Oldsmobile Intrigue - 98

Does anyone else here have the Olds Intrigue 98?? I have about 150,000 miles on it and I'm wondering what to expect down the short near future road as far as repairs that may need completed. So far I can honestly say this American made car is lasting well and doing okay for the amount of driving I've done on it in such a short amount of time.

I've got a 99 GLS with 120,000 miles. I've been doing normal maintenance (brakes, tires, oil, everything normal). It's been running great. So how will the next 30,000 miles be?

I wouldn't be concerned about the drivetrain in it. It's pretty solid. Should get you to the 200,000 mile mark easily enough. I think the biggest things for a car with that mileage and age is squeaks and rattles. My 1997 Cutlass Supreme has 142,000 miles on it, and has just started to develop some rattles in the rear of the car over big bumps. I'm not too worried about them, really. More of an annoyance, really. I have a different engine than you do, so my experiece doesn't relate, but the transmission is the same, and it's shifting solid, and not making much noise. Here's to another 100,000 miles!

If it is a Gen3 3.8 V6...only problems I know of are leaky upper intake manifolds (about $400 w/labor) and leaky oil pan gaskets (parts cheap...labor???).

What engine is in it?

DEI37 10-20-2004 07:03 PM

It's a 3.8. The '98 was the first year for the car, and the 3.5 DOHC V6 didn't come until 2000, if I remember right.

the engine will most likely last for a while longer, does it have any problems running right now? From my experience you will most likely have trouble with things like the alternator and transmission.

Every car with a 3.8 my family has owned goes over 200k easily. usually you will have a thermostat or a alternator go bad..but that stuff will go bad on any car with lots of miles. Yeah some do have that plastic intake but I believe they have solved that problem.

nothing really wrong with mine though i noticed i need to change the transmission fluid very soon - it's been awhile. the oil pan does need it's gasket changed as i noticed a minor oil leak. the car is solid though so i can't complain much. i did some minor work on it.. changed radiator fluid, new alt, new battery and that's about the extent. i'm very pleased with this american car.

Other than brakes there are few problems.

My moms car had a rattle in the rear end it was the damn tire iron rolling around in the trunk:D

the 4t65e tranny in them has a reusable gasket. every aftermarket one i have seen leaks. in general removng the pan and cleaning it, the gasket and then retorquing solves any leaks from the pan. side cover seals and axels seal are known to go form time to time as well and wick down and across the pan.
