Which type of car do you prefer?

We have three major competing markets of cars (in the US):

1.) Import Japan

2.) Domestic

3.) Import Europe

personally i prefer the import japan over all. What about you?

Dougie 06-03-2003 03:39 PM

Keep The fuckin Jap scrap. its all garbage.

Euro cars are good... WHen theyre New... put 3-4 years on em and on a quiet night around here you can hear the audis, jags, and bimmers rust....

Domestics.

FastShark85 06-03-2003 04:37 PM

Euro cars rust in 3-4 years?

Mine's a "bit" older than that....

WarWagon 06-03-2003 05:29 PM

Domestics. They're my love affair.

Dougie 06-03-2003 06:08 PM

every damn one ive seen turns to dust within a decade...

Tech 06-03-2003 06:18 PM

i love domestics, but if i was truely LOADED (6 figures) i would lean heavily on euro (mercedes, ferrari, etc)

FastShark85 06-03-2003 06:22 PM

Well, whether a car rusts out depends in large part on whether it's cared for. Most Buick owners don't give a damn about their car, especially if they bought it used. When someone dumps a boatload of cash into buying a new BMW, they tend to wash it once in a while.

You don't see 1965 Mustangs out there that look in showroom condition because their owners abused them.

That Honda Civic is going to rust, too, but its clutch will probably last longer than the one in a Saturn.

For years, US carmakers intentionally made cars that would wear out and need replacing. It was their way of making sure people would keep buying cars. Then the Japanese came along and made dependable cars. Now US automakers are putting out cars that last a bit longer, but the perception that they're crap still lingers in the minds of folks who switched to Jap cars in the '80s.

My 928 is 18 years old and still has almost every one of its original parts, except for shocks, tires, lightbulbs, etc. The engine and body is aluminum, and neither are showing any signs of rust. Show me an '85 Ford Crown Victoria that's still on the road, and I'll show you an American car that is probably more rust than metal.

Yes, I would have to agree with FastShark85. I would choose jap for reliability and budget performance, euro for build quality and styling (although I believe Jap cars are quickly catching up in the styling war), and US Domestic as a last resort.

Atomic Pinkie 06-04-2003 01:49 AM

hell yeah fast, thats the car my dad has...its staying in the family...

Is your's an auto or a manual?

FastShark85 06-04-2003 05:27 AM

It's an auto modded to over 340hp. The auto trans allows for a "tiptronic" sort of shifting, so I can get and hold each gear on demand.

What year is your dad's?

clonmult 06-04-2003 05:48 AM

A mates boss had a 928 many years back. Had the radiotor get blown in the middle of nowhere in scotland.

Found a local garage that managed to "put together" a replacement radiator. It lasted for the journey home, at which point the engine decided that it had enough of the hack job that the garage had done and died.

It is the most under-rated car Porsche have ever made, and for me at least, one of the best looking, shapeliest cars ever to grace the road. And the engine note is absolutely perfect.

That's a bit harsh, Dougie. I've had a Toyota pickup for three years, and it's been very dependable. I bought it new and treated it right. In fact, in the pickup world, Toyota trucks have some of the highest resale values in the market

BoCo 06-04-2003 06:16 AM

My favorite are Euro imports, but I can't afford them so I'll stick with my Japanese import. 114,000 miles and no trouble so far. :)

Dougie 06-04-2003 06:23 AM

The trucks arent as bad... i was more or less slamming the cars.

FastShark85 06-04-2003 07:10 AM

Here's a good clip of a 928's exhaust note:

928 start engine rev

Spyder_Venom 06-04-2003 07:44 AM

it all depends on what I am doing with the car...

Daily Driver - Domestic or Jap
Truck - Domestic
Sports Car (on a budget) - Domestic
Sports Car (unlimited budget) - Euro
Drag Car - Domestic

thadon 06-04-2003 12:04 PM

sedan
German

how about the BMW M5

keep an eye out for the new M5 which is supposed to be a street version of the race v10 putting out 500hp ... no that is SWEET

FastShark85 06-04-2003 12:36 PM

The M5 is a great car, and better be for $75K!

ARRH 06-04-2003 09:12 PM

European, and only European!

SilverFox 06-04-2003 09:25 PM

European, without a doubt. I've driven GM cars all my life because my father was a dealer. When he retired I bought a VW Jetta. There is no way I would ever go back to a domestic car.

