Transmission Problem on '92 BMW 525i
I was just wondering if anyone could give me a better idea what might be wrong with this transmission (92 BMW 525i if you didn't see the title. It's the 4-speed automatic... I know, I know...)
Here are the symptoms: After driving in 4th gear for a while (i.e. down the interstate to get from city to city) I eventually have to stop once I get back in town. After the car comes to a stop for the 2nd or 3rd time, it has problems w/ 2nd gear. It doesn't seem to catch. The engine revs when I push the gas, but the car doesn't go much. After a bit, the computer detects this and forces the car into 3rd until the engine is stopped. It gives an error message that says the electronic shift has failed. The car goes into 3rd so that I can get wherever I need to. Once I turn the car off and let it sit for a bit, it works fine again. This has never happened just driving around town, but I haven't had any trips more than 15 minutes that didn't involve the interstate.

It sounds like a clutch pack is starting to fail. I don't know BMW trannys for squat though. It is typical that once a tranny heats up the clutch pack is more likely to slip but normally this happens in 4th gear and not second.
