As your only means of transport?
Well... If you live in the United States, then NO. Our traffic moves at too high of a pace to be primary transportation. I don't want to hear any "but I live in an urban area!"... I live in a large city ( 750,000 + people ) and I know plenty of non-interstate stretches that move at 50 mph+. They would be useful if you were doing a short ( 1-3 mile) commute on them every day, but not an across town one. And forget about interstate travel, unless you buy one of the 650 scooters which are $8-9k. Add in very little storage space, and they just don't make sense as an ONLY vehicle. Scooters here cost as much as a used Geo Metro... you can get a 1990s car for the same price as a low-end scooter. The fuel tradeoff would be bare minimum. And you'd have highway capability, storage, and good fuel economy. If you live elsewhere, and automobile liscenses are expensive, and fuel is tremendously expensive, then start by looking at the 50cc four strokes so you don't have to carry around oil... |
