Music Trivia:
Ok, let's get the old music trivia thread going again.
If you are a newbie, the rules are pretty simple: Answer the question correctly, you get to ask the next question. Wait for the asker to confirm that you are correct. A question is deemed a stumper if it is not answered correctly in a 24 hour period. At that time, the original asker gives the answer and comes up with another trivia question. Simple, eh? I'll ask the first one: In light of the recent mistrial of Phil Spector, What artist did a song that quotes Phils ex wife Ronnie and she actually sings the quote in the song? Should be pretty easy! |
shit, i didn't know that's what it was about...i'm not giving the answer, because i have no appropriate trivia question, but i would like to say that i hate that guy, that song, and his crappy little slurring accent. nothing personal.
|
i know the song title but not the "artist"---are there rules about looking stuff up?
|
I think it's Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money. I'll wait for confirmation.
|
Anxst, you are correct. your turn.
Roachboy, sorry, I forgot the rule about not looking it up. thanks for your honesty. Obviously we will get googlers, but everyone is on their honor. |
on their honour? where do you think you are?
|
I'm in the TFP where everyone is honorable!

Sweet, I got it right. Btw, googlers will be shot on sight! NEW QUESTION: This surf rock band, famous for stunts such as playing entirely in 1950's cosmonaut gear and wearing flaming TVs on their heads recently reunited for a single show at the Touch and Go records 25th anniversary concert. (They put on one hell of a show, btw.) Who are they? |
As before, I'll help moderate. If that's alright with perripken.
This thread was a blast the last time and I kind of missed it. |
Quote:
Waiting for confirmation. |

Bingo! I was a huge fan of theirs during the 90's. Between them, Big Black, and Killdozer, I wanted to be on that record label so bad when I first formed a band. If only I hadn't sucked. Great job, Martian! Line up the next one. |
Thunder... without your help the Music Trivia thread would'nt have lasted so long last time. Let's make it a hit again!
Martian, looks like it's your turn! |
Hmm.. well, let's stick with festivals.
It's been 40 years since this festival took place in California, catapulting numerous musicians to stardom; including one particular left-handed guitarist. Name the festival and the man. |
the monterey pop festival.
jimi hendrix. pennebaker's film is one of the best... |
Right and right, roachboy. You're up.
|
away from festivals then.
miles davis wanted to assemble the greatest rock band in the world. between 1969 and 1975, his bands toured rock venues, being put on strange double bills with neil young and the steve miller band at the fillmore for example. this audience cross-over meant that miles' bands of this period were not only lovely, but were also career-making gigs for many of the band members. name 3 of the musicians whose public careers started with miles' bands of this period (between "in a silent way" and "panagea") |
This is a great question, I think I know one, but am totally stumped on the other two. Looks like you're only 4 hours from an official stumper, roachboy.
You would be the first stumper of the new Music Trivia era! |
i dont know how to figure out when the time has lapsed...
there are alot of folk--- john mclaughlin chick corea keith jarrett joe zawinul (who played with cannonball adderly for a while before joining miles' electric band--but weather report came out of the miles band and so seems to owe something of its trajectory to this cross-over exposure) colin walcott (later of oregon) ================================================ let's try again then. hip hop question: who coined the expression "turntablist"? |
Quote:
I'm off to work, but if correct I'll have another question ready when I get home. |
Roachboy, up above your name and avatar there should be a time stamp.
Chick Corea was the one I knew. Great question. Is Anxst correct? I'm not much of a hip hop guy. |
i was thinking q-bert, who coined the expression in the mid 1990s to differentiate more underground, skill-heavy dj practices from what has become mainstream. right about the time that copyright-infringement-suit happy people were driving dj practices underground. if mainstream hip-hop blows now, these lawsuits are a big reason why. go american copyright law!
here's an easy one. cream had a huge hit with "spoonful" its also been covered by every blues-influenced artist in the universe--my favorite version is by koko taylor. who wrote the song? |
I've been reading up on bassists lately, and thus I know that Spoonful was actually written by the one and only Willie Dixon.
Let's get a little more modern now. Although he's best known for his bass skills, this man originally started out playing trumpet and had no ambitions whatsoever to join a rock band. He still plays the horn regularly now, and has appeared blowing his horn on albums for Jane's Addiction and the Mars Volta, among others. Who the hell am I talking about? |
Flea? I know he's played trumpet with Jane's and Mars Volta at times.

