Esperanza Spalding
Did anyone catch her performance on Letterman on June 4th? I never listened to Jazz, never really cared for it, but this girl has opened my eyes. Her style is amazing, and I think its safe to say I'm going to buying her album very soon.
Here is her performance from that show. Anyone else like her as much as I do?

I embedded the video for you.
I heard an interview with her on NPR about a month ago. I tend to prefer male singers in vocal jazz, but she's certainly talented and enjoyable.

I saw her quartet tonight. It was bass, drums, piano, and Esperanza on acoustic bass and electric fretless bass. They did original music as well as tweaked some standards like Nina Simone, and a beautiful Body and Soul (the best Ive probably ever heard). This woman, I think she's in her 20s, is the most fabulous new jazz musician Ive heard in a long time. it is exciting. Her voice is fluent and strong and right on the money. This is a woman whose career is set in stone. I think she is going to be known as one of our most jazz artists ever. I think she already is.
