Is street racing a taboo topic here?

Just wondering.

There are currently no rules, or policies, that expressely cover the subject of "street racing". Feel free to discuss the hell out of the topic, while following the standard rules of the TFP.

While it doesn't appear to be a taboo topic, and i haven't seen many threads on it at all lately, most auto forums dont minds discussions on it. On the other hand, most members of most forums tend to frown heavily upon illegal and/or wreckless street racing.

Street racing is not the smartest thing you can do but theres people out there that think they have nothing to lose. I believe you must draw the line somewhere, Im actually kinda glad the cops are cracking down on it just for the safety of everyone else. The most dumbest thing I ever seen at a illegal race was a guy in a modded WRX with hiz 4 year old son in a car seat in the back. This guy musta been so hard up for cash he raced a 800 dollar race wit hiz son in the car, thats just stupid, so yeah Im glad they are cracking down on it. Thanks.

There have been 4 teenagers killed in the Denver area in the last couple of months because they were stupid and street raced where they shouldn't have. A couple of innocent bystanders were killed as well. Racing is fun, but it doesn't belong on the street.

Well, as far as street racing goes, the people who participate in it get what they deserve. If they feel that 100 bucks is sufficient payment for the potential for killing themselves or others, then they deserve the tickets and the vehicle impounding.

I personally drive a "modified" Acura and at least once a day I get some kid come up to me and rev his engine hard at a stop light. So one day I just had it, and while sitting there at the light I saw a cop in a parking lot across the street, so I gunned the engine back at this punk, and when the light turned green we both took off, but since the speed limit was 35, as soon as I hit 35 I layed off the gas and let this hot shot fly past me... Guess who followed close behind him???

I drove past and waved!

I do that all the time in my modded accord...
punk rolls up and wants to race
light turns green
gun it to 40, then lay off
watch punk fly by, hoping there are cops around

..never are any though

A bunch of punks in ricers is not "racing." Its this term street racing that not only endangers/takes the lives of many, but it also gives legitimate racers like myself a bad name. The more "street racers" there are out there, the worse the rep we get, and they keep taking away our tracks.

Yeah this works real well in the Jeep, with the gobs of torque down low, i can beat just about any of them off the line too. And if its a 40/45 or so street, i almost alway "win" before i back off. But you gotta be real careful with this. Even without speeding, there is still a lot you can get pulled over and cited for if the cop wants - exhibition of acceleration, etc. Most wont....but they can, and you always gotta keep that in mind.

Precisely. The "stoplight challenge" of a couple kids revving Daddy's Corolla at anything they're stopped beside isn't street racing - it's just stupidity. It always pisses me off when I hear/read on the news that "seven street racers were killed" followed by "the five in one car and two in another while they raced down a crowded stretch of highway" ... right, because you race with passengers on a busy highway.

Have to watch out for that trick, however, since I have buddies who have been pulled over and cited for "hazardous acceleration," despite the fact that I have not a clue what that might entail.

I would think only a warning....cops can't give you a ticket for having a good reaction time

"Improper start from a stopped position".

I have seen it happen.

Or, they give you an excessive noise ticket. A friend of mine managed to get one with a bone-stock 3/4 ton pickup for launching out of a parking lot.

Cops tried to give me a ticket for squeaking the tires once....they didn't even make a full rotation! So I fought it and won

"Exhibition of speed"
Fun offense. It basically means the cop couldn't catch you for anything legitimate, but wanted to give you a ticket anyway. Some examples include: spinning tires, revving the engine at a light, swinging the back out around a corner, nitrous purge, "unnecessary acceleration" (why the hell should a cop be able to tel me what';s unnecessary?) changing lanes too fast, any sort of bulllshit they can use to claim you might be speeding when they're not around. Like speeding tickets and seat belt checks, purely a revenue-enhancement device.

A friend of mine got busted for a squeaky quarter turn. In Norway they get you with a paragraph saying "The driver should at all times have full control of the vehicle". I don't think "unnecessary acceleration" ( ) is covered unless your wheels spin.

I love to flash off the line at a light in my Chevy Venture when a bonehead kid in a 4 banger cavalier or stock civic with some lights and juice can exhaust on it pulls up beside me. With 185 hp the van can take off real well and when I hit 100km I just let off and let the boys go on by but I always take them off the line and often get the finger when they eventually pass me!! Heeheehee.

you gots ta have some fun, right? A loud muffler, some neon and a cold air intake does not a fast car make.

There's a (relatively) new law in Queensland that allows cops to impound your car if you race off the lights or squeal your tires. 24 hours for a first offence, I think something like 3 days for the second. Not sure what happens after that.
First month or so it was around, every ricer in town got impounded at one point or another, and then people stopped being stupid. Great little law, that one. Stopped me getting woken up at 3AM by idiots with more horsepower than brains, and probably saved a couple of lives too.

I fully understand reckless driving, but I refuse to accept that they can give what basically amounts to a speeding ticket, while you're not moving.

Now I know some people just like the WRX...I can't STAND the people who think its the best damn car out on the road. OF COURSE ITS THE FASTEST STOCK IN ITS DAMN CLASS...ITS A RALLY CAR. What do they do? RACE!

Anyways, so this guy spends 30 minutes weaving in and out of traffic...gunning the engine..and spooling his turbo non-stop at my Jetta GLI.

1) I don't feel the need to endanger life
2) I know my cars limits
3) 4WD vs. FWD...with about 50-100 HP difference and lacking a turbo

Do these people even know the other cars on the market?

I know what you’re all taking about and my friend has put about 5000$ into a Chevy safari van its got a nice turbo and a whole bunch of other engine mods. The coolest thing about this van is that it has two exhaust systems he designed and fabricated a valve to switch from stock exhaust to a performance exhaust. Its great we pull up to people at lights who are all rice'd out and he revs the van they rev back and we haven’t lost one yet we just punch it to the speed limit then watch the guy pass us and get really pissed.

I got guys that do that, they block off the road at both ends. then race...this street is not used at night and only mostly by trucks in the day!

And most guys that race only have just above stock cars!
