Blues? or maybe Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls. |
"Sullivan" - Caroline's Spine

then again, the original conveys almost no emotion and without the lyrics would sound downright peppy... but ah well. and "american pie" by don mclean. |

Fire and Rain is always good.... also, High Speed Dirt by Megadeth and ... shit, I was thinking of a great one, and I lost it.
|
This one is so fucking easy.
Thom Parrott - The Aberfan Coal Tip Tragedy Find a copy. Listen to it. There's no way in hell to disagree. It's one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written, if not THE most. |
I might sound silly but "Spanish Train" by Chris DeBurgh is one of my favorite, just for the word and the idea of having the world lost over a check game.
|
Live - Overcome (from 9/11)
Pearl Jam - Jeremy Bob Dylan - You belong to me Wycliff - Gone till november |
Nena - 99 luft balloons
Harry Chapin - 30,000 lbs. of bananas |
Kinda depends on your genre of music. Lot's of country disaster songs exist.
Wreck of the Old 97 - Vernon Dalhart, 1924 (1st country song to sell a million records!) Town Of The Living Dead - Ron Sowell hmm what about that "Tell Laura I Love Her" song. Depressing. |
put my vote in for Fire and Rain and American Pie.

How about "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean? That song always gave me the creeps as a child. The spooky background singers going <i>"Big John... Big John...."</i>
|
Ode to Billie Joe - Bobbie Gentry
"Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge." |
Black sabbth - war pigs
killswitch engage - when darkness falls slayer - seasons in the abyss tool - aenima |
