The muscular Ford Mustang GT-R rekindles the legend’s road racing glory and the magic of 5.0-liter Mustangs in a stunning racing concept making its world debut today. The Mustang GT-R signals a potential future race car while honoring four decades of performance glory just days before Mustang’s 40th anniversary. The bright Valencia Orange car – inspired by the famous Grabber Orange 1970 Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am race cars (the Yellow Mustangs) piloted by race legends, including Parnelli Jones – is a technological showcase that, when peeled back, reveals a number of existing or production-feasible racing parts.

The Mustang GT-R features Ford Racing’s 440-horsepower 'Cammer' crate engine, already affordably available to grassroots racers that could be tuned to produce more than 500 horsepower under certain race series rules. In 2003, a tuned 505-horsepower version of the 'Cammer' notched world-class performance and endurance credentials by powering a Mustang to victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona race in the Daytona Prototype category.

The race car is engineered to tackle the world’s toughest road and street courses with a stiff structure (based on the all-new 2005 Mustang scheduled for sale this fall), a collection of the most sophisticated racing parts from many racing series and a Formula One-inspired steering wheel. However, the Mustang GT-R could be easily transformed into an affordable, competitive option for grassroots teams as it uses 85 percent of the 2005 Mustang’s body components along, the same suspension setups and the already-attainable 'Cammer' powerplant.

While conceptual in spirit, the Mustang GT-R is built by racers and is a capable performer with an eye on stepping up Mustang’s road-racing presence. Several racing series – American LeMans, SCCA Trans-Am, GrandAm Cup and the FIA – could easily accommodate the Mustang GT-R. For example, the car could meet some series rules with basic modifications to the brakes, wheels, tires and body parts.

While the Mustang GT-R is a concept, the car was engineered to perform at racing speeds with parts available to weekend warriors through the 2004 Ford Racing catalog today. The 5.0-liter EFI 'Cammer' crate engine, including the wiring harness kit, will sell for an MSRP of $14,995. The 'Cammer' engine takes the guesswork out of installation projects by offering a choice of several length 5.0-liter,4-valve modular wiring harness kits that are created specifically to cover the most popular engine swap configurations.

What’s more, harness kits – which include the powertrain control module (PCM) – provide all of the necessary electrical connectors, including end terminals, a fuse box, a power distribution box, as well as switch connectors and fuel pump relays. The role cage, rear spoiler and some chassis components are all being considered for further development.

All I can say is: Holy fuck! This car is badass!

silent_jay 04-08-2004 02:35 PM

WOW that is just WOW

Cynthetiq 04-08-2004 02:39 PM

nice. I like it.

with the rear wing and little headlights, I'm waiting for the people to call it "rice" in 3, 2, 1....

silent_jay 04-08-2004 02:43 PM

Oh we all know that's coming, I can hardly wait.

JStrider 04-08-2004 02:46 PM

id like it a bit better if they toned down the spoiler a lil bit...

but damn either way its waaaay awesome!

merkerguitars 04-08-2004 03:04 PM

I absolutely love the interior....it's so close to a race car :) sorta reminds me of eleanor from the newest version of gone in 60 seconds

Halx 04-08-2004 03:09 PM

:O

holy shit that's nice... as much as I hate ford, that is nice

Fenton-J-Cool 04-08-2004 03:10 PM

GODDAMN RICE!!!!!!!!!

That was for you, Cynthetiq.
But seriously, that is really offensive on the eyes
It's like a Skyline fucked a Mustang and this is their love child :C

Okay, I've gone over the photos carefully many many times. I would totally hit it. But the interior is a little.. lacklustre ;p

BulletBob 04-08-2004 06:14 PM

I'd take a real GT-R over that any day of the week but I do like that Mustang.

username 04-08-2004 07:27 PM

Finally, a Mustang that I like that isn't from the 1960s.

