Phil Collins - Maybe I will come around to him again
Just saw an episode of the series "Classic Albums" on VH1 classic (good series, BTW, if you care about "making of" stuff) on the Phil Collins album "Face Value" (the one with "In the air tonight" on it).
I was impressed. Haven't listened to the album in years (never bothered to upgrade to CD from my old vinyl version), but there's some really good stuff on there. So here is my question - Phil Collins is much maligned these days, but am I wrong in saying that he really has put out some great music? Here's a particular blast from the past for me. Ignore the video, but it's about 2 minutes of a song called "Droned" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZxqW0smyro

I like Phil. Yes, he's been a bit too commercial over the last 10 years, but he is a very talented guy and his studio stuff is quite excellent. I saw him in concert with Phillip Bailey about 12 years ago in Dallas and it was a great concert. Evceryone was on their feet dancing by the end of the show - no easy feat for that crowd!! I think he had big shoes to fill with Genesis when Peter Gabriel left. And in truth, I love much of Peter's work, too. Go seek some of his old stuff and enjoy. He's a musicians musician. I know from experience. Remember "Trick of the Tail"? Got me through those weird gnarly and wild late 70s and set several sychno beat tones in stride musically for world/beat internationally. When I party in Denmark, I always take Phil's stuff along and everyone loves to dance and enjoy the vibe.

Face Value was a great album. I also think that Duke and Abacab were great Genesis albums as well.
It is easy to malign the guy... he's slid very comfortably into middle of the road but that's what happens when you get older. Try telling me that the Rolling Stones new albums aren't doing the same thing? How long has it been since they've done something relevant?

i dunno, maybe i'm a little older that charlatan and hunnychile, but i was a big gensis head in high school, up through the lamb lies down on broadway (so through the peter gabriel period) and i really like collin's drumming and his singing when he was in a more limited role as singer. i liked each post-gabriel album less than the one before it, until i just gave up on genesis altogether--i think they lost both a great singer and a great drummer when phil shifted into being primarily the vocalist. as for his solo stuff, as a singer and arranger he is a great drummer.

Seems I may be the baby of the group but I always did adore Genesis and Phil.

I think I have you beat in the young person category by 9 years Lady Sage :P
I quite enjoy any album of Genesis from Trespass to Abacab, even though that one is a little too poppy and electronic and very un-Genesis compared to their earlier stuff... I really don't like Lamb at all... I quite after the 2nd song... I've never had a chance to listen to any of his solo albums in their entirety, just singles from a few, No Jacket Required and Face Value. Other than that, I definitely think he declined as a drummer when he became the leader of Genesis, but the group was still pretty damn good. And Trick of the Tail easily ranks up with Selling England by the Pound. But screw his new stuff... Seriously.

the only reason i mentioned the age thing is that i cant really tell if my reaction to collins first as singer rather than drummer and then as solo artist are conditioned by my high school obsession wtih genesis or not.
as far as genesis goes, i'd say the lamb is my favorite (i used to know the lyrics to the whole thing--and i still remember most of them--but only when i hear the record, which is not often as i dont own it and am not terribly interested in having it around); nursery cryme and foxtrot; selling england by the pound, the live record with "watcher of the skies" on it; the old famous charisma compilation with a very odd single on it i cant remember any more; selling england by the pound (tho i admit to a weakness for the title song, and am probably wrong about where i should put this, but no matter)--and then the trick of the tale and the one after that. then i stopped. i saw peter gabriel quite a few times live--first solo tuor through "so" which i didnt really like and the show for which was the least interesting of all of them. probably my fave was the tour for the third record--great visuals, great show. but he doesnt really interest me any more, and i do not have much in the way of nostalgia reflexes.

Phil has done some pretty good stuff through the years. Face Value is one of them. I don't care much for his later overly commercial stuff, but that's no reason to disregard the brilliant work he has done. I'm rather excited about the Genesis reunion concert and just might check it out when they come through next year.

Mick and Keith can burn in that commercialized Hell with Gene Simmons, Paul McCartney and a few others. As for the topic, Phil Collins and Genesis were great, they helped shape the 80's for me. Their music and lyrics are damned good. Not Ray Davies/KINKS good but up there.

Genesis, was an important part of my teenage years, selling england by the pound, was my favorite genesis album and Phil's No jackets required was my favorite solo album!
