Found a convertible for my mom but why is the price so high?
Well my mom wants a convertible really really bad. I found one at the local dealership that would be perfect for her. It's a 1989 Mustang GT, V8 (she wants something that is moderatly quick) Automatic (she can't drive a stick worth a shit) It's in really nice shape, the top is good, the seats could be better, someone put a nice dual exhaust on it, some moron put a Lund stick on hoodscoop (ick). The dealer wants $8900 for it. And it only blue books for about $3900 max. I think it would be a good car, since I know where to get parts and I know how to fix them. But why would a dealership mark a car up that much? Any chance of having them dock $5000 off the sticker price?

Maybe the engine has been modified.
I think you should be able to talk the dealer down a lot, though. Just make it clear that you like the car, but tell him that you can get the same thing elsewhere for much cheaper, and then go to leave. He'll probably give you some BS about how his car is special, but will ask for your number. You'll almost certainly get a call in a few days with a much better price. You can keep playing this game until you get what you want (keep saying that you'll think about it). I doubt he'll sell that car at anywhere near the advertised price, and he knows it. |

I dont think it matters how much the engine is modified or not. People can put over 70 grand in their car, and when it comes time to sell it, not really be able to get more than 10000 if their lucky. I dont know much about Mustangs, buy damn, 9 grand for an '89. Was anything rare about it, was it white, was it possibly vanilla ice's mustang?

I'd venture to say one of those in good shape is worth more than $3900. Well-kept GT's hold their value well because they're light, quick, have a TON of performance parts available, and a lot of them have been beaten to death or wrapped around trees so it's hard to find a good specimen. The fact that it's a convertible adds to this as well since they're a lot more rare. How many miles are on it?
$8900 is outrageous though. If it has low mileage and is mechanically in excellent shape I could see it going for $5-6k. |
