Info on 3000gt vr4
Was thinking about purchasing one of these 3000gt vr4 1991, because I am looking for a fun sport's car with some kick to it. however, I am not tooooo familiar with this vehicle. Anybody able to give me some outsider info on it? Drive well? MPG? Break down alot? When do they start breaking down? Cost alot to maintain? Any of that type of info would be great Thanks guys

ok here we go (cracks knuckles). The 3000gt is a sport luxury coupe designed in conjunction by dodge and mitsubishi. (mostly mitsu, but dodge also sold it as the Stealth R/T). It is a fairly large car, and is by no means light, so dont think itll handle like a go kart or anything. Since you are looking at a vr4, that means you get the lovely twin turbo 4wd model. I hope you plan on getting it with a manual trans, because if its auto theres no point to owning a sports car. The vr4 is pretty darn fast stock, and with some work and some parts it can be REAL fast. They drive fairly smooth, and are relatively roomy for a sports car. The brakes are pretty solid from what ive seen, and they dont seem to break to much. The only things to think about are; its a '91 so it prolly have a fair amount of miles on it, and turbos age along with every other part of the car. Check for things like shaft play in the turbo (get in there and wiggle on the shaft in the turbine, if it moves pretty much at all, you may need to rebuild the turbo in the future). MPG of the car will prolly be something like 18-19 city, 22 ish freeway, depending how much you hammer on the gas (thats a fun car to throttle). Also realize that insurance wont be great on it. Oh and last, they come with stock 17 or 18 inch wheels and somewhat lo pro tires, so avoid potholes.

vr4 is awd, all wheel steering, twin turbo v6 that weighs north of 3800lbs. it is highway cruiser not a canyon carver. its maintance bills rival that of the 300xz TT of the same time period. one look at the engine bay will sober any drunk mechanic up in a hurry. the AWD is viscous coupling, so you only get power to the rear wheels when the fornt wheels slip. so the rest of the time your draging around dead weight. furthermore it works by fluid shearing so they are very very prone to overheating and cooking the synthetic fluid in them. after 14years of abuse i would be surprised if it even functioned at all.

Vroooooooom!!!
I always wanted one of those. It was my dream car for a long time, but is just to needy in the maint. dept.. If your looking for a fast luxury sports car like the VR4 Then try out a SC400 Lexus. They are very badass and have awesome traction control, so they are safe too. One of those will give you a lot of enjoyment, besides looking like a PIMP. I have spent a lot of seat time driving one so I can confidently say you should check it Out!

the sc400 is gonna cost alot more and deliver less than the 3kgt. The mistu is a 91, and they didnt make sc400's at that time if i recall. Not to mention that the 3000gt has an aftermarket following, and parts will be cheaper than those for the lexus. Besides, that 3000gt wont take that much more maintenance than any other car if u take care of it.

From everything that i've read, 3kgt's are not all that great of cars. Despite their awesome looks, and massive power, they are just not worth it in the end. Mitsu puts out a lot of shitty products, and that kind of car is going to have been beat on.
If you have your heart set on a TT car, i'd go with a 300zx over a 3kgt every day of the week. With an original price tag of close to 45k, the 300zx, if with its original owner, is going to be a lot better. Not to mention look nicer. The trannys are also quite weak, the auto's especially. The DSM community has a lot of info on these types of cars; check out Http://www.dsmtalk.com . If you buy one, you'll spend more time on that site than you want to -_^. |
