Not that I consider Van Halen style tapping crap at all (particularly once you get to Greg Howe levels of mastery), but if you are into the more polyphonic two-handed tapping thing, there are a few players worth checking out:
  • Adam Fulara

  • Greg Howard (Chapman Stick)

  • Jean Baudin (bass)

Adam Fulara has the worst case of guitar face I've ever seen.

I have been very impressed with the Chapman Stick since I first saw Tony Levin play one.

Chapman sticks are nice, but I'm much more impressed by guys like Andy McKee. Getting tapped notes to sound cleanly on an acoustic is no mean feat, and to compose pieces like that...well, yeah. Without mincing words, it's pretty fuckin' cool.

I'm mostly content to play my guitar the normal way, though. That gives me enough to explore for now.

Also, what's with people posting youtube videos of Super Mario/Metroid/Zelda music? That gimmick was old when it started.

EDIT - Also, don't knock the Van Halen-style double handed arpeggio tapping. That shit is a lot harder than it looks.

For the record, Drifting is the name of the song played by Andy McKee. The technique is known as tapping (or more specifically, two-handed tapping; an example of one-handed tapping can be seen in AC/DC's Thunderstruck video performed by Angus Young, although it's not nearly as difficult to get right).

Only reason I posted the Zelda / Mario music was to illustrate two-handed tapping on bass.

Chapman stick is a serious mindjob to get your head around. I've tried it a couple times and never got anywhere with it. I can just about play a couple Bach preludes and things on electric guitar with two-handed tapping, but I wouldn't call myself proficient.

Another acoustic tapper to check out is Justin King.

oh sorry.

the first time i heard the word drifiting used, it was used to describe this whole style of pickless play. both hands rocking the taps you know. so thats whay i started refering to it as such.

I can get into plenty of trouble jest frettin' and pluckin, thanks.

Chapman Stick= insane. The Darktown Saints have a stick player... carries both the bass and guitar lines very nicely.
There's a Stick festival in Ann Arbor, MI at Oz Music every year. Son Tim got a free lesson from Greg Howard. Nice guy!
