2007 Evo X

Quote:
These are the first pictures of the car that is likely to have Tokyo motor showgoers flocking to the Mitsubishi stand next month: Tagged ‘Concept-X’, the muscular new four-door previews 2007’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, the latest addition to the triple diamond marque’s rally-bred road car dynasty.

Insiders confirm that the concept is ‘very close’ to the production car, which goes on sale soon after standard versions of the new Ford Focus rival Lancer mid-way through 2007. The styling follows that of the five-door Concept Sportback, unveiled at last month’s Frankfurt show, but designers have added a touch of extra aggression for the Evolution version with its extra Naca bonnet duct, deeper front spoiler, pronounced rear diffuser and high WRC-style rear wing.

Expect a big step forward in cabin quality over the current car’s plasticky affair, though Mitsubishi is at pains to stress that the Evo will not be moving up a class to take on the BMW M3 and Audi S4.

Power is likely to come from the familiar formula of a turbocharger mated to a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing at least 300bhp, now breathing through beefy twin tailpipes exiting either side of the diffuser in place of the current car’s single big-bore item. But for the Evo X that power will be provided by an all-new unit as the ageing 4G 63 block is finally retired, having provided motivation for quick Lancers since the Evo I of 1992.

The new engine’s punch will be fed to all four wheels, true to Evo tradition, using an updated version of Mitsubishi’s sophisticated four-wheel drive system, incorporating an active centre differential and active yaw control.

Meh. I'm a big Evo fan, but I don't know how much I like the looks of that grille... ah well, it's still an Evo

They stole that front end grille right from Audi, and the rest of the car is awesome too.
Very aggressive exterior, stands like a Bulldog -- can't figure out what the heck is going on on the inside.

kinda gross front end, i agree on the grille... but still looks nice overall, at least it's still a "concept" so they have time to tweak it a little! (unlike the ugly WRX grille we are stuck with)

The outside body looks tight except for the front. I love the front lights, makes it look meaner.

Holy moly....that is friggin' awesome.

I can't believe this company is almost bankrupt. I think they should streamline their whole line and just stick with what works...and this works. Well done.

It looks mean, intimidating, and ugly as sin. The headlights are my main complaint, but overall I have seen much uglier cars. And yeah, wtf is with the auto?

It's a good thing that these pictures clearly don't resemble the production version... 'cause this thing is ugly! It looks like a cross between a 5-series BMW and a Toyota Celeca - with two heaping scoops of rice on top.

The auto has got to go. There definitely needs to be a few tweaks for the release model. But it's definitely an excellent start.

front grill, make it matching paint not that ugly grey plastic stuff. lose the chrome gas cap, and not sure what's going on with the inside, the design is ok, but the styling is way off. Way too boxy and bland, feels like it's restrictive not fun and free flowing. Feels like Bad Fung Shway, rather uncomfortable driving it let alone passengers. And ya, Lancers should NEVER and I mean NEVER EVER come in an auto, maybe minimum an auto-stick, but that's pushin it.

Well true about the auto part but not everyone wants to drive around town all day with a standard!

It's not bad, except I don't think it fits the style of the Evo at all. Looks more like their Eclipse than the Evo. A cool car, but it shames the Evolution name. The whole thing is much too sleek and rounded - when I think of the Evolution, I think of really sharp and aggressive lines, wide fender ridges, rectangular spoiler, really well defined bumper lines, ONE vent on the hood - not 10, and definitly not a Viperish vent along the side.

It could be fixed, though. It needs some good side skirts, a more aggressive spoiler, a hood with not as many holes in it, taller headlights and taillights, no side vents, a normal rear bumper without the ridiculous diffuser, and a shorter/less colorful grill region.

Basically when I look at an Evolution, I try to determine if it looks like it would survive as a rally car - this one does not. I was disappointed in the '06 Subaru Impreza, and am even more disappointed in this. So much for rally inspired cars

I agree with that phathom said about the bad Fung-Shway in the interior - I had the same thoughts
