skyline question

i always see people talk about skylines.......but i have no idea what makes these cars so interesting can someone please fill me in about skylines why do people like them?? are they illegal in north american...or should i say some models?? I have tried looking at skyline fan pages but they provide no info that i am looking for just pics

Halx 10-26-2004 03:14 PM

Nissan Skyline GTR. Mainly Japanese and European distribution. I think they make a Skyline with the body of the Inifiniti G35 Coupe... either that or the guy I saw on the freeway was clever with the badging.

The generations go:
R32 : 89-94
R33 : 95-98
R34 : 99-02

They are just racing cars.. nothin special.

skibum 10-26-2004 03:28 PM

Nothing that special about them. Popularity stems from Gran Turismo. They really ain't any faster than any other cars out there. They are not illegal here, just not sold here yet. A company in Cali will import one but it costs stupid amounts of money. Nissan is suppose to bring them here in the next few years. The next generation Skyline is the G35 with more power, so some people are buying the G35 and sticking skyline badges on em.

herostar 10-26-2004 04:37 PM

They are a really good platform to build on. The skyline car was created to compete in the factory tran turismo racing series. The best thing about it is the 6 cylinder turbo engine and all wheel drive. They can also make 700+ horsepower on stock internals. That and they look really really mean. The infinity G35 is almost the same as the new skyline R35.

blar 10-26-2004 07:54 PM

ah really so geez all the hype i see is really just nothing yea i just saw pics on a japanese website of the G35 with skyline onthe front and back before i came here

so the reason why i don't see any of the R34 and R33 is becuase they don't really sell them and they will be expensive interesting i was expecting this car to be something special

animal909 10-27-2004 01:14 AM

they are illegal to own in CALI if you don't get them federalized. Motorex is a company that specializes in bringing Skylines to the United States and having them fully legalized.

mdryfhout 10-27-2004 03:39 AM

Top cars Engine wise body and handling ( the gtr ones ) r32 r33 r34 and hopefully the r35 , They have great performace potential can easily crack a 1000hp out of the in new zealand we have 2 running low 8second 1/4 miles they are geat track and road cars as well they are one of best jap cars ever made

Lockjaw 10-27-2004 05:27 AM

Yeah the GT-R versions of the Skyline are special. It's not just hype it's there for a reason. Just like the Supra it is basically a factory built race car and that is VERY special in this day and age of soulless vehicles.
It's capable of mind blowing power. The RB26DETT is one of the stoutest motors ever built. It also handles fairly well and looks pretty nice. In Japan they aren't expensive and would be the cost of a Corvette over here. So yes it's a magnificent car.
Probably one of like 5 Japanese cars I would ever want to drive or own.

blar 10-27-2004 03:50 PM

ah ok thanks guys for the replies

thats really interesting loskjaw so i suppose that they are popular in japan

does the G35's here differ that much from the skylines with the G35 body??

animal909 10-27-2004 05:57 PM

same platform... actually its kind of wierd. If you look at the infiniti brand, thats what nissan looks like all over the world. Most of the nissan models here in north america are only in north america. The 00 maxima you see in the states are only in the states while the 00 I30 in the states is actaully a maxima in every other part of the world.

MSD 10-27-2004 07:26 PM

Yeah, we get shafted when it comes to Japanese cars. Everything is rebadged or tuned down.

Death_alive 10-28-2004 05:07 AM

the Rb26dett... it is THE tuning motor... Rumors had it that you can almost double your Hp only by connecting a computer to the ecu of the car (the car having near 240 or so hp stock), and changing almost all the stock setting. One of it's features that people dream about is its drifting option ;) so in a few words... Its a playstation on wheels and a tuner dream, if you want some vids about a skyline braking the 8sec on the 1/4 mile I will post a link.

By the way its not how the car looks, but how it feels, alot of people comments the look of the skyline saying it's ugly theres nothing really nice about it... but its all about the motor boys. If you need some more info about the engine
type : RB26DETT
In google you should find some good info.

animal909 10-28-2004 06:05 AM

not 240 stock but more like 358 stock. It is regulated by the unspoken gentlemen's agreement in japan. But yes, the rb26dett is a very responsive engine. I remember in Sport compact magazine, they had a motorex blackbird (legalized r34) and they did some dyno base runs. Added that octane NOS booster (off road racing formula) and gained 10whp average throughout the powerband. Now that is some serious response. Hopefully, the new VQ35DE will be jsut as responsive or even more when they release the GT-R here in the states. Rumor is that it will be twin turbo pushing 400+ hp. Another rumor has that it will carry the Q45 engine, a V8 4.5 currently tuned to around 340 hp.

This Skyline blurb is in this month's Car & Driver magazine:

The illustration below depicts the upcoming Nissan Skyline GT-R. The GT-R version of the Skyline has always been a special high-performance offering in Nissan's lineup, and this one will continue that tradition. The GT-R probably has the record for the number of car-mag stories about a vehicle that has never been available in the U.S., and it remains high on our wish list.

Built on a new platform that is not shared with the standard-model Skyline, or Infiniti G35 coupe, as it's known stateside, it will likely make the GT-R far more expensive than run-of-the-mill G35 coupes.

There are conflicting reports out of Japan regarding the powerplant. One camp believes the GT-R will be powered by a Cosworth-developed twin-turbo version of the current 3.5-liter V-6, offering at least 450 horsepower. Others believe a new twin-turbo 3.2-liter V-6 will get the call.

To make sure the GT-R has supercar handling, chassis engineers from Lotus were selected to develop its steering, suspension, and drivetrain. Could this special Skyline so long denied to U.S. enthusiasts finally come to the States? "G35 GT-R" has a certain ring to it, but it's up to Nissan or Infiniti's product planners to decide whether it will come to our shores.

WOW that car looks good

I think they will bring it over here people will buy it....in my opinon its going to be just like the M3

Scorps 10-29-2004 10:50 AM

I would buy one of them for sure...just need to barrow the money off someone!

Halx 10-29-2004 11:03 AM

A liiiiiittle out of my pricerange, I'll wager.

But it does confirm that the G35 IS the Skyline, just not the GTR

HunterDevourer 11-06-2004 07:49 PM

Yep, in Japan the G35 is badged as the Nissan Skyline ?35.
The GTR skyline is so good because it was designed to be a fantastic road going race car, superbly designed for a purpose of going fast both in corners and in straights.
It has a great four wheel drive torque splitting system, which provides traction to the front wheels when the rears are losing traction, as well as doing it between wheels to maintain peak traction.
It handles very well, is easy to modify to be even better, and is a superbly designed car.

My guess it would be the R35

animal909 11-08-2004 05:30 AM

V35 is the chassis name of the skyline in japan. Theory behind it is because the r3* was powered by the "R"b26det or tt engine and the new one is powered by the "v"q35 engine found in all the new Nissan Cars.

The AWD system is an Attessa which is way better than the other AWD systems. Evo's and STI's use a front wheel drive based system while the Skyline uses true distribution.

except the driver is on the other side and the skyline in japan looks like a stock g35.

dood 11-08-2004 09:14 PM

They will be available in the states as of 2007 (this is confirmed) and will be sold under the Infiniti brand. I will be very tempted to upgrade from my Z unless something new catches my eye between now and then.
