Van Halen -- anyone?

Not having been a part of the rock n roll scene until i was in college, i apparently missed lots of good bands and lots of good music

i just got done running the spotlight for Van Halen rehearsals and couldn't help but realize how little i knew of Van Halen

So here's the point of this thread...if any of you are still following...

Help me and each other learn of Van Halen through stories and your own recollection. I'm sure it's quite easy to bring up google and do a quick search on Van Halen, but there's no fun in that. What I was hoping were stories my grandfather used to tell, minus the grandfather part, and hopefully, we'll all learn something about Van Halen and about our experiences.

When did you hear of Van Halen? What song caught your attention? What's your favorite song? Who was your favorite lead and why? Experiences while listening to Van Halen?

Let's all sit back and enjoy some good ol' fashioned story time

my friend had diver down and that got me into them. i, like most kids my age, ended up with all their records (up to diver down) and a bunch of van halen logo's all over my notebooks, and tapping eruption on my guitar.

sadly, i never saw them as a band. i saw van hagar and they sucked the balls, i saw diamond dave and that show kicked ass. i still have the records and i still listen to them now and again.

I was always a Diamond Dave fan. I liked that he was goofy while attempting to project an attitude of extreme sexiness, and yet underneath he seemed to be saying that it was all a joke and why don't you just play along.

Sammy Hagar didn't appear to have a sense of humor. And Gary Cherronne should have stayed in Extreme, where he was great.

Older brothers and sisters got me into VH when I was a wee lad. I love the Dave era, but I actually think they were a better band with Sammy. As far as their current tour goes, save your money. First, they are wrong for screwing Michael Anthony. Secondly, the vocals sound like shit. I have seen several videos from pre-tour rehearsals and some from early in the tour. As I type this, I am listening to a bootleg from the Philly show this past Wednesday. Dave is a joke these days and the backgrounds vocals sound like fingernails on a chalkboard. Eddie is starting to put things together on guitar, but he's still sloppier than any tour they ever did pre-2004.

You young ones! :P

One of my first vinyls was the first VH album, way back in 1979~80.
Was in high school when Roth left. I knew quite a few people who were actually very bummed by that.

But one of the funniest memories was hearing how there was a rider in their contract about taking out all the brown M&M's in their bowl of candy in the dressing room. They tore the place apart for that not being followed.

i thought it was cool when i learned eddie and alex were brothers with the name van halen...then it was even more of a shock to see some kid playing bass only to find out that was wolfgang, eddie's kid. he was good and super poised for his age

roth didn't show up for the final rehearsal so on the last day, they just played instruments to the lighting program. funny because the spot lights that were designated for roth were told just to lock off the light on the stage as if he were there

speaking of the m&m's their coolers had weird requests like 2 orange gatorades, 1 red bull, and 3 waters

one cool thing about this tour, there is a false drum that is actually a fridge that wolfgang pulls drinks out of