Zac2003 06-04-2003 10:32 PM

domestic all the way :)

Vaultboy 06-05-2003 03:52 AM

NISSAN. There's nothing you can rely on more, except death and taxes.

hughjarse 06-05-2003 04:05 AM

American Muscle. All the young wankers in Oz are running round in rice burners and the rich kids have eurotrash Bimmers and such.

FastShark85 06-05-2003 08:32 AM

Had a Nissan Maxima.....great car. Decided to get a Nissan Pathfinder. That thing was such a piece of $hit that I'll never go back to Nissan, although I'm seriously tempted to try a 350Z.

There's a big difference between the people that buy new European cars and those that buy them used. The new car owners don't know a damn thing about what's under the hood and are generally the type that want to race on the highways....true morons. The crowd that I'm familiar with (i.e., the "used" car crowd) do their own mechanic work and can appreciate a well-cared for car, domestic, Euro or Japanese.

If a car has been on the road for 10 or more years, and still runs well and is rust-free, I'd say it's a good car no matter where it came from.

LutherMac 06-05-2003 08:40 AM

Domestics... and more specifically, GM all the way! :)

Magpie0001 06-05-2003 08:58 AM

Firstly, I dont know a whole lot about cars, but...

I was told that Manual is better than automatic & most (not all) american cars are auto's.
American cars are designed to go straight, long, smooth, youz guys have lots of freeways, american cars are generally heavier & bigger.
Euro's are designed to take the curves, suspension, handling etc, etc.. Weve got alot more curvy uppy-downy roads.

Rusting - Doesnt that have to do with humidity N' shit like that??

zf0enix 06-05-2003 10:46 AM

I have a Japanese car for commuting and a domestic P-U for fun.

focalevo 06-05-2003 01:13 PM

Preference of mine is the european cars. Reality though,(due to budget), is a fine sample of domestic rice. That being a Focus sedan. It's been a lot of fun, even though it cuts off at 105mph, and takes FOREVER to get there!!

If the world were perfect, than give me some exotic from far away,(or a Saleen S7 from here), and let me go and have some fun. :)

brandon11983 06-06-2003 07:17 AM

I'm a fan of European cars. Seeing my US car torn apart when it was in for some extensive car audio work, I realized just how cheaply they are built. I'd love to have a V-Dub for my next ride.

VirFighter 06-06-2003 05:38 PM

When it comes down to it I don't care who built the car as long as I like it. I've owned all three types. I've had a firebird, a miata, and a vw. I like them all in different ways.

The things I like are rwd, lightweight, good power. I make compromises here and there but in general if you meet my requirements for a good car then I don't care where it was built.

MSD 06-06-2003 07:47 PM

They all have thier benefits and disadvantages. I tend to lean toward domestics, but not exclusively. I appreciate all cars for what they are, regardless of where the company that makes them is based.

madsenj37 06-06-2003 08:19 PM

I would drive most european cars as my personal car, but no where near as many Domestic cars. You gotta love vipers and corvettes though.

m0j0 06-07-2003 03:41 AM

Import Europe

debaser 06-07-2003 01:30 PM

3 (Older water cooled VWs specifically) :D

duckduck 06-12-2003 07:54 PM

Cars?

Trucks (domestic) for me, thanks!

big_bubba 06-14-2003 10:40 PM

Domestic.

Jap reliable? Let's see a 2001 Tacoma with 750,000 miles. Then I'll shut up.

Casdin 06-14-2003 11:41 PM

I love my wrangler! Forget the japanese imports! :P

0001 06-15-2003 01:12 PM

A woman local here just traded her 1981 Toyota Corrolla back to a dealership in exchange for a brand new one. Straight up trade. They wanted the car before it clicked over to the 1 million kilometer mark. Everything on the car was original except for the usual stuff (shocks, brakes, that type of thing).

I don't know how anyone can say Japanese cars are garbage. Maybe not their thing, but garbage? The mind boggles.

That being said, if we are talking NEW, domestic I'd take a Z06 (Or C5R :D), and thats about it. Import Japanese, there are a LOT more I'd go for. 350Z, NSX Type S Zero, RX-8, the list goes ON AND ON. Import Euro is where it gets really insane of course; Lambo, Zonda, etc. Personally I don't like the Enzo, looks fugly for a supercar to me. Then again, the Zonda's kinda tweaked too.

Above all for a realistic dream car, I can't really choose; I have too many dreams :D

Another vote for me...176,000 miles on my GMC truck, and it'll probably see 200,000 more. Gotta love 'em.

cjjeep21 06-17-2003 09:29 AM

I'm a domestic kind of guy. I'll take my old Jeep anyday over a import.
