Fantastic SONG LYRICS
I thought it would be nice to have a chance to speak about what song lyrics really get to you. Here’s one of mine..
“I come awake, with the gift to womankind you’re still asleep, but the gift don’t seem to mind” WAKE UP AND MAKE LOVE WITH ME by Ian Dury and the Blockheads The line is so crude - but ohhhh so honest! |

Since hearing that song, would have to be one of my favourite lyrics to date. Its a song that you listen to, and just go 'wow, thats intense' Either that, or Tool - Rosetta Stoned, based on the 'ahhh FUCK' principle that occurs to me all too often: Quote:

"How can we understand
Riots by the people for the people Who are only destroying themselves And when you see a frightened Person who is frightened by the People who are scorching this earth." I'M JUST A SINGER IN A ROCK AND ROLL BAND by The Moody Blues Great lyrics that are even more apt today than when the song was released in 1972! |

I've got a bunch, but I'll start with about my favorite:
Loneliness and frustration We both came down with an acute case And when the lights came up at two I caught a glimpse of you And your face looked like something Death brought with him in his suitcase Your pretty face It looked so wasted Another pretty face Devastated The French Inhaler He stamped and mailed her "So long, Norman" She said, "So long, Norman" The French Inhaler - Warren Zevon

Great choice Fast Forward. Coincidentally, my choice would be the opening song of that album "Lost in a Lost World" I just couldn't pull out the best of this song, its all so good. Seventh Sojourn was recorded in 1972, all things considered these lyrics really are as applicable today as they were then, unfortunately.
I woke today, I was crying Lost in a lost world So many people are dying Lost in a lost world Some of them are living an illusion Bounded by the darkness of their minds In their eyes it's nation, against nation, against nation With racial pride Sad hearts they hide Thinking only of themselves They shun the light (shun the light) They think they're right (think they're right) Living in their empty shells Oh, can you see their bodies thrashing (so many people, so many people) Crashing down around their feet Angry people in the street Telling them they've had their fill Of politics, people who kill Grow... the seed of evolution (so many people, so many people) Revolution everyone It's just another form of gun To do again what they have done (so many people, so many people) With all our brothers, youngest sons. (so many people, so many people) Everywhere you go you see them searching Everywhere you turn you feel the pain Everyone is looking for the answers Well look again, come on my friend Love will find us in the end Come on my friend (on my friend) We've got to bend (got to bend) Down on our knees and say a prayer Oh, can you see the world is pining (so many people, so many people) Pining for someone who really cares enough to share his love With all of us so we can be An ever loving family Have we forgotten who loves who (so many people, so many people) Children from a family tree That's longer than a centipede Started long ago when you and I Where only love.... (so many people, so many people) I woke today, I was crying Lost in a lost world So many people are dying Lost in a lost world So many people, so many people People lost in a lost world So many people, so many people People lost in a lost world Last edited by Craven Morehead; 10-30-2007 at 12:25 PM.. |

I often find that the most beautiful and inspiring lyrics are those that don't seem to be anything particularly special on their own - they don't bring you to any particular conclusion and yet through the ambiguity of the lyrics and the beauty of the music, you're pulled in and forced to look beyond the ambiguity of the words, assign them their significance and see a part of yourself reflected in the words of someone else.
Radiohead - Scatterbrain I'm walking out in a force ten gale. birds thrown around, bullets for hail. the roof is pulling off by its fingernails. your voice is rapping on my window sill yesterday's headlines blown by the wind. yesterday's people end up scatterbrain. then any fool can easy pick a hole. (I only wish I could fall in) a moving target in a firing range. somewhere I'm not scatterbrain. somewhere I'm not scatterbrain. lightning fuse powercut. scatterbrain

FF, for fear of dominating this thread and sort of derailing it, I'll post this wonderful YouTube video set to Lost in a Lost world and no more. Keep in mind this song was recorded 35 years ago. When I listened to it then I had thoughts of Viet Nam. Of the Cold War. Of a totally different world that we live in today. Or maybe not so different, after all.

"Smoking the cigarettes more than I should
My hands wont stop shaking and that can't be good I would forget you if I only could Think about anything else Slow dance at the end of the night Everyones looking who cares if its right You're head on my chest, I held you so tight Don't care what they had to say My feet were to drunk to keep step in time But we held fast and we made it through fine You smiled a lot Hell, you smiled a lot Chairs up on tables and mopping up floors And we're still dancing just like before You held me tight Ah, you held me tight Light from the disco ball surrounds us with stars And I looked like trouble right from the start You told me so Hell, you told me so Smoking the cigarettes more than I should My hands wont stop shaking and that can't be good I would forget you if I only could Think about anything else Well that slow dance didn't last very long So now I guess I'll be moving on It was nice Goddamn it was nice" Slow Dancing- Lucero I love this song and the lyrics hit me harder than any other song ever has.

