I'm trying to see the cars as quickly as I can see them. If I don't see them I'm not going to just post a picture. This is a rare car sightings thread. I need to see it to post it.

I did just see a maybach and the other day I saw an oragne Exige

The car itself is rare, plus I guess if I only see the one around here once every two years, it's still rare to me. So this past weekend I saw what must be the same Auburn Supercharged Roadster that I saw on Sept. 1, 2005 and posted in post #268, but this time it was driving downtown Phila heading west on Walnut St. I didn't have my camera with me this time, so here it was in Ardmore in 2005:

Rather than starting a new thread I'll add to this one and maybe somebody else will remember something rare they saw recently.

I don't know if you consider this "cheating" since it was at a little local car show held in the parking lot of a synagogue a couple blocks from my house.

Anyway, today I saw this 1957 Dual-Ghia D-500 Convertible. Only about 117 of these were ever built. I'm copying a little history I found about it online:
*************************************************
During the post-war revival, Virgil Exner at Chrysler hired Turin-based Ghia to build a number of special concepts on Dodge chassis. Among these were four Dodge Fire Arrows show cars that were designed and engineered as a feasible road-going model. They were extensively exhibited across America but were never put in production. This motivated Eugene Casaroll to buy the design and build the car himself.

Having started one of the first automobile shipping companies in America, Casaroll was a big player in the industry. He had seen the Firearrrow concept cars and wanted to continue the sensation they caused at the motor shows. The first step was to start Dual Motors in Michigan which was the launching point for the Dual-Ghias.

Dual Motors bought bare chassis straight from Dodge then shipped them to the doors of Carrozzeria Ghia in Italy. One of Casaroll's partners, Paul Farago enlarged the overall design of the show cars to better accommodate passengers and luggage. Ghia applied finishing touches such as signature tail fins and an updated interior and many luxurious appointments. The partnership was mutually beneficial and Casaroll agreed to call their new project the Dual-Ghia.

For a limited production Italo-Anglo hybrid, the Dual-Ghia was quite a success. Casaroll targeted his marketing towards the rich and famous who would could afford the car's expensive craftsmanship. At $7,600 USD, the Dual-Ghia cost even more than a top of the line Cadillac. However, this didn't stop customers like Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Eddie Fisher, Glenn Ford and Desi Arnaz from cashing in. They were most likely drawn to the car's Italian style and finish with the V8's American power.

Built in both coupes and convertibles around 117 Dual-Ghias were made from 1957 onwards. This was far below Casaroll's initial estimate of 150 cars per year, but still a great number for a specially-built car.

The Dual-Ghia was followed up in 1961 with the L6.4. With newer styling and a larger engine, this was Casaroll's comeback attempt. Only 26 cars of these were completed before high-overhead costs and poor sales ended Dual Motors.

And for your continued entertainment, though these are not quite as rare, some of the other cars:

A couple of my buddies, the guy on the right owns the highly moded M3 Bimmer and organized the show:

Saw both a Murcielago and an R8 Saturday morning. I live right near Automotive Restorations, a very high end restoration/customs shop, so its pretty common to see this kind of stuff, along with the mega-high-buck classics.

There are more now. A company in (i think) Arizona is taking all the factory spare parts and building "new" ones out of them. I understand they're also modernizing the engines while they're at it. $40,000.

All jokes aside, I used to live in miami, and you'll see a buttload of expensive/rare cars there, especially in the downtown area. many porsches/ferraris.
Also one of my neighbours here has a nice classic old prosche, i'll see if I can take a picture.
And this car I saw in NYC. i have no idea what kind/brand/year it is:

biznatch,
It's hard to make a definitive conclusion from that pic, but that's probably one of the several kit type cars patterned after a late '30's Lincoln Zephyr. Here's a couple pics of what made me think that:

From comments I see on various car forums, it seems that the external design of the R8 is controversial, but I like it a lot. But I wish it was more powerful/faster. I know that's only one criteria but IMO it's quite weak in that area.

One of my favorite Porsches is the GT3...other than the Carrera GT which is virtually unobtainable. And you...at least I don't... see many around. Today I saw about a dozen, probably more, at New Jersey Motorsports Park. I went to check out the track and found a Porsche club running there today...cool watching them blast around...very fast. With high gas prices I'm getting improved milage from these pics since I also posted them in the longest thread.

I went back to that track I mentioned above, this time to drive my car...

