With not lots of information to go on these are some good bands Testament, Ministry, Fates Warning, Sepultura, and Judas Priest.
There are also metal hair bands, but might not be what you are looking for, such as Skid Row, Ratt, Dokken, Cinderella, and Motley Crue. Hope this helps get you on your way |

For fruitier moods, there's always Queensrcyhe.
Could not agree more with Mercuryhg - Only things with that album is the mix/engineering is way off. I've been hoping for a remastered/Mobile Fidelity verson of that album for years...if that album had the engineering of ...And Justice for All - I'd wear out the CD. Buncha good bands. Lemme go out on a limb here and suggest something a little more contemporary yet so utterly good, "High on Fire"... wow fuckin amazing, dude's all over the fretboard. My favorites are Bahgdad, Hung drawn and quatered, and Surrounded by Thieves.

I think you'd really enjoy Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime if you like Maiden. (My official Cheese Detector does, however, report a "moderate" level of cheese, for almost anything Queensryche does)
Also, check out Gamma Ray's No World Order. Its more power-metal-ish, but it definitely fell from the Maiden tree, and didn't land very far from the roots (Cheese factor - "medium-high") (EDIT: hmm.. I just listened to it again, and I have to say it fell a bit further from the Maiden tree than I originally anticipated.. still, its really not bad) Personally I love In Flames, and would second the reccommendation any day, but since you want semi-intelligible lyrics, you might not enjoy the aorta-rupturing death-metal screaming that In Flames is famous for If you care to risk it with something a bit out there in the left field, check out Divercia's Modus Operandi. I am really not sure where to classify this. It has a power-metal feel to it, but... its got something else too. Anyway, their music is quite different from what I expected, in a good way. (Cheese detector is not picking up a signal.. is it just me or are these guys really serious?) EDIT#2: Oh yea, check out some earlier Fates Warning, like The Spectre Within.

Guess it depends on what you define as "Old School."
I don't put Pantera or Anthrax into old school. You have to go back farther. Try Sabbath, Rainbow, UFO, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Merciful Fate, Killing Joke.....

Hmm.. sounds like you like melodic, atmospheric metal. Iced Earth DEFINATELY sounds they're right up your alley, possibly some Manowar, Judas Priest (Painkiller is a classic!), as well as Blind Guardian.. man there's so much! Go check out the Disgruntled Metalhead forums at metal-rules.com and ask for more suggestions there. They're bound to offer hundreds of suggestions!

Pretty much what's been said I agree with... Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax, Motorhead, Pre-Black Album Metallica and the like. Slayer also works.
For more of a Death Metal taste, Arch Enemy has an outstanding old-schoolish feel. The best old-school Death metal band there is though is Death, if you ask me. Grave are good too, but I don't know how "old-school" we're talking. I suppose Napalm Death would go there as well. EDIT: +Type O Negative +Opeth (not Damnation... though Damnation kicks ass) +Biohazard +Kevorkian (Very Opeth-y)
