Favorite Music Videos and why?

"I Feel Love" by the Blue Man Group featuring Venus Hum

Just such a beautiful rendition of that song. Check it out if you want, I watch this video seriously every day, it just makes me smile.

White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl
An original concept, to be sure, the fully-lego music video is visually stunning and incredibly creative.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XRDi67G0Siw"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XRDi67G0Siw" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Michael Jackson - Thriller
Probably the most cinimatic of all music videos and the quintessential music video of the 80s, Thriller is everything that's right about music videos. Also, Vincent Price is incredible.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rT90keJ51bY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rT90keJ51bY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
Mesmerizing music with an incredible facsimile to the old 20s and 30s silver screen science fiction fantasy movies, paying homage to classic From the Earth to the Moon.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EsZYqaSc4cU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EsZYqaSc4cU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I'll skip Take On Me because I don't like the song....

Röyksopp - Remind Me
Really quirky video using the visuals you might get from directions and such. Cool stuff.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lBvaHZIrt0o"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lBvaHZIrt0o" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Ok Go sucks.

SecretMethod70 04-08-2007 09:17 PM

I'll start off with a little Mark Romanek genius:

Nine Inch Nails - Closer
I really like how this video captures the feel of old film while having modern technological inventions throughout, and manages to fit the song extremely well.

Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug
Can't beat Trent Reznor playing Edgar Allen Poe in a rather surrealistic environment :)

Next, a long, but intriguing video:

Tool - Schism
Awesomely creepy.

Finally, I was going to post a Björk video or two, but then I realized pretty much all of her videos are awesome. So, I'm posting just one, but encourage people to check out others on youtube :)

Björk - Human Behavior
Fun. Crazy. Appropriate.

Almost forgot...

The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist
Seriously...this one is just weird.

Daniel_ 04-09-2007 02:53 AM

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

It's just barkig mad.

Glory's Sun 04-09-2007 07:21 AM

Bjork--Pagan Poetry

Best she's ever done

Tool--Prison Sex

love the little dude

Marilyn Manson--Coma White..so good for some many personal reasons.

The greatest of all time?? Pink Floyd--The Wall

mixedmedia 04-09-2007 07:33 AM

I agree on the Closer video. It is an awesome and beautiful piece.

I like Mark Romanek videos more than most of the songs they are made for, lol.

such as...

Madonna's Bedtime Story.

Scream by Michael & Janet Jackson.

Janet Jackson's Got Til It's Gone.

You can tell that I haven't been a regular viewer of music videos in many, many years, lol.

Radiohead's Paranoid Android is a classic.

I also have always like Madonna's video for Vogue...it's very pretty and I love the throwback to old Hollywood stuff.

oh! and Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy video freaks me the hell out, but I like it. :)

Glory's Sun 04-09-2007 07:50 AM

forgot a couple:

Deftones--Digital Bath

Rage Against The Machine--Killing In The Name Of (live)

oh man, I forgot about Aphex Twin :D Come to Daddy is indeed messed up! Have you ever seen Windowlicker?

Cynthetiq 04-09-2007 09:47 AM

I love the white stripes vid...but it pales in comparison to the stop motion originator and innovator Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.

Leto 04-09-2007 09:53 AM

Seldgehammer: Hated the song. video was cool tho.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (NiN cover)

Beautiful song, and also I believe it was Mr. Cash's final video.

Mephex 04-10-2007 08:56 PM

Coolest thread, ever. -edit Excuse me, let me thank you all for sharing, the videos kept me entertained for quite some time. Love it. Maybe some love for youtube is in order, but the framework never made people smile, it's always the ones that use it.

MexicanOnABike 04-10-2007 09:29 PM

pearl jam - Evolution : awesome animated video. and the song is great.

Pink Floyd - The wall : entire movie is the best music video! and i love the style. it's 2hrs long. i wont be posting it!

Every tool video and the two nin vids linked are awesome.

Two favorites:

Slipknot invited a bunch of fans to a house to trash it while playing Duality:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gKs4_CPXUqk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gKs4_CPXUqk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Such a fitting video for One by Metallica:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JwW9L_qzqp8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JwW9L_qzqp8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

One of my favorite songs with the video being a take on the Twilight zone episode, Inside Out by Anthrax:

Glory's Sun 04-11-2007 06:23 AM

Nice ones spec!