..but the rare car sighting I'm reporting was my favorite car at the track this day. Being an old motorhead who loves roadracing, I have a soft spot for American muscle cars. So in spite of all sorts of high end exotic Ferrari's and Porsches and many other nice cars, my fav was this 1964 Pontiac GTO...which would be rare enough even if it was stock, but this one has its own notoriety and is a "one off" handmade special. It was featured as a cover story in Hot Rod magazine a while back, as well as other automotive publications and websites. The young guy who owns and drives it bought it when he was 14 y.o. as a partly stripped out, beater; he fixed it up and drag raced it a while; then got into roadracing but crashed it real bad after a total brake failure...then decided to rebuild the whole car himself into his dream road warrior. This thing was probably the fastest, or at least one of the fastest, cars there this day. Awesome car, I love this thing:

...and a gratuitous closing pic of my car..the black one..next to a real nice small block ERA Cobra, destroked 302 c.i. motor with four two-barrel Webers on it.

I forgot if we have "rules" about where these are to be seen...though we know we don't need no stinkin rules...but if car shows are not intended, let me know and I won't do it again. This was the CF Benefit Car Show at Lahaska PA...about the 7th year for this show for a good cause; I showed my car just for support though it's not really a show car. But here's a couple nice rare'ish cars I saw among many other nice cars:

I'm most interested to learn more about this one so if somebody can steer me to a resource I'd appreciate it. It's a ...I think... 1962 Daimler Griffith, their own design 2.5 liter hemi V8, cool rare car:

Less than 130 of these ever existed and there are very few of those originals left, so this is definitely RARE!!!

I went paintballing with my two boys and three of their buddies today and on the way home we wanted to find a recently opened Sonic...couldn't find it so as we were driving through this converted industrial park which is now a mall, I tell the boys I'll ask the next place we see if they can give us directions...so I then see this interesting looking red car sitting outside one of the buildings so I pull over and take a couple pics of it, and then go inside the open garage to see if I can ask for directions...well two older guys like my age are working on this car up on a lift...the car outside was a lightweight 427 Ford Galaxie; the car up on the lift was a Ford Thunderbolt Fairlane clone...so I said to the guys how cool the cars are and they say "a real one is right there in the corner" so I look over and see a covered car and I say something like "...Wow, they are so rare I can't believe there is one here!" so they say go over and uncover it...!!! So here it is. Very rare and this Norristown Ford Thunderbolt has an extraordinary drag racing history...I'm guessing if this car came up for sale at Barrett-Jackson, with its history, originality, and provenance, I'd be surprised if it didn't sell for at least $200,000. The first pic is the real Norristown Ford Thunderbolt, followed by the others in my little story:

Here's a note about the Thunderbolt Fairlanes:

Thunderbolt
As the muscle car market took shape, Ford introduced a Fairlane for drag strip racing for 1964, heavily modified to incorporate a 427 CID (7.0 L) V8 with two four-barrel carburetors on a high-riser manifold, ram-air through the openings left by deleting the inboard headlights, equal-length headers, trunk-mounted battery, fiberglass hood, doors, fenders and front bumper, acrylic glass windows, and other lightweight options including deleted rear door window winders, carpeting, radio, sealant, sun visors, armrests, jack, lug wrench, heater, soundproofing, and passenger side windshield wiper. This special model, of which 111 to 127 total were made depending on who you ask, delivered 500 hp (373 kW) at 7,000 rpm and was known as the Thunderbolt. Here is another comment about the possible under-rated power: "...I watched a show the other week, that dynoed all the big blocks from that era. The 426 Hemi, a 427FE, a L88 427, and a Pontiac 421. All were in stock trim as they come from factory. The 427FE ford just like came in the Thunderbolt tested at 650hp and 525ft.lb. torque. That is an amazing engine for 1964 technology. By the way, the 426 did have 820hp factory, the L88 only had 550hp..."

I saw a rare car today. Only, I don't know what it was! Is there a website somewhere that has a listing of car emblems/brands so I can figure it out?

This one stood out against all of the luxury cars I see on a nearly-daily basis (BMW 7-series, Bentley, Ferrari, Porche, Lotus, etc.) but I just didn't recognize the emblem.

ETA: It was a Maserati. Quattroporte.

This past Sunday afternoon it was a nice day and I went out for a ride in my car...blasting around the winding roads near home. As I was driving down Morris Road between Bryn Mawr and Gladwyn, a car was going the other way and I almost crashed from the shocking surprise. It was one of my favorite cars of all time, a '66 or '67 Ferrari 275 GTB. Here's a pic of what it looks like, and below that, one of my favorite car videos of all time starring this great and rare car.
