The Police at the Grammy's

I can't believe there isn't a thread on this already...

So, on the Grammy's last night, The Police had their first real reunion in a couple of decades (I don't think the performance at Sting's wedding counts, nor does the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gig which I get the sense they didn't practice a whole lot for).

I am a big Police fan, and thought it was a really good performance, but am curious if i was just overwhelmed by fanboy glee.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Here's the obligatory YouTube link. Catch it now before it gets taken down

ratbastid 02-12-2007 07:45 AM

I can't believe I missed that!

Well, it'll be on YouTube soon enough, I suppose. What did they play?

hagatha 02-12-2007 07:45 AM

The only reason I bothered to watch the Grammys was to see them open. It was awesome. Despite the fact its been 20 years, they looked pretty much the same and I like the way Sting worked his new jazzy sound into Roxanne.
Rumour has it that they are contemplating getting back together.
When I saw them in '84, at one of their Police Picnics, I thought it was one of the best shows I'd ever seen. If they tour again, I so want to be there.

balderdash111 02-12-2007 07:49 AM

They played "Roxanne" fittingly enough. Of course, I would have loved to have heard one of their less known tracks, but that's just the fanboy talking.

Yes, they are getting back together in the sense of having a tour. Dates expected to be announced today during/after a gig in a very small venue called the Whiskey in LA.

Cynthetiq 02-12-2007 08:26 AM

I had a friend tell me that they were on, and I was like, "Meh, I can't be bothered to get up and turn on the TV."

I guess this is Hell Freezes Over 2 Tour, maybe even managed by the same people that brought us the Eagles.

maleficent 02-12-2007 08:32 AM

I saw something in te local paper the other day that they are possibly gooig to appear at Wrigley Field...

I loved the Police when I was in high school - but Sting has gotten way to new-agey-freaky over the years - it doesnt seem to be the same band.. the grammys were on last night? Not sure i'd even know any nominated acts.

God of Thunder 02-12-2007 12:45 PM

The Police was the first concert I ever went to.

I thought last night's performance was great and they seemed to be getting along.

A tour is being hinted at and if so I am there. They sounded great in '83 and they sounded just as good last night.

I had been hearing talk of a reunion for a couple of weeks, but didn't want to believe it until I actually saw it happen.

MexicanOnABike 02-12-2007 12:55 PM

meh... it was ok but i was hoping for a more "album" sound to the song. but i guess i can't expect that after a bunch of years apart. it would be cool if they started a tour and came out with a new album?!

ps: "the office"'s version was better. haha

CyCo PL 02-12-2007 01:15 PM

roxanne is SUCH a good song, every time I hear it on the radio in my car I have to sing along

Charlatan 02-12-2007 02:28 PM

Wow, that sounded like it would have sounded back when they were touring. I don't think they brought anything new to it. Sure it's not the album sound, but after years of only hearing Sting perform this solo it sure was nice to hear Andy Summer's Guitar and Stewart Copeland's drums backing him again.

In other word's, I am glad they didn't bring anything new to it.

I really torn though. As much as I wish there more Police albums I am nervous that if they record another album it will suck. Nostalgia is one thing, nostalgia warmed over and served on a plate is just foul.

IF they go on tour and IF they come anywhere near Singapore (Hong Kong, KL, Bangkok, Tokyo, Perth, etc.), I will be there. I saw them at a Police Picnic way back in time and it was awesome. They put on a great live show.

My name is Charlatan, and I am a fan of the Police.

Val_1 02-12-2007 08:31 PM

I love the Police. I watched just to see them. It was the most rehearsed I've heard them sounding (individually they are all great musicians, but their live performances have been notoriously sloppy). I enjoyed the altered Roxanne and it looks like they were generally having fun (especially Stewart). I would have liked a longer performance, possibly a medley. But, we'll save that for their summer tour! I like Sting's solo stuff, but I think Andy is the best guitarist for Sting.

fresnelly 02-12-2007 08:37 PM

Hey I love the Police too, but I'm surprised by the vast amount of press this performance generated. Bring back John Bonham from the dead, and then maybe I'll watch the Grammy's.

TV journalists are always going on about the dominance of the youth market, but hullabaloo like this proves to me that it's the Baby Boomers who are really in the economic driver's seat.

cyrnel 02-12-2007 10:30 PM

I would have watched the show had I known they were playing.

