Gas Mileage
I ran across an article from "Smart Gas" online today that stated adding 3 oz. of straight acetone to 10 gal. of gas would improve gas mileage by 15-35% with no detrimental effects to engine parts. The cost of acetone combined with the potential improved gas mileage would make it more than cost affective. Does anyone have any insight?

It's been tried and reported forever and is absolute nonsense. Those who report mileage increases are driving more carefully. The only way it'll help is if timing is advanced to the extent that a higher octane will delay ignition and improve burn. Even if that's a problem, the percentage of acetone people are suggesting isn't enough to notice.
Desperation is breeding some real gems these days.

Yeah.. I hate to say it, but there aren't really any additives out ther that'll offer a signifigant mileage increase. If you want better mileage, slow down and keep your car in good repair. Follow all scheduled maintenance and take care of problems as they crop up. Aside from that or buying a more efficient car, there's really not a whole lot you can do.

3 oz. will hardly raise the octane.
I used to know a bunch of guys with Turbo Buicks and they would add 3:1 parts gas and xylene to boost 91 to about 98-100 octane. So, obviously, it takes way more than 3 oz. to make a difference. Further, xylene, toloulene, or whatever tends to have much less BTUs that gasoline. So, adding the stuff actually gives you much worse gas mileage. (Plus Xylene and such, is much more expansive per-gallon...or, at least it used to be.) |

Make sure your tires are inflated properly, that can make a huge difference too.
