Rockabilly - Suggestions?

I've been listening to a lot of rockabilly lately, but I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with a lot of the groups who are still playing it. I've heard the Stray Cats (of course), The Go-Getters, The Flat Duo Jets...and that's about it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to other modern rockabilly bands I could check out?

And, I'm really not interested in psychobilly - Cramps, Rev. Horton Heat, etc. - I'm looking for the purer stuff.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, everyone.

Silent Jay, I don't think that's rockabilly, but I like it nonetheless. He's sure got a gutter mouth on him, eh? Not that there's a motherfucking thing wrong with that.

Is he really Hank Williams III?

Pig. Yes, I am.

You're right, jewels, The Traveling Wilburys have done some rockabilly, but I already have all their music. I was hoping to learn about groups making modern day, but traditional-style rockabilly. Guess there's just not that many people into it these days.

Thanks again, everyone!

I didn't realize that the term has increased it's old-school span, so I just found an Amazon list that may (or may not ) help you out. It might be what you're looking for since I've never heard of these bands. I'd be curious to hear which ones you enjoy most; maybe I'll give some a try.

I can't get to Youtube at work, so you'll have to do your own legwork, but:

The Reverend Horton Heat

Jonathon Richman from the "Jonathon Goes Country" album

Mike Ness's (of Social Distortion fame) solo albums

Lee Presson and the Nails (although that may be more off color swing band than rockabilly)

Early Johnny Cash or Carl Perkins

Todd Steed and the Sons of Sphere

My tastes run to more modern rockabilly, but these are all ones that are in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Yep, Old Hank is his grand daddy, and Jr. is his daddy. Yeah he's got a potty mouth that's for sure, an older album, Lovesick, Broke and Driftin doesn't have as much cussing.

Hank III has a very wide musical range. He was in a metal band with Phil Anselmo from Down called Superjoint Ritual, great band. Then he has Assjack, which he plays with currently. I've heard his concerts consist of 3 sets, a country set, a Rockabilly\Hellbilly set, then an Assjack set which is a little more metal.

When he wants to he can pull off sounding identical to his grandfather, even looks like him, he's a brilliant artist.

I listen to the Cats or Brian regularly.

Also I think a lot of older Tom Petty, esp from his Mud Crutch days is Rockabilly.

Reverend Horton Heat's "Spend a Night in the Box" album is not psychobilly. it's more of an old school rockabilly/swing album. try that one

True, but it's not their best work. I prefer "Liquor in Front" or "Its Martini Time". "Rock the Joint" and "Cowboy Love" are my two ATF's.

Yay, suggestions!

Charles, I will check out this Handsome Ned.

Thanks, Jazz. I'm not a big fan of Rev. Horton Heat, but I will check out Derwood's suggestion (thanks, Derwood!). I already have a lot of Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins...as well as Gene Vincent, Johnny Burnette, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Elviz...I will check out your other suggestions as I have not heard of them.

rb, awesome...I like very, very much

vanblah, your friend is awesome...I love that classic country & western stuff

ChassisWelder, I've never heard of them, but if they're not straight ahead rockabilly then maybe not...although, I really shouldn't be limiting myself. X is one of my all-time favorite bands and a lot of their music could probably be categorized as 'psychobilly.' So, I will check them out, thanks!

Tully, I never even knew Tom Petty had Mud Crutch days this I must look into, as well.

Thanks everyone for your assistance in furthering my current music obsession.
