It does look like a bad accident between Camry and Chevy. My wife has a 03 Impala LS, and I definiately prefer the older style.

07 it and the Monte Carlo will we RWD with the LS2 under hood(rumored along with the GTO and Camaro, but I think the new 05 GTO already has the LS2)

Yeah the GTO already has the LS2. The new Impala and the new Monte Carlo both will get optional V8s in the new refreshened models. Still sucks about the FWD though that Monte isn't half bad.

The Impala has gone from bad to worse.
It's like they gave up and said, 'oh fuggit, lets just copy the camry'...
The best thing that can be said about the CamPala is that it doesn't have the Monte Carlo's unbelievably obnoxious fender lines. The automotive equivalent of a bad toupe. OMFG....

monte carlo is schedualed for the zeta platfrom till the 2009 calender year. also i doubt you will see a v8 in it other than in the ss trim. the global v6 will be the engine of choice for most trims.

as long as its RWD you can drop any engine in it then!

from what i heard, the v8 wont be rear wheel drive (stupid move) since the new bonnivelle will have a v8 and still be fwd. Those cars share the same platform. but if it does change for 07 like Pain Train said, then GM will be competing with itself.

The Impala doesn't look bad, exactly, just not interesting.
The Monte Carlo looks better then it did, but still not good.
I'm interested to see how a FWD V8 handles in a performance car (though I'm predicting horrific understeer), I think that hasn't been done since the Olds Tornado? Maybe it'll be a drag strip monster (of sorts)?

First Ford makes the new Focus look like the Camry, now the Impala and Camry have collided...

Waiting on the Neon/Camry mix now....

Edit: Stupid question: Are these production models or preliminary/concept vehicles? Hard to tell with the Auto Show and all that this time of year...

The biggest mistake GM made with the Impala is they got rid of the classic round tail lights...they can't do that, changeing that would be like having the new corvette comeing out with out round tail lights. Impala has had round tail lights ever sence it rolled off the line way back.

Cadillac has until just recently been V8+FWD across the board. The Seville STS/Eldorado ETC are their more performance-oriented cars, and what I've heard the handling and performance is quite impressive, but they do have a good bit of torque steer. I think the Bonneville GXP is out now, it has is FWD and has a slightly smaller version of the Northstar in it.

The Impala looks way too much like a Dodge Stratus to me.

Nothing like the mid 80s Monte Carlo SS. Granted the 305 wasn't a rocket motor but man that was fun with t-tops. My sister had a black one man it was cool. I miss the Impala based of the Caprice Classic with the LT-1 spec motor.

My brother buddy had a blue 85 Monte, but it was the SS with a 350 but sounded like a 396......That was a damn nice car!

actually the terms used for the handleing of them was "excessive understeer" followed by "too fucking soft". to be fair you really can;t get them to handle, though they do make great touring cars. floaty, numb and overboosted is probably the best way to describe the controls. however the motor picks up them up and moves them surprisingly quick, and the brakes are damn impressive. the torque steer is minimal since it uses equal length axels. combine with the hydralic motor mounts and the abundance of braces tying the engine and transmission together you barley feel any engine vibrations. they feel quite different to drive than say a 3 series BMW.