Looking out the window, the trees are getting closer it seems.
Thinking bout you Darling. Adding up the cost of these dreams. Strapped to this projectile, just a blink ago I was back in school. Smoking by the gym door, practicing my rock-star attitude And I'm scared shitless of what's coming next. I'm scared shitless, these angels I see in the trees are waiting for me. The engines have stopped now. We all know we are going down. Last call for alcohol. Sure wish I could have another round. And I'm scared shitless of what's coming next. Scared shitless, these angels I see in the trees are waiting for me. Waiting for me. Friends in the swamp. Friends on the ground, in the trees. Angels and fuselage. |

So, today I'm in a lovey mood and I've got three songs...
When your body gets weak - Babyface Tonight I'm gonna hold you I'm gonna touch you, and lay you down Tonight I'm gonna kiss you I'm gonna taste you, all the way down Tonight you don't have to be lonely You need only to call me And I will be down When your body gets weak And you need some affection, oh baby I'll lay you down When your body's in need And you need some attention, oh lady I'll lay you down Tonight when I've been inside you I'll lay down beside you, and stay all night long, yes I will [ Lyrics provided by www.mp3lyrics.org ] Tonight I just want you to teach me Girl I just want to please thee So just let's get it on, baby Tonight there be no intermissions I have only one mission That's turning you on [ HOOK ] Tonight you don't have to be lonely You need only to call me And I will be down [ HOOK ] The Day - Babyface Twas late December the news came And I got so excited, I cried all day And you were such a lovely, precious SIGHT When I saw our baby in your eyes It was like falling deep in love I heard the angels cry above I felt a blessing straight from God The day that you gave me a son I called 'bout everyone I knew Just think, I'll be a father 'cause of you There's no greater love than what you gave A brand new baby on the way HOOK Oh such tears of joy, I've never known I can't remember It's like a song, I've never heard I've never sung, but know the words HOOK and The Colour of my Love - Celine Dion I'll paint my mood in shades of blue Paint my soul to be with you I'll sketch your lips in shaded tones Draw your mouth to my own I'll draw your arms around my waist Then all doubt I shall erase I'll paint the rain that softly lands on your wind-blown hair I'll trace a hand to wipe out your tears A look to calm your fears A silhouette of dark and light While we hold each other oh so tight I'll paint a sun to warm your heart Swearing that we'll never part That's the colour of my love I'll paint the truth Show how I feel Try to make you completely real I'll use a brush so light and fine To draw you close and make you mine I'll paint the truth Show how I feel Try to make you completely real I'll use a brush so light and fine To draw you close and make you mine I'll paint a sun to warm your heart Swearing that we'll never part That's the colour of my love I'll draw the years all passing by So much to learn so much to try And with this ring our lives will start Swearing that we'll never part I offer what you cannot buy Devoted love until we die those are just three for now...but really really good quality FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC lyrics

Descriptions of emptiness and longing that I've listened to a time or two:
Sometimes In winter I gaze into the streets and walk through snow and city sleet behind your room. Sometimes in winter forgotten memories remember you behind the trees with leaves that cry. By the window once i waited for you, laughing slightly you would run, trees alone would chill us in the meadow, making love in the evening sun. Now your gone girl, and the lamp posts call your name, i can hear them in the spring of frozen rain. Now your gone girl, and the times slow down til dawn its a cold room and the walls ask where you've gone Sometimes in winter I love you when the good times seem like memories in the spring that never came. Sometimes in winter, i wish the empty streets would fill with laughter from your tears to ease my pain. ****************************** The summer had inhaled And held its breath too long. The winter looked the same, As if it had never gone, And through an open window, Where no curtain hung, I saw you, I saw you, Coming back to me. One begins to read between The pages of a look. The sound of sleepy music, And suddenly, you're hooked. I saw you, I saw you, Coming back to me. You came to stay and live my way, Scatter my love like leaves in the wind. You always say that you won't go away, But I know what it always has been, It always has been. A transparent dream Beneath an occasional sigh Most of the time, I just let it go by. Now I wish it hadn't begun. I saw you, I saw you, Coming back to me. Strolling the hill, Overlooking the shore, I realize I've been here before. The shadow in the mist Could have been anyone I saw you, I saw you, Coming back to me. Small things like reasons Are put in a jar. Whatever happened to wishes, Wished on a star? Was it just something That I made up for fun? I saw you, I saw you, Coming back to me. ***************************** Sometimes, in the morning I catch a falling dream Disappearing scene. And I think about a someone That I will never see again And now it's only me again. Sometimes, in the morning I think I hear a phrase Echo through the haze, And it's just beyond my vision It's something that she said one night Before we went to bed one night. Sometimes, in the morning When I go back to sleep Trying hard to keep, All my memories in motion Wishing she were here my love Whispering in my ear, my love. |

