Ok, now that I've got you looking, I feel the need to blurt out the fact that I am going to drive a brand spanking new BMW M6 from its birthplace in Munich to my home town in Svendborg. I am so insanely excited I don't even have the words to describe it!

The M series is certainly unique. The SMG tansmissions are for lack of a better word, awesome. My friend John has a 2004 M3 and my friend Milad has a 2004 M5. We have a great deal of fun racing them up and down the streets in the city we live in. I of course have a 2006 545i. I can still hang with them quite easily though (read: not all stock).

Anyway, I'm happy for you to drive one of these awesome machines.

That is going to be nice; although I still can't totally like the SMG transmission. There is something about rowing it yourself that the SMG just doesn't have. Now if the new M5 will come out with a 6 speed in America, I'd have to think about replacing (or adding to) my current M5 in a few years when the used ones become a decent price.

I dont quite understand the point of the m6? what does it have that the m5 and m3 do not? Styling is different but I can not think of anything else. All things aside it is quite beautiful.

M6 is a larger, more powerful coupe than the M3.
What exactly does it share with the M5 and M3???

The M6 shares its engine and transmission with the M5, although the carbon fiber roof and generally lower center of gravity of the 6 makes it the better handler of the two. Think of it as a "sportier" M5 without the convenience of back doors.

Heheh, well have it your way.

Between an M3, M5 and M6, I'd take the M6. Classic GTs should be in a 2+2 configuration, not a 4+4 grocery getter. That's why there are no 4-door Ferraris, Porsches (excluding the Cayenne SUV), Aston Martins, etc. The M5 is the oddball in the M-line...but, anyhoo...

I wonder if we're ever going to get pics?!?

Ok, I just got back last night, after travelling 1200km + change in a little under 10 hours. I think the lady that handed over the vehicle at BMW in Munich said it best: " Rippley, zis vehicle ist not ein car, it ist ein weapon!" - truer words were never spoken.

I was limited in my use of the car: No revving above 5500rpm (the car maxes at 8250) and no pushing the M-button (the button that tells the engine software to let the leash off all 507 HP). So I only had 400 HP and 5500 rpm to work with. Despite this, I was cruising for extended periods of time, at 240 KPH... The car is insane. The way it pulls, even from 2000 rpm, in 7th gear, is just unbelievable. Sooooo powerful.
Also, it was incredibly comfortable - oh, and it looks like sex on wheels. Even better in the metal than on paper. It actually looks smaller in real life than I had imagined.

And there it is...what a BEAST.

How did it feel at speed? Was it loud in the cockpit? Was it roomy? Hard to keep in a straight line? Did you keep track of the gas mileage? Was the steering light or heavy at low/high speed? How'd it sound? What was the road like that you drove on: straight, curvy, etc? Was it raining? Are you SURE you didn't press the M-Button lol? Was it a manual or automatic? I love the wheels on this car.

Sorry so many questions. I think I will be replacing my Bentley Flying Spur with this car, in my dream garage, lol. I'd give my left testicle for this car.

powerclown: The car is an SMG car, so think manual w/o a clutch and you'd be close.

The car looks really damn good, better than I expected, but oh to be a practical person and want 4 doors...

Powerclown, to answer in no particular order:
-It was bone dry, about 30 degrees celsius.
-Roads were basically Autobahn the entire way, except for about 45km of single lane tarnac country road towards the end. So lots of straight, with 220 km sweepers. and a few tight corners way at the end.
-Only sound in the cockpit, exceptc for the stereo, was the 10 cylinders going batshit, when I stepped on it. Other than that, smooth as silk, except for some tire noise under heavy braking.
- Not roomy compared to most cars, but compared to the 911 turbo it is replacing in my boss' garage, quite spacious. Also, it has a big boot. We're talking you could fit a body bakc there, if you tried.
- Didn't keep the mileage under observation, but it does about 400km to a tank under highway conditions.
-It was rocksolid in a straight line, at any speed, even 220km with significant crosswinds.
-as mentioned, it's an SMG gearbox, or manu-matic. It has 7 paddle-actuated gears and a software controlled clutch. Very sweet in manual, but a little annoying to drive, when you only have the bottom 5500 rpm to work with. It tends to short-shift very heavily when you're not caning it.
-The sound of it, even when you can only rev the bottom 5500 - is unbelievable! Think formula 1 engine, with better mufflers.
- The steering has computer controlled ratios, adding weight to the steering as you add speed to the car. A little odd at first, but you get used to it.
-....yeah...I'm sure I didn't press the M-button. Although I was sorely tempted!!

Oh - did I mention that because my boss fell so much in love with the Beemer, that i was forced to drive a 60's Mustang GT with a 351 engine home that evening? Quite the contrast to the M6!! The damn thing shakes on its suspension when you gun it in neutral...

Yeah, I have a 2001 M5 and can only image what an extra 100 hp does to the car. Which is why I've told myself I won't look at the new ones until a few years from now.... btw, I really think the only to go with BMWs is black

Bendsley, that is a sweet 545. I "disagree" with the spoiler, but lurve the those wheels. I love the discs peeking through. Next time you change brake pads, switch up the discs to some crossdrilled/ventilates numbers - make it look even sweeter.

Username: That M is beautiful, and yes, 100 hp more surely would make a difference. What really makes the difference, though, to me is the electronics underpinning it all. The trick suspension, the transmission, engine management, etc... The way they've managed to make all these things act in unison.

I'm thinking about buying the 130i, with M-suspension (they aren't labelling it the M1, because the history behind that badge is so long, but basically that's what it is). 265 hp, rwd hot hatch. I can't wait to drive it... Probably won't be able to buy it for another couple years. It's not a vehicle suited for work in the South Sudan...

I just took a look at the 130i w/ M-suspension - that looks pretty good. I sure wish we'd get them over here in America, it would make a great daily driver. It is always good to wait a few years to get a car - let someone else take the depreciation hit.

I've driven a few late model german cars and they are quite different from anything made in America, Japan, Britain, etc. Truly built for high-speed motoring, and stable at speed unlike anything else. Thanks for the vicarious thrill. Any plans to drive it again in the future?

(Haha, I know what you mean about the Mustang shake -- they made no attempt to isolate the engine from the rest of the car, but this is part of what makes them unique. So many great cars out there!)

You can't really see a whole lot.. but the car has a full leather interior (dashboard, underdash, center console, etc) w/ a alacantra (basically suede) headliner. The picture doesn't do a lot to show just how pimped out the inside of the car is. Everything you touch in the car is either leather or wood, with the exception of the carpet and the radio buttons, of course. I'm sure this is the same thing with the new m5/m6 when you get the luxury leather option.

Gots to love that video! I've yet to actually see a test of the M6 on TV, though. BTW, as a perk of my current employment, I got to take the lastest Carrera 4S for a spin the other day. Awesome little car, and sooo tight. Most balanced car I've ever driven. I can't wait until I get a chance to try out the Cayman, thought. Apparently its unbelievable to drive.
