Seeking techno/house recommendations...
Lately, I've been addicted to the song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" by Daft Punk. For those not familiar, you can hear in in the following YouTube video.
I checked out Daft Punk's "Human After All" album, and was not impressed, but I gather their "Discovery" album was better. I generally have not been a big techo/house/trance fan, as I find some of the music can be a bit too repetitive and tiring, but after hearing "Harder, Better..." I'm really looking to be exposed to similarily enjoyable music. I love the instrumentals and the beat is such that it's hard to resist not tapping a foot or shaking something. If anyone has any band/album recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it. It's reached the point where I am listening to this one song on repeat for extended periods of time, and while I do enjoy it, I'd also like to hear other music that is similar in style. Thanks!

Techno is a very specific sub-style of electronic music.
Techno & Trance are different. Heres some of my favorites nowadays, at least within the realm of progressive trance, progressive house, electro house, stuff like that... I really dig Blendbrank's productions right now. He's my biggest current fascination.
I get most my music from Beatport, most these tracks can be heard there. |

I love the Daft Punk album 'Discovery' but would agree that some of their other work isn't as downright danceable!
Lately I would recommend... Hot Chip 'The Warning' Album (also their new single 'Piano song') Calvin Harris New young pony club 'Ice cream' single Digitalism 'Idealism' Album The Klaxons 'Myths of the near future' Album (especially the 'Not over yet' cover...awesome!) I tend to enjoy crossover dance music that fuses elements of indie and electro and trancey stuff and I feel Daft Punk and these recommendations all fit the bill x |

Discovery is a great album
i have a few other recommendations for you; hopefully you will enjoy them because they are similar to Daft Punk. see if you can find Vitalic - OK Cowboy ... very good French dance music, certainly influenced by Daft Punk. i'd recommend listening to the album, but here are some youtube clips if you'd rather go that route. http://www.youtube.com/results.php?search_query=vitalic http://www.vitalic.citizen-records.com/ Ed Banger Records was started by Pedro Winter aka Busy P aka Daft Punk's manager. there are many good releases on the label. SebastiAn has some good stuff (check out the Ross Ross Ross EP), Justice is probably the most popular artist, then there are DJ Medhi and Uffie who are a bit more hip hop & pop, respectively. there are more artists too, i have only heard a handful. http://www.discogs.com/label/Ed+Banger+Records http://www.bleep.com/?label=Ed+Banger |

I must recommend Daft Punk's first album "Homework". IMHO, they've never been able to match the pure genius of that sound. Also, I'll second Vitalic's "OK Cowboy", especially "Poney Pt. 1". I heard that in a mix by Slam (whom I also recommend); absolutely wonderful.
I spin house music as a hobby, so I get myself into as many sub-genres of it as I can handle. I have a soft spot for French house, so anything by Alan Braxe (& Fred Falke), Etienne de Crecy, Mike 303, anybody related to Daft Punk, etc. Getting a little into the Tribal area, I've been really into Alan Barratt. This guy knows how to fuse a funky bassline with tribal elements very well. If you want something a bit more minimal, check out Jesper Dahlback (at least some of his stuff) or anything on the Svek label. Riding the new electro wave, I prefer the stuff by Carl A. Finlow (a.k.a Silicon Scally). It's not all pop-y; more subdued but very nice. Moving to techno (similar to house in many ways), I recommend people like Alexander Kowalski, Michael Mayer (or anything on the Kompakt label), Zeta Reticula (a.k.a Umek), Jake Fairley (Canadian!!), Trentemoller (good mix of tech and house) and Antoine Clamaran (he moves between genres, but still makes good tech).

I'll put in my two cents.
House music. Armand Van Helden - Nympho. I like all his albums, but Nympho is the easiest for people to enjoy. He drags a few songs out on Gandi Khan. Otherwise, I enjoy drum and bass and DJ Fresh and Logistics are my current favorites there. |

GABRIEL & DRESDEN
Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden, from SF, both VERY talented DJs who teamed up a few years back and have really done some interesting work. Tracking Treasure Down is really good, as are several other pieces. I'm listening to a mix of Nicole Sponberg's "Resurrection" right now and it's amazing. I think they're often overlooked because they only last year released their first full album. They do a lot of work on the FX drama Nip/Tuck, and should have an album this fall. I can't wait. SASHA One of the most established DJs in trance today, Alexander Coe has been cmposing trance and tecnho since the late 80s. He's worked with everyone, especially Digweed (another great), and can do no wrong in my eyes. More to come... |
