If the song title is not a person's name...
This will probably be one of those things that everybody else can think of a million examples while I can't think of any.
This morning, while listening to Anna Nalick's "Breathe," I mis-heard part of the lyrics that sounded like she addressed someone in the song as "Chris." And it got me to thinking that if a person's name is in the song, then that is usually the song title. Or, to put it another way, if the song title is not a person's name, then you won't find ANYBODY'S name anywhere in the lyrics. Can anybody think of any exceptions? |
"88 Lines About 44 Women" comes to mind ...

"88 Lines about 44 Simpsons" is a great version as well, but doesn't match the request of the original poster. I'll think some and come back later with a more useful response. |
Itunes just played another song that I think fits the category...

Of course, every suggestion so far contains more than one named character, which might be spoiling the sample. Can anyone find a song that only mentions one character by name without including it in the title?

I can think of a couple of country songs.
John Deere Green by Joe Diffie Quote:
Though I do have a more fitting example: "Anything but Mine" by Kenny Chesney Quote:
Sorry for all the country, but I mean it works, seems like the particular genre produces many songs that qualify. |
"Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell" (Reached No. 14 in 1964)
It was a teenage wedding, and the old folks wished them well You could see that Pierre did truly love the madamoiselle "5Th Dimension - Wedding Bell Blues" (Reached No. 1 in 1969) Bill, I love you so, I always will I look at you and see the passion eyes of May "Donovan - Mellow Yellow" (Reached No. 2 in 1966) I'm just mad about Saffron Saffron's mad about me "Leslie Gore - It's My Party" (Reached No. 1 in 1963) Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone Judy left the same time "Todd Rundgren - We Gotta Get You A Woman" (Reached No. 20 in 1971) Leroy, boy, is that you? I thought your post-hangin' days were through, "Steve Miller Band - Take The Money And Run" (Reached No.11 in 1976) This here's a story about Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue Two young lovers with nothin' better to do "Bertie Higgins - Key Largo" (Reached No. 8 in 1981) We had it all Just like Bogie and Bacall "Marty Robbins - El Paso" (Reached No. 1 in 1960) Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl. The Chili Peppers did the Dani saga. By the Way is the only tune I can think of that mentions her by name and isn't named after her, though.
For those not in the know, Dani is a character created by Anthony Kiedis and mentioned in three songs. She first shows up in Californication as a "teenage bride with a baby inside", but isn't mentioned by name. Then in By the Way which is about her (she's mentioned in the chorus as singing songs to Kiedis "beneath the marquee"). Finally, Dani California tells the story of her death. |
A lot of the songs from Dream Theater's "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory" mention Victoria by name but none of them are named after her
e.g. Fatal Tragedy "Victoria's gone forever, only memories remain". |
Fuck her gently - Tenacious D
This is a song for the ladies But fellas listen closely You don't always have to fuck her hard In fact sometimes that's not right to do Sometimes you've got to make some love And fuckin give her some smoochies too Sometimes ya got to squeeze Sometimes you've got to say please Sometime you've got to say hey I'm gonna Fuck you softly I'm gonna screw you gently I'm gonna hump you sweetly I'm gonna ball you discreetly And then you say hey I bought you flowers And then you say wait a minute sally I think I got somethin in my teeth Could you get it out for me That's fuckin teamwork Whats your favorite posish? Kate Monster: Between me and you, I think Both: Everyone's a little bit racist Sometimes. Doesn't mean we go Around committing hate crimes. Look around and you will find No one's really color blind. Maybe it's a fact We all should face Everyone makes judgments Based on race. Princeton: Now not big judgments, like who to hire or who to buy a newspaper from - Kate Monster: No! Princeton: No, just little judgments like thinking that Mexican busboys should learn to speak goddamn English! Kate Monster: Right! Both: Everyone's a little bit racist Today. So, everyone's a little bit racist Okay! Ethinic jokes might be uncouth, But you laugh because They're based on truth. Don't take them as Personal attacks. Everyone enjoys them - So relax! Princeton: All right, stop me if you've heard this one. Kate Monster: Okay! Princeton: There's a plan going down and there's only one paracute. And there's a rabbi, a priest... Kate Monster: And a black guy! Gary Coleman: Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Kate? Kate Monster: Uh... Gary Coleman: You were telling a black joke! Princeton: Well, sure, Gary, but lots of people tell black jokes. Gary Coleman: I don't. Princeton: Well, of course you don't - you're black! But I bet you tell Polack jokes, right? I got a good one:
"Annie are you okay, won't you tell us, that you're okay? There's a sign in the window, that he struck you, a crescendo Annie..." (Smooth Criminal) |
Bad Company- "Shooting Star"
Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatle song, 'Love me do,' I think it was. From there it didn't take him long. Got himself a guitar, used to play every night, Now he's in a rock 'n' roll outfit, And everything's all right, don't you know? Johnny told his mama, hey, 'Mama, I'm goin' away. I'm gonna hit the big time, gonna be a big star someday', Yeah. Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eye. Johnny said, 'Don't cry, mama, smile and wave good-bye'. Don't you know, yeah yeah, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you know, don't you know. Don't you know that you are a shooting star, And all the world will love you just as long, As long as you are. Johnny made a record, Went straight up to number one, Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song. Watching the world go by, surprising it goes so fast. Johnny looked around him and said, 'Well, I made the big time at last'. Don't you know, don't you know, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you know, oh, yeah, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, yeah, And all the world will love you just as long, As long as you are, a shooting star. Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you know, yeah, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, now, And all the world will love you just as long, As long you are you. Johnny died one night, died in his bed, Bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets by his head. Johnny's life passed him by like a warm summer day, If you listen to the wind you can still hear him play Oh oh oh, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you know, yeah, don't you know', Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you know, yeah, Don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you, don't you, don't you, don't you, Don't you know, don't you know, oh, yeah, you are, Yeah, a shooting star, yeah, oh oh oh oh oh...... Don't you, don't you know that you are a shooting star, Don't you don't you know...... Or Brian Adams- "Summer of 69" I got my first real six-string Bought it at the five-and-dime Played it till my fingers bled It was the summer of 69 Me and some guys from school Had a band and we tried real hard Jimmy quit and Jody got married I shoulda known wed never get far Oh when I look back now That summer seemed to last forever And if I had the choice Ya - Id always wanna be there Those were the best days of my life Aint no use in complainin When you got a job to do Spent my evenings down at the drive-in And thats when I met you Standin on your mamas porch You told me that youd wait forever Oh and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life Back in the summer of 69 Man we were killin time We were young and restless We needed to unwind I guess nothin can last forever - forever, no And now the times are changin Look at everything thats come and gone Sometimes when I play that old six-string I think about ya wonder what went wrong Standin on your mamas porch You told me it would last forever Oh the way you held my hand I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life Back in the summer of 69 |
I can't think of many songs about a dislike/hate/desire to kill someone named after them though.