The wing could use a little toning down tho if I was driving that on the street.

madsenj37 04-08-2004 07:47 PM

For the first time in my life I want a mustang that is younger than me.

jizzmasterp 04-08-2004 07:53 PM

That is a sweet car. Ford should make a production version of it.

MSD 04-08-2004 08:11 PM

I'll agree that the wing can be toned down for the street (although most who bought one would probably race it.) It's not rice if it helps performance.

WarWagon 04-08-2004 08:51 PM

They tried too hard. I do like the interior though.

Tech 04-08-2004 10:02 PM

...

you guys do realize that this isn't a street car at all, and won't be driven on the street? it's a race car, everything on that car has a function, even the wing.

that's like telling them to tone down the "look" of the corvette C5-R or the ferrari 575GTC or the BMW M3 GTR like you're going to be driving one of THEM on the street...

NukingFuts 04-08-2004 10:08 PM

That is bad ass!

89transam 04-08-2004 10:09 PM

The exaust , wing , fans , interior all look like ass. But besides that

Rippley 04-09-2004 01:28 AM

Only two things I don't get:

1: Why aren't the discs drilled and grooved?
2: Why does the accelerator look like that, just a tiny little t-bar... Did they run out of diamond-plate?

Those aren't complaints, just questions. I'd probably kill to drive that badboy....! :D

leftturn109 04-09-2004 05:00 AM

i have always hated the mustangs after 1970 but this one looks pretty hot

You do realize this is a race car and not a Bentley.

CamaroRS1967 04-09-2004 08:20 AM

Very impressive! I am definately not a Ford man, but this car looks great.

silent_jay 04-09-2004 03:37 PM

I think I know it's a race car, maybe it's the interior that gave it away. Oh yeah GT-R doesn't always mean race car look at the skyline that was for the street as well, and all those shitty grand prix's, and grand am's, and sunfires they all have a GTR model that they sell and they are the farthest thing from a race car.

Slayer 04-10-2004 03:51 PM

Damn it looks awesome.

theguyondacouch 04-10-2004 05:23 PM

That is badass. It reminds me of the boss 302.

Destrox 04-10-2004 06:06 PM

That car gives me a chubby.

opey99 04-10-2004 08:06 PM

I won't call it rice, but the wing on the 2000 cobra R fits better than the one here, I just don't like it much, I'd toss that specific sid exhaust too, just my taste

SVT01Cobra 04-10-2004 08:13 PM

*edit*
If the '06 Cobra ends up looking anything like that, I would nut my pants seeing those on the street.

I would say keep the ground effects in the front, and sides, and tone down the exhaust a little. It would be perfect.

asudevil83 04-11-2004 04:52 PM

yeah, i'm in love. when i get the money (hopefully sooner rather than later) i am definately picking up the new Stang. they look amazing.

Esoteric 04-11-2004 08:29 PM

Damn, that looks dope. Wow!

Confederate 04-11-2004 10:07 PM

looks a little ricey for my tastem clean it up a little bit and I am sold

silent_jay 04-12-2004 06:12 AM

Ricey how? Explain. Ricers normally can't back up the looks and this obviously can, and notice it is a race car kinda hard to have a ricer race car so you should explain why it is rice

I don't see anything wrong with the exhaust!:hmm:

supafly 04-13-2004 10:36 AM

Great looking car!

twilightfoix 04-13-2004 10:41 AM

i wanna make love to it so damn sexy

Spyder_Venom 04-13-2004 11:03 AM

Brembo's, side exhaust, rear defuser, ummmmmmm looks almost like they want to turn a Mustang into a real race car, I like it! (yes I know the purpose, but if you have ever seen a Cobra R on the track, you would understand it is a FAR cry from a race car). That cage is nice and tight, very well done install.

And for those ripping on the wing - function over form, if you want something nice to look at, buy a Audi TT... If you want something that goes fast, well look again at this car.

thadon 04-13-2004 02:51 PM

that is one bad azz Viper eater, I want one