Aye, he works with some great musicians but I never quite got into his lone-personality stuff. For me the success of their sound was as much about Copeland's drums as Sting's vocals. Not to slight Summers, that's just where my ears went.

I'll certainly make one of their shows if they hit Oregon.

Fly 02-13-2007 03:52 AM

they rehearsed here all last week..........and i just heard....they're goin' on a tour and it starts here in Vancouver..........may 28th if i'm not mistaken.

i'm so fucking there.

Charlatan 02-13-2007 05:38 AM

They had their last concert in Vancouver and they are going to start there again? That's kinda cool.

I just read that the tour is confirmed. Now I am just waiting to see if they make it Singapore. So far it looks like Japan and Australia are the closest they are coming. If I have to fly to Japan I'm going to be pissed (well, sort of).

ratbastid 02-13-2007 10:22 AM

I'll have to go to Boston or New York, that's as close to me as they're coming. But I'll definitely see if I can work it out.

balderdash111 02-13-2007 11:31 AM

Guarantee that tickets will sell out quickly and that secondary market will be VERY expensive (I am already seeing sites charging $2,500 for floor seats at MSG in NYC)

absorbentishe 02-14-2007 10:30 AM

I saw it on youtoube, and thought it was really good. I'm not the biggest fan, but always really liked their music. I also heard they made a pact to only play Police songs, nothing from the solo careers. So far, the "tour" isn't coming close enough to Toledo to go see, plus tickets are waaaaaaaaaaay too high.

TonySpilotro 02-17-2007 04:00 AM

Copeland was a madman on the drums, great performance all around...I had the sound cranked up on the stereo and the HD picture was nice. I was a bit bummed thay played Roxanne but it was still great...hope that Wrigley Field things pans out...

Lizra 02-17-2007 06:16 AM

Do do do, da da da bugged me more than Roxanne  .....my fave song of theirs is Canary in a Coal Mine, nice uptempo beat.
I always giggle when I think of that overly artsy fartsy video (which song?) they made with the all the blowing fabrics and flying figures.....

TMI about sting/trudy and tantric sex though.......

ratbastid 02-17-2007 07:24 AM

I might go see them at Bonaroo!

Willravel 02-17-2007 08:27 AM

Sting had trouble with the high notes, but the man is like 55. I'm impressed with all of them. While I'll admit the Police were before my time, I do enjoy their music and I'd love for them to start putting out albums again. No more "Greatest Hits", time for something new.

Astrocloud 02-18-2007 10:02 PM

I have message in a box and two live albums. They have such a rich collection and a broad sound that I truly doubt that they'll be able to properly present a "little of everything" for what would probably be their last tour.

If anyone likes interesting versions of songs -you might want to check out Sting's "Murder by Numbers" on Frank Zappa's "Broadway the Hardway".

That is a really good and fun version of the song. Love it.

God of Thunder 03-03-2007 07:55 AM

I got my tickets this morning!!!!!!

They play the Place of Auburn Hills July 17. If anyone else is going to that show, let me know and we'll hook up for a beer or two

biznatch 03-13-2007 10:51 AM

The only thing I kind of missed is Sting's ability to hit higher notes when he sings "turn on the red light" repeatedly. Steward was great though.

Val_1 03-13-2007 05:49 PM

I just saw the Who a couple of months ago. Now I have to decide if I'm gonna shell out another couple of hundred to see the Police. Grrrrr. Tickets are so high priced.

Val_1 04-05-2007 03:51 PM

This had better not just be a tease! A new album!

Police's guitarist Andy Summers has hinted that the band may get to work on a new album after their forthcoming world tour.

The star, who attended a book signing and Q&A session for his memoirs One Train Later in London yesterday (April 4), said the reformed three-piece would consider making a new album after their world tour.

He added: "If we do well with these concerts we may well make a sixth album. I can't see why not."

The guitarist also revealed that the trio will be debuting some new material at their forthcoming tour, which kicks off in Vancouver on May 28 before heading to Europe in August.

"We've been jamming acoustically lately and we've been really enjoying it," said Summers. "We'll be playing a couple of new songs at the shows in the summer."