Billy Joel does this all the time:
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant: Brenda and eddie were the popular steadies And the king and the queen of the prom Riding around with the car top down and the radio on Nobody looked any finer Or was more of a hit at the parkway diner We never knew we could want more than that out of life Surely brenda and eddie would always know how to survive. Movin' Out* Anthony works in the grocery store Savin' his pennies for someday Mama Leone left a note on the door, She said, "Sonny, move out to the country." Workin' too hard can give you A heart attackackackackackack You oughta know by now Who needs a house out in Hackensack? Is that all you get for your money? It seems such a waste of time If that's what it's all about Mama, If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out. Mmm, I'm movin' out. Ooh-hoo, uh-huh, mmmm Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat At night he becomes a bartender He works at Mister Cacciatore's down On Sullivan Street Across from the medical center Yeah and he's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillacacacacacacacac You oughta know by now And if he can't drive With a broken back At least he can polish the fenders Only the Good Die Young Come out virginia, dont let me wait You catholic girls start much too late Aw but sooner or later it comes down to fate I might as well be the one Gilda *The subtitle was added later on because that's what people were calling it instead of the actual title. It made it easier to find. This was a common practice in the album/single era. |
I've been racking my brain trying to go the other direction - finding a song with a person's name in the title but no mention of the person in the song and the only one I can come up with so far is a song from an obscure indie group named Beulah - the song is called "Emma Blowgun's Last Stand." Nowhere in the song is Emma mentioned by name.