The one and only version of Hurt in my book (yes Cash's version sucked)

Skinny Puppy--Worlock

Sepultura--Refuse/Resist

Fear Factory --Ressurection (goddamn they kick so much ass)

Twisted Method--Reach (live) These guys are pretty good for straightedge kids

Mudvayne--Death Blooms (back when they were actually good)

Cynthetiq 04-11-2007 06:28 AM

I dunno.. this video by SadKermit of Hurt is pretty compelling...

imma watch the NIN version again... been a long time...

Jetée 04-11-2007 09:47 PM

I just find art direction and the perfect integration of a song's meaning conveyed by a music video is lost on some people. Here are some examples of what made me convert: (By the way, I agree with about 92% of the choices you guys before me made choosing those as great music vids. kudos!)

Daft Punk: Around the World

{Recommendation: also check out Da Funk}

Blur: Coffee & TV

{Recommendation: also check out Beetlebum}

Enjoy.

Glory's Sun 04-12-2007 04:20 AM

Kermit is the fucking shit.

The Roots - What They Do, video mocks everything you see in every fucking rap video and I love it.

Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty-Three, I think it's an awesome song and video.

MexicanOnABike 04-12-2007 09:40 AM

jetsteam: damn! i forgot that one. Around the world was the 1st great video i saw that made me want to watch it over and over again!

gotta add a favourite from back in the days:
KMC featuring Dhany - I feel so fine : obviously picked for the girls and i liked the song too. so simple yet perfect.

Jamaroquai - Virtual insanity : i love it because i saw a making of and it's actually the whole room that moves. not 3d or anything like that.

This is one of the best live performances of pop music I've ever seen. KT Tunstall puts on an amazing one-woman-band performance with her hit, "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree." There's something about her performance that is simply mesmerizing.

I can't list my favorite music videos without NOFX. When I was a teenager growing up in a conservative Christian household, NOFX and other pop punk bands allowed me to escape the neoconservatism and imagine myself in a completely different world. Fat Mike may be too political nowadays, but he rocked when he was younger. I present to you NOFX -- Stickin in my Eye

Favorite Music Video

Nirvana "You know you're right"
It shows Nirvana live and that's why it's the best video at the moment. (If you like it you should also watch Nirvana "Lithium")

More of the Greatest Music Videos

Cibo Matto - Sugar Water
http://www.mtv.com/videos/cibo-matto...ar-water.jhtml

Quote:

Director Michel Gondry evoked the concept of a "visual palindrome" via his split screen narrative for Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water" clip.
Within their respective frames, Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda rise out of bed and take sugar water showers.
The women exchange a threatening note between frames before a black cat enters the picture and prophesies a vehicular accident.
Perhaps more so than any other music video ever made, "Sugar Water" demands multiple sittings in order to tease out its many ambiguities.
The palindrome structure is merely a point of departure here.
In four short minutes, Gondry both contemplates a cosmic relationship between cause and effect and the existential connection between Hatori and Honda themselves.
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

Quote:

Life sucks, especially when the government milks you dry and doesn't so much as give you a wider sidewalk for your troubles. Walter Stern's video for The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" begins on a fascinating note. Disenchanted that life has reduced him to an emotional zombie, ex-Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft chooses to move only to the beat of his own drum. One may ask, "Who's to say that they're not bumping into him?" Which is precisely the point of the video. Ashcroft's subjective reality declares that the world should move for him and not the other way around. This is his passive response. Both song and video pessimistically acknowledge humanity's smallness and oppression by big business and government. But it's not until the song's hopeful bridge, precisely when Ashcroft stares at his reflection on a car window, that he's forced to acknowledge his responsibility to the world around him and his disenchantment turns into something entirely more hopeful.

Sorry not sure how to post videos, anyway the 2 that come to mind are Johnny Cash - Hurt. I'm not a Cash fan but that video just got to me, especially knowing he died soon afterwards. Also Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy. A very good video that came out when I was in my early teens, it made think about how gay people were treated at the time, and made me more sympathetic towards people.

Green Day - Warning

This one reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer:

I have lots more, but I'll post later...don't want to completely fill up your screens at once. :)

Baraka_Guru 07-22-2007 04:55 PM

I picked these mainly because they culminate my high-school experience. These videos are appealing for their variances in energy, moving from aggressive to restrained... a common enough style at the time, but effective nonetheless.

In both of these videos you get a good harmony between the visuals and the music. Excellently produced in both cases.

Nirvana - "Heart-Shaped Box"
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_9mJF1U3wRU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_9mJF1U3wRU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I give you this one, because these guys rock, and they show that even with a low budget you can be incredibly cool:

Sloan - "Money City Maniacs"
