Number one Funeral Song
So according to a poll in Britain, the number one pop song requested now for funerals is Bette Middler's Wind Beneath my Wings. So I was thinking, what song would you request to be played at your funeral?
I have always wanted The Ramones, I Don't Wanna be Buried in a Pet Cemetary. |
Slaughters Fly to the Angels during the funeral service and Amazing Grace on bagpipes at the graveside
|
Days By the KINKS
|
Go Rest High On That Mountain by Vince Gill.

That's good, I just might steal that one...Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes gives me chills.... |
My dad claims to have gone to a funeral where the music used as the coffin was winched down to the crematorium was "The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown" performing "Fire".
I want that at mine... :D |
"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Bing Crosby, hands down. When I die, I want people to celebrate my life not mourn my death. Or maybe the theme song to Battlestar Galactica.
|
I agree with will.
When I die, I'm throwing a huge party. Why not? Celebrate a good life. As for the song, probably something upbeat, and enthusiastic; definately "Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year", Andy Williams. Followed by some latin/brazillian jazz. |
When Dave dies Im going to have the Imperial March from Star Wars piped as they carry him to the grave...he walked down the aisle at our wedding to that

The funeral march from Starwars would be another good one. |

yep....Dave and his best man are SW nuts and they had joked all along they wanted to walk down to that on pipes...I pushed it aside cause I didnt figure it was possible, and if it WAS possible, it had to sound awful right? lol
The night before the wedding at the rehearsal they were joking around with the piper that thats what they had wanted and he told them his son knew how to play it on the pipes and he would go home and learn it for the next day....and he did...it was a tad fast, but didnt sound anywhere near as bad as I thought it would lol Ratbastid was there lol he can testify to it  |
did you make a recording of the wedding shani? like a video one--if you did and it's digital, maybe you could bite the audio track of the march and post it somewhere?
please? and being recently of philadelphia, here is a plug for the good mister rufus harley (r.i.p.) the finest and only (who can say?) jazz bagpipe player: http://www.hipwax.com/music/patch/horns_rh.html luckily my pal kenny does a show at wfmu and he provides a sample, hidden amongst several other fine treats.... http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/11537 damn it, i almost forgot. funerals. what i want played at mine. several sine waves very close in pitch to one another playing at a very high volume for a very long time so that they start making all kinds of notes that may or may not really be there. or woolly bully. that's by sam the sham and the pharoahs. which is a great name. they were kinda dashing, in a fucked up sort of way: http://www.robert-kruse.com/samudio/intro.html and so am i. i mean this, which was about sam the sham et al: Quote:

I don't really have a reason for mine, but ever since I've heard it I've always though of Moby's remix of Bittersweet Symphony as an excellent funeral song. Perhaps it's just me?
|
I told my family if they have a funeral, I'm going to haunt them forever.
I attend a lot of funerals for my job and it sucks. The most popular song for a kid is "His Eyes Is On the Sparrow." I can't even hear it now without tearing up. I want Jerry Garcia's spin on "So What". And a long, loud party with lots of Self, G. Love and Special Sauce, Gorillaz... and "Enter, Sandman" at least once to remind them I'm coming back if they don't watch it. :D |

All I care about my funeral is that it has an open bar.

pearl jam- All those yesterdays
Iknow I didnt do this right, but.... <a href=""><img src="<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oqg9rtKc-A0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oqg9rtKc-A0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>"></a> Don't you think you oughtta rest? Don't you think you oughtta lay you head down? Don't you think you want to sleep? Don't you think you oughtta lay your head down Tonight? Don't you think you've done enough? Oh, don't you think you've got enough? well maybe... You don't think there's time to stop There's time enough for you to lay your head down, Tonight, tonight Let it wash away All those yesterdays What are you running from? Taking pills to get along Creating walls to call your own So no one catches you? Drifting off and doing all the things... That we... all do Let them wash away All those yesterdays All those yesterdays All those paper plates All those yesterdays You've got time... you've got time to escape There's still time... it's no crime to escape It's no crime to escape... it's no crime to escape There's still time, so escape It's no crime, crime.. |
From my youth, after attending my first funeral at four (great-grandmother) I decreed I wanted good music. They played Southern Baptist organ favourites.
I have always been attached to The End by the Doors, even if it is a bit trite. Otherwise, much abounding techno beats and Metal to keep the smiles upon the faces of all. I used to sing a particular arrangment of Amazing Grace in church that was quite lovely. If I could find it again, I'd have that tossed in to be nicely traditional. |

My funeral is already spelled out, and secured away in the safe. It's sort of a combination of traditional police and military pomp and circumstance. Two pipers, one playing Amazing Grace as I'm unloaded from the hearse by military honor guard and carried gravesite, with the second joining in for a single refrain as I'm being set down. Following the "duet", the honor guard executes the appropriate facing movements, and marches away to the refrain of the single piper. Quote:
Not "Star Wars", I know, but unconventional nonetheless. |
Somehow John Mellencamp's Human Wheels seems to fit, maybe just the reprise.
But for sure the Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow must be played. It morphs into What a Beautiful World Sample here |
i seriously doubt anyone would even notice i was dead... so a funeral would be pointless :D
though i do like It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday by boyz II men |

I hope you're joking. |
What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
|
Green Day "Time of Your Life"
|
Loch Lomond, but it has to be the upbeat version by Runrig.
Probably "Georgia on My Mind" as well. Ray Charles, naturally. |
"Eleanore Rigby" by the Beatles will definitely be one of the songs played at my funeral.
In fact, I've been working on my will this week... |
Another One Bites the Dust

I haven't given much thought to this--I'm in the "I'll be dead, what do I care?" school. lurkette or whoever else survives me should play music they want to hear. My plan is to give so much of myself while I'm still alive that I don't need to leave anyone with a last musical message from beyond the grave, my life will speak for itself. |
I will have Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird played at my funeral. That's my only real request.
|
don't know how I ended up thinking of two McCartney tunes, but how about:
1) Live and Let Die or 2) Mull of Kintyre But then I thought of Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle. Or Terry Jack's Seasons in the Sun (for home-town talent). Make 'em weep I say! |
Well this isn't a pop song but I'd choose Mozart's Requiem. If you wanted to be a tough guy you could always choose Megadeth's "into the lungs of hell".
|
"Gotterdammerung - Funeral March" - composed by Richard Wagner
|
"It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" by Boyz II Men. Not usually a fan of theirs, but it was used in a funeral scene in one of the Lethal Weapon movies and really worked well.
-Mikey |
1812 Overture. Cannons and everything.
|
"Satisfied Mind" by Jeff Buckley. I don't know who wrote it originally, but his cover is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
|
amazing grace -- right where I live
|
Sarah McLachlan's In the Arms of An Angel was played at my grandmother's funeral. That song can almost bring a tear to your eye when listening to it on the radio so it was very hard to keep it together.

Although...I was thinking more along the lines of Handel's Hellelujah Chorus, for you. :suave: No? |
