Medium-heavy truck question (or three)
I have an '83 Chevy 7000 10-wheeler with a turbocharged 8.2 liter Detroit and a 5-speed Allison automatic, and Hendrickson walking-beam rear suspension. It weighs 35,000 pounds (29,000 on the drivers, 6,000 on the steer) due to the large hydraulic telecoping boom mounted to it.
First off, what does anyone know about an 8.2 L Detroit? any particular care and feeding habits? Another thing I'm wondering is if it would be possible to shoehorn an 8.3L C-series Cummins (or possibly a 3208 Cat) into it if and when the Detroit dies. I have been in on a few engine transplants (8.3 Cummins replacing a 555 Cummins in a Terra-Gator, NTC-350 replacing a Formula 315 in a Freightliner, a few others) so I fully understand that it will not be a simple swap. If it would even fit, would the shift points on the Allison need to be changed? And finally, how big of a headache is it to redo the bushings in a Hendrickson? Mine arent totally shot yet, but I dont plan on letting it get worn out bad enough the tires hit the framerails when you turn. Any help at all would be appreciated.