So, it looks like no one really knows. Oh well, at least I took a good stab at it. Great question! |
Quote:
You're up. |
Wow, I'm a little surprised to be right. I figured it couldn't be that obvious - and I mean that in the least snobby way possible.
OK, after Sugar broke up, Bob Mould released a solo album and then quit the music industry to work for who? The company or the industry is acceptable. |
Quote:
Husker Du, where are you? I'll wait for confirmation in case I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure. |
Got the industry and company. You're up.
|
I'll continue with the "Who am I?" line of questions. I like that format.
Having lost a lung in the Korean war, I found myself unable to sing, so I focused on guitar playing. I recorded the only instrumental song to be banned from airplay on American radio during the 50's, and punched holes in the speakers of my amp doing it so it sounded more like the live version. Who am I? (Bonus meaningless internet points if you can name the song.) |
Anxst, this is officially a stumper. Man... I remember hearing about the punch the hole in the speaker thing and I know when you say it I'm gonna keel over.

It's Link Wray (and his Wray Men). The song was Rumble. Okay, new question: Originally formed as a fill in punk act at the First International UK Punk Festival, this band had Simon Ritchie (later known as Sid Vicious) as their drummer. Later, after a drastic sound and lineup change, they went on to influence bands such as Tricky and Garbage. Robert Smith (of the cure) even spent 2 or 3 years in the group in the early 80's. Who are they? |
Siouxsie & the Banshees.......... great band and wonder voice in Siouxsie Sioux.
One of the better "underground" groups (Smiths, Dead Kennedys, Pogues, Psych Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, the Cult, Lords of the New Church, Violent Femmes, etc) of the 80's. My best friend in high school lived for that type of rock, he even named his cat Morrisey. I was 60's and 80's pop rock. I didn't appreciate that music until later in the 90's. |
Quote:
You're up! |
Cool.....
very simple one..... In the 70's a solo act (female) sang a song rumored to be about another very popular singer (male)..... OR in the 70's a famed group sang about a famed female artist, rumor says... Both songs were among each's biggest hits and appears on their respective greatest hits album. name either song and the act singing or the person the song was about extra points if you guess both. |
The first one you're talking about is Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", but even she hasn't told who it is about. Rumors have been told that is was about everyone from James Taylor, to Mick Jagger to Warren Beatty.
As for the second one, A group singing about a girl... You're gonna have to get more specific :D My guess is KISS singing "Plaster Caster", even though it does not appear on any of their greatest hits packages. |
Quote:
I was going to say Marianne Faithful with "why d'ya do it?" But i suspect it wasn't a greatest hit... although I believe the tune was written about Mick Jagger. |
Quote:
|
Hmmmm, I'd always heard "You're So Vain" was about Barry Manilow....
Maybe its just like DB Cooper's true identity - better left unanswered. |
Yes, "You're So Vain" was the one by the female artist. Perri is right she never came out and claimed it but she has hinted in interviews.
Witchy Woman by the Eagles had a similar rumor.... being about Stevie Nicks This was false, however, there were rumors at the time that Witchy Woman was released, the song was about Linda Rondstadt. |
Now that you mention it, I have the rumors about "Witchy Woman". The story about Linda Rondstadt makes sense since they were her backup band at one point.
Ohhhhh Lets see... Hmmm... Do I go easy, or come out with a stumper? Let's continue on with "Songs About Chicks" for $200 Alex, Who was the Derek & The Domino's hit "Layla" written about and name at least one other song written about her for bonus points. |
