Amy Winehouse
I just got the "Back To Black" cd this weekend--wow! Her sounds is very 60's girls group (although she's not part of a group, heh), with some very modern, gritty topics and enough "language" to merit a permanent parental advisory inset on the cover.
It's really great to hear a competent, consistent revival of this style (I don't know if it'd be accurate to call it Motown Sound, would it?), with relevant subject matter (although sad broken love songs are timeless, eh?). Has anyone else tried this unique artist? By the way, the cd is on sale for around $8 at Best Buy (this past weekend, anyways).

She's great.
Interestingly she's not lying when she says "they tried to make me go to rehab"...

Wow, all this positive review for a singer I've never even heard of?
I think it is time for me to jump on the bandwagon. *Jetstream will be back in a few days after digesting the apparently awesome sound that is Amy Winehouse.*

A friend just lent me a couple of her cd's, and although I like that style of music, I find her very annoying. Don't like her voice, not sure if she is purposely trying to sing out of the key or just can't sing in tune and what is this business with sometimes pronouncing the first part of the word but not the rest of it. Sounds like Tweety Bird with marbles in her mouth
Maybe she is better live I don't know. Amazing also because I love almost everything by anyone. Oh well, now the Tragically Hip have company as the worst crap I have ever heard. |

better live? doesn't seem so since she's forgotten lyrics to her songs since she was so wasted.

I really loved her when I first heard her and bought her CDs, but soon got tired. At that point it tends to sound grating. Now I just "shuffle" her in from time to time and I can enjoy her again.
Sometimes too much of a good thing gets nauseating.

Her music is mildly entertaining, and the concept is decent, but her execution leaves something to be desired. Frankly, her music deserves to be put in better hands than hers, and she's only getting worse as time goes on.

It's funny that this thread should be bumped on the same day Ms. Winehouse makes headlines (yet again).

Yeah, my best friend and I agree that the best way to listen to Amy Winehouse is illegally pirated, so we don't feel guilty about contributing to her bad behavior.
But I still love her music. "Black to Black" just tears me up when I listen to it, because it reminds me of a vignette from my own life. I suppose that's what I do like most about her music--it's very easy for me to relate to. She feeds my inner bad girl.
