Thoughts on 3000GT's?
This summer I plan on buying a Mitsubishi 3000GT, most likely a 95-96 model. I'm going for an automatic and was wondering if anyone had any experience with these cars or even stories about them? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

SL = so-so, sporty, but not as fast as it looks and plenty of new cars now will hang/beat it. nice FR V-6, but like i said, it's pretty weak. it's only gonna pull 16's in the 1/4
VR-4 = sweet car. AWD, twin turbo, 6-speed. this is the car that people think of when they say "those 3000GTs are pretty quick, eh?" should run high 13s or very low 14s in the 1/4 mile. it's a pretty sweet car, right up there with the rarer Supra Turbo. if i was going to buy one, i would say VR-4 or it's not worth my money. just my $.02.

Bob you can save yourself a ton of cash by picking up a 96 Dodge Stealth R/T. Similar options to the VR-4, all you're missing is a stage 2 turbo for the complete package. Granted at this point you're looking at a difference of 5-8k between a 96 stealth and a 96 vr-4, so it depends on why you're buying the car. If it's the looks, go with the lower end 3kGT, you don't really need all of the HP.

I really like the look of the 3000gt/stealth, the low wide stance looks really cool.
If you are wondering what kind of aftermarket support there is, check out www.extrememotorsports.com , and check out the catalog section.

My best friend owns a '92 Stealth R/T and it has to be on of the most fun and affordable sports car ive driven. Ive taken it around a few times and the handling is what amazes me, because of that low and wide stance you can take a turn at 50 mph without a problem, of course thats with decent tires and a good suspension. But honestly I love the look of them also and from what I understand the Stealth R/T is cheaper most the time, despite the fact that they are the same exact car.

Both of the cars are good, have the same engine only downside is that they are heavy. If all you are looking for is a good car that runs and gives a little kick every now and then... the 3000GT/Stealth is a great way to go. Even the base model is partially good, better than a Honda Civic.

Yep, those cars are heffers. Lots of aftermarket support though, and I always thought the Stealth was, well, more stealthy as far as the sleeper aspect goes. You need a definite turbo upgrade to make any real power though, as I've seen dollar store cooling fans that could probably make more boost than those itty bitty turbos :-)

Heres the deal:
300gt vr-4 = awd burnout 1st, 2nd, and some of third. Super fast car, but only the vr-4 would suffice if i were to get one. I've seen two near my local dealership for around 20k a peice, and its comparible to a twin turbo supra. Either one of this big bodied big boys would be kick ass. I myself am trading in my wrx for a wrx sti ( single turbo awd 300hp, 300tq ) and runs low 13's (13.2-13.4ish ) Get the vr-4, youll love it. |

I owned a 94 3000gt, automatic, for a year and a half. I bought it with 90,000 miles, and the guy ebfore me probably ragged it. My transmission went out at 95,000. I got that rebuilt for 1600. I traded it at 115,000 miles when my exhaust started smoking on take offs from stop. Every estimate I got said it would be between 3 and 5k for engine rebuild.
That said, here's what i liked. 227 horsepower was really fun. Seat felt like a cockpit, steering was a tight. Automatic transmission felt great. rear seats were tiny buckets, so don't plan to put anything back there. stereo wise, I had separtaes in front and 6x9 in the rear. 2 8inch subs in the hatch were very responsive, since the hatch had a tight seal. Mechanically, it's very hard for mechanics to get in the engine... it's quite shoehorned in there. What I've heard about the vr4's is mostly good, but I would be VERY wary of the turbo's wear by the past owner. be very careful, because it sucks when your beautiful ride won't go.

i've only ever ridden in the twinturbo 3000gt (only model they released here) and they are definately a nice quick car. pros would have to be that they are pretty unique around here and offer great sports car looks/speed for the price.
but as other people have said, they are awd, 4 wheel steering and twinturbo, so if it's getting high in the k's you will be looking at some maintenance. |

Quality warning, be very careful as I have heard many horror stories such as 308's. The car wasn't the most sturdy when built and reviews can be found to show that, but then add in that people that bought it often bought it to smoke some tire and you have a real iffy vehicle on your hands. What do you want out of this purchase, a sporty looking car? Something that will go fast? A name? Look around, you can probably find something else that will get you what you want for about the same $$$.

vr-4 all the way or just dont even bother.....just remeber that you are dealing with a turbo charged awd drive car which means ALOT more wear on everything....so fully check out every car before you buy....

well, don't consider anything else then vr-4 then if you already decided to buy a 3000gt. It's a fast car already, but it's very pricy and hard to make it faster... lot of work on it needed. Personally I would buy other car. Considering these which cost more or less same as 3000gt's I would go for supra or 96< m3.

I would never pay money for a mitsubishi, not even the EVO. There quality is sub par compared to similar auto makers.

Reply for : 89Transam......The VR-4 may have been modded, blow off value for sure and possible Greddy turbos and the Vette had an exhaust from the sound of it Borla/Flowmaster so Im sure the Vette had mods also but it still got left, one hell of a race though.

Ok to dispell a few of the myths...
Weight; 3000GT 2nd gen (94-98) ~3900 lbs full tank depending on what options. Mk4 supra ~3600 lbs. Speed; Bone stock 1st Gen 3000GT VR4 mid to high 13's at 100mph with a good driver. 2nd Gen VR4 mid 13's steady with a good driver. Mild modifications will put you in very low 13's high 12's territory on stock turbos. The fastest out there right now run in the mid to high 10's. Reliability; If you find a well taken care of car the reliability should be about the same as and normal sports car. Just make sure to check for the 60k service and T-case recall work. Sticky lash adjusters in these cars cause a ticking noise that is not harmfull but extremely annoying, only fix is replacement of lash adjusters for new style with larger oil holes. Transmission problems are about in these cars just because alot of people beat on them. If you get a clean car that shouldn't be a problem as long as none of the gears grind. The VR4 transmissions are now serviceable since a company named Kormex has started importing and making there own parts for the Getrag AWD transmissions. The TT versions of the Dodge Stealth and Mitsu 3KGT are very fun cars and reasonable for all year use with AWD. The NA versions came is a few variants, needless to say signifigantly slower and with the added disadvantage of a FF platform. They are still very sporty but limited in that respect. I owned a 1992 Stealth ES for 4 years, very fun car. Capable of high 14's at close to 100mph when I was done with it, but very expensive to maintain because I was not careful in picking it. Mine was beat to hell by the previous owner and I'm sure that had alot to do with the mechanical problems I had while I owned it. I now own a 1992 Dodge Stealth RT/TT. Bone stock high 13's, less that 1000$ later low 13's to high 12's. No mechanical problems yet but I did burn up the clutch fairly quickly just from the added power. I've been very happy with it, and even being 11 years old it hangs with most any car you'll see on the road today. Looks better than many of them in my opinion. No suggestions here since I'm obviously biased, but I think you'll like any one you get as long as your carefull to pick a well maintained car. if you get a 3000gt/stealth, you can always contact bee racing in japan, they had a 3000gt or gto as they call it over there running mid 11's with only 3-4 grand worth of mods, not upgraded turbo's and with a full interior even a custom stereo system. the could have ran low 11's or even high 10's but they didn't have a full roll cage
