WOW!!! 10x

found this vid just a little bit ago, its rather large, but pretty fucking crazy. and this shit is real by the way.

LINKY

LewisCouch 03-28-2004 09:04 PM

Remarkable! Those things are incredibly difficult to operate. This guy is a veritable genius and obvious master. Great link!

Confederate 03-28-2004 09:32 PM

watching it now, by far some awesome control

TheClarkster 03-28-2004 11:23 PM

Totally and utterly nuts.
When he had it hovering like an inch off the ground upside down... quite impressive.

asudevil83 03-29-2004 01:20 AM

that whole video had me in awe. i just sat there thinking "how the........what the......holy......dddaaaammmmnnnnn." i had no idea those things could do anything like they did. flying vertical, upside-down....you name it, it did it, and it did it flawlessly.

Silvy 03-29-2004 02:36 AM

That's amazing!

It also looks impossible!
Anyone with a gift for physics care to explain how rotors that counter gravity to get it off the ground do not push it into the ground when its flying upside down?

(it'd be neat to see an Apache do that...)

now that you bring that up....I would like someone to explain that!

89transam 03-29-2004 10:10 AM

Mabye they reverse the spin of the rotor?

That was my first thought too, but he would be doing that mighty fast!
Wouldn't that be more obvious then?

pocon1 03-29-2004 10:37 AM

I think the pitch of the rotor blades can be changed. When it was hovering upside down, you could see the exhaust being pulled toward the blades rather than being blown away. Most of the time during transitions, you could see a slight hesitation, and I think that was when the pitch of the blade changed.

merkerguitars 03-29-2004 10:56 AM

Thats pretty impressive....i bet that guy has practiced that for year...

Halx 03-29-2004 11:16 AM

it's impressive.. the only thing that made me doubt the authenticity is the near perfect trailing of the camera. I find myself believing it though, seeing as the tracking could be done with some video editing, no problem.

That is indeed plausible... that could be changed quicker than rotor spin direction.
Thanks for the tip!

you basically hit it on the money. i do not know about these rc helicopters, but on a real helicopter the blades change the angle of attack or pitch. an example:

when a helicopter is on the ground and is preparing to take off, the rotors are actually spinning at the same speed as if it was flying. to lift off the ground the pilot pulls back on the collective, (which controls the pitch of the blades). so when you watch a movie and a helicopter makes a louder noise, as if the blades were speeding up, when it is taking off. the noise you here is fake. the rotors are actually spinning at the same speed.

as for the rc copter being able to do all those maneuvers, the only reason i can give is that it is alot smaller therefore it can handle more g forces.

cool vid though.

brandon11983 03-29-2004 08:50 PM

I don't know shit about RC 'copters, but I've always wanted one, and that was some very impressive flying.

wrongfullyaccuzd 03-30-2004 01:27 AM

That was pretty crazy, how is that possible.

iamtheone 03-30-2004 05:45 PM

ok, I read all your comments and the damn link is dead.

dfence 03-30-2004 08:24 PM

new link
http://www.xar.ph/alan_vegasfunflydemo_2004.wmv

WarWagon 03-30-2004 08:51 PM

Thats fucking absurd. I want one just to hover outside of peoples' windows.

cr25ovet 03-30-2004 10:11 PM

looks like they play it backwards.

Cynthetiq 03-30-2004 10:11 PM

neat.

User Name 04-01-2004 01:54 PM

Both links don't seem to work. Here's a new one.
http://games.eof.net/ashke/alan_vega...ydemo_2004.wmv

CamaroRS1967 04-01-2004 02:34 PM

I didn't know that that kind of stuff was possible. Cool.

sixate 04-01-2004 02:58 PM

That was cool as fuck.

Now I wanna see it done with a real helicopter.

twilightfoix 04-01-2004 06:18 PM

that reminds me, how much do one of those things cost

Craven Morehead 04-02-2004 07:10 AM

Damned impressive.

Does anyone know how the fuel systems in these work? I'd think if it were a typical tube into the bottom of a fuel tank, the coptor would have fuel starvation when it was in anything other than a normal attitude. It was anything but normal throughout the entire video.

Sion 04-02-2004 11:03 PM

very fuckin cool

note to self: dont EVER play against that guy in any console video-games.

Chingal0 04-10-2004 02:42 AM

Bah, I'm not authorized..

Unlike areal heli, I do believe the speed of the motor can be changed, as well as the angle of the blade being variable.

wisj2 04-10-2004 11:45 AM

All 3 links above are now dead. I think I've seen this one, but would like to check it anyway.

This is one reason I'm hesitant about posting links from other places, they go dead too often, probably bandwidth issues. There are a lot of people who hang out here. I don't have a huge amount of webspace, but my bandwidth is unlimited which is a good thing. When I want to share something really good, I will more than likely just host it myself.

wisj2 04-12-2004 12:47 PM

Well, I finally found a link that works, glad I did, had not seen it before. Fucking Awesome!

And a story about the young pilot...

Hanxter 04-16-2004 09:14 AM

nope - none werky...

tkkfan 04-16-2004 09:37 AM

Thats really cool, but they've got to be playing the tape backwards. I can't seem to understand how its upside down and then it GAINS altitude. Seems it would be the other way around. Also, it seems to have unnatural movements.

I dunno really, just a guess

shakran 04-16-2004 09:55 AM

it worked for me. Holy CRAP. how the hell can he do that? the main rotor blades much change pitch incredibly fast to make that possible.

The pitch of the main rotor blade is more than likely changed by a big ass servo which can make 60 degrees of movement in a little less than .10 sec.
