hey. i have a crazy ass music palette, and i recently got into metal from a friend. I'm starting to really like pantera's cemetary gates and iron maiden's hallowed be thy name. can anybody point me to similar band's or songs?! i'd really appreciate it. these guitar riffs really do it for me. preferably songs where u can semi understsand lyrics as opposed to jus gutteral sounds commin outta someone's ass. no offense, cause i love that shit, but im on a .. uh 'quest' heh to find some good shit like the stuff above. thanks, people. much appreciated!

Megadeth, Metallica or AC|DC I guess.:)
|
With not lots of information to go on these are some good bands Testament, Ministry, Fates Warning, Sepultura, and Judas Priest.
There are also metal hair bands, but might not be what you are looking for, such as Skid Row, Ratt, Dokken, Cinderella, and Motley Crue. Hope this helps get you on your way :) |

|

get Maiden Japan... heh. get any judas priest disc up to 1986. as mentioned Ozzy is always good.. black sabbath.. etc. oh.. and get some Jag Panzer... |
Pantera and Slayerrrrr , gods of metal.
|
Megadeth - Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction
|
For fruitier moods, there's always Queensrcyhe.
Could not agree more with Mercuryhg - Only things with that album is the mix/engineering is way off. I've been hoping for a remastered/Mobile Fidelity verson of that album for years...if that album had the engineering of ...And Justice for All - I'd wear out the CD. |
you absolutely NEED the reign in blood album by SLAYER
|
I agree with nate_dawg, Slayer's Reign in Blood is the best thrash album ever made.
If you like the heavy guitar riffs try S.O.D. or D.R.I. Old Anthrax is good to. Try Among the Living. |
BIOHAZARD!
thats i i have to say about that |
Reign in Blood, Among the Living, Master of Puppets; all complete fucking classics
Iron Maiden & Judas Preist, go without saying! Mindfunk were cool too. |
Oh wow, Slayer and Anthrax!! Sure has been awhile since I heard those classics. Going to have to break out my own old school supply of hard core tunes.
|
Get Youthanasia by Megadeth or if you want to hear the best at their best Master of Puppets. There is no equal.
|
In Flames is a newer metal band ill bet you would like
|
Armored Saint certainly rocks
- Fozzy (they're modern, but they are talented and can play solos) - Iron Maiden - Anthrax - Racer X (again, modern but extremely talented) |
biohazard, anthrax, guns n roses, primus, black sabbath, metallica, mega death, cannibal corpse, slayer, pantera, sepultura, dream theathere, queensryche, king crimson that al i can thin of for now
|
Suicidal Tendencies, Napalm Death

Old Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Anthrax, White Zombie, and Motörhead.
|
Buncha good bands. Lemme go out on a limb here and suggest something a little more contemporary yet so utterly good, "High on Fire"... wow fuckin amazing, dude's all over the fretboard. My favorites are Bahgdad, Hung drawn and quatered, and Surrounded by Thieves.
|
Rob Zombie!!! YAY!!!
|
I think you'd really enjoy Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime if you like Maiden. (My official Cheese Detector does, however, report a "moderate" level of cheese, for almost anything Queensryche does)
Also, check out Gamma Ray's No World Order. Its more power-metal-ish, but it definitely fell from the Maiden tree, and didn't land very far from the roots :D (Cheese factor - "medium-high") (EDIT: hmm.. I just listened to it again, and I have to say it fell a bit further from the Maiden tree than I originally anticipated.. still, its really not bad) Personally I love In Flames, and would second the reccommendation any day, but since you want semi-intelligible lyrics, you might not enjoy the aorta-rupturing death-metal screaming that In Flames is famous for :D If you care to risk it with something a bit out there in the left field, check out Divercia's Modus Operandi. I am really not sure where to classify this. It has a power-metal feel to it, but... its got something else too. Anyway, their music is quite different from what I expected, in a good way. (Cheese detector is not picking up a signal.. is it just me or are these guys really serious?) EDIT#2: Oh yea, check out some earlier Fates Warning, like The Spectre Within. |
Why hasn't anybody said Tool yet?
and while i'm at it Killswitch Engage Opeth |
they're not really old classic metal, but Children of Bodom. They're really good. Check out Bed of Razors and Hatebreeder.
|
deceased maybe, i think i remember their lyric being somewhat intelligible
|
Atreyu, Iced Earth, Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom, Gamma Ray, Jag Panzer... to name a few

yes, in my reading of the thread i forgot what the original question was. my fault on that one. nonetheless those bands good. |
You might go to mp3.com and check out the power metal section.
|
Pantera is the god of metal. Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Ozzy. Shit, there are so many awesome metal bands, lol.
If you are into newer metal at all, Slipknot and Mudvayne are fucking awesome. |
Guess it depends on what you define as "Old School."
I don't put Pantera or Anthrax into old school. You have to go back farther. Try Sabbath, Rainbow, UFO, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Merciful Fate, Killing Joke..... |
Motley Crue.............. Ohyea
|
Hairband/Metal Must have Albums:
ACDC: Back in Black Motley Crue: Dr. Feelgood Metallica: Metallica Guns N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction Ozzy Osbourne: Blizzard of Ozz Van Halen: 1984 [Begin really cheesy hair band classic albums] Warrant: Cherry Pie Skid Row: Skid Row Def Leppard: Hysteria Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet Poison: Open Up & Say... Ahh!/Look What the Cat Dragged in Quiet Riot: Metal Health Whitesnake: Whitesnake Great White: Twice Shy Twisted Sister: Stay Hungry [/end really cheesy hairband albums] |
Hmm.. sounds like you like melodic, atmospheric metal. Iced Earth DEFINATELY sounds they're right up your alley, possibly some Manowar, Judas Priest (Painkiller is a classic!), as well as Blind Guardian.. man there's so much! Go check out the Disgruntled Metalhead forums at metal-rules.com and ask for more suggestions there. They're bound to offer hundreds of suggestions! :)

Pretty much what's been said I agree with... Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax, Motorhead, Pre-Black Album Metallica and the like. Slayer also works.
For more of a Death Metal taste, Arch Enemy has an outstanding old-schoolish feel. The best old-school Death metal band there is though is Death, if you ask me. Grave are good too, but I don't know how "old-school" we're talking. I suppose Napalm Death would go there as well. EDIT: +Type O Negative +Opeth (not Damnation... though Damnation kicks ass) +Biohazard +Kevorkian (Very Opeth-y) |
"Slipknot and Mudvayne are fucking awesome."
lmmfao |
Savatage is super powered up power metal
|
Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, W.A.S.P.