You see your vision and no one else's
Your every word filled with sarcasm Crucify people with invisible knowledge Verbal destruction with each compulsion We will see where you go The future for you is nowhere Every minute a cliche of your kind Too much to say from a person with no respect Your accusations you will regret From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison Take away the power, a shallow person you will find. What would you do without your pathetic narrow-minded approach to life, that reflects your lack of abilities Your opinions are self-destructive Despair is your gain, delight is corruption Destined to fall prey to your stories, creating problems for your consumption We will see where you go The future for you is nowhere Every minute a cliche of your kind Too much to say from a person with no respect Your accusations you will regret From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison Take away the power, a shallow person you will find. Death - Mentally Blind The lyrics in this song apply to way too many people it seems O_o

Death - Trapped In A Corner
I want to watch you drown in your lies. The end of your masquerade, a matter of time Intertwining lies, domination, control Feed his twisted nature It is sickening to see dreams die A word of advice, fate's patience is growing short. Fake down to your mind and appearance You will fall short of the dreams to destroy In time you will find yourself trapped in a corner These four words my friend, I promise you will not forget I am one of many that see through your lies Hiding will do you no good, many seek revenge. Soon to become a victim of what you live to create, and cannot have. It is sickening to see dreams die A word of advice, fate's patience is growing short. Fake down to your mind and appearance You will fall short of the dreams to destroy Death - Flesh And The Power It Holds Passion is a poison laced with pleasure bitter sweet |

EDIT: Here's a live clip of Angels and Fuselage. Here's another Drive-by Truckers song I love. It's called "Sounds Better in the Song" and is off the "Decoration Day" album: When I saw her standing there, with her bright eyes and shining hair, she was looking back at me. Some are meant to sing, some are meant to talk and some aren’t meant to say a thing. But when she opened up her mouth and that sweet voice came out I lost track of my own name. Now she’s found herself, and I lost mine and I’m just another guy who can’t give her anything. Well the drifter, He holds on to his youth just like it was money in the bank. And “Lord knows, I can’t change” sounds better in the song than it does with hell to pay. I might as well of slipped that ring on your finger from a window of a van as it drove away. Now she’s found herself, and I lost mine and I’m just another guy who can’t give her anything. Dreams are given to you when you’re young enough to dream them before they can do you any harm. They don’t start to hurt, until you try to hold on to them after seeing how they really are. She used to dream them with me, every single crazy one, until they started hurting her too, now she’s got some of her own and outgrowing me, might be the best thing for her she’s ever done. A light that shines as bright as hers can’t be kept in the shadows for too long. A heart that wants to live and a soul that wants to give can’t just sit at home alone. Lord, she’s give me everything and never wanted anything I couldn’t give. Just what was inside of me. And now she’s found herself, and I lost mine and I’m just another guy who can’t give her anything. Last edited by Derwood; 11-19-2007 at 09:19 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

The band comprised of high school friends where one of the teachers hated them for having long hair (yeah, it was that long ago) and generally badgered them for their "rock attitude". So when it came time to give the band a name they decided to give the teacher the utmost insult they could think of .... yep the teacher's name was Lynard Skinner. Rock on! |

Wrenched into the world, deanesthetized
Blurry images fight their way through halfway opened eyes Awakened by alarm, fifteen minutes of hygiene Twenty minutes of eating, thirty seconds to the door I looked outside, I looked into the eyes Of the impersonal mob I've seen a thousand times before Feelings under covers like books on a shelf If we're scared of one another We must be scared of ourselves More than just another crowd We need a gathering instead Drink drink in the badlands, liquid bread for the poor Another member of the crowd goes down to drown at the liquor store Choose your escape in the heartland of product and demand When you feel like a wasp in the swarm You gotta get away anyway that you can Operation Ivy's The Crowd Abso-fucking-lutely amazing lyrics from such young kids in '89. |
