LOL I don't own one... yet. But I do follow the MINI boards and forums keeping tabs on just what I want to do with my lil' go kart.

I'm hoping to own one sooner than later, but looks like it will be later.

BTW, the Austin America and Austin Mini were the first production transverse engine front wheel drive cars ever.

Speaking of donuts....I think it was Eurotuner magazine (or one of those) that had a burnout contest. The MINI won hands down having the LONGEST burnout!

Tall 1st gear+ lots of torque (Cooper S) == burnout city.

Yep.

The original AUSTIN mini was a British car produced from 1968 to 1982. Over the years it had 4 different engines from 0.8 to 1.3 liters and powers from 34hp to 76hp.

I remember a brand new mini in 1982 would set you back about 4, 000 bucks. Today's Mini Cooper S is about $40,000 I think.

Sigh.

I still catch myself saying "Austin" mini. But sadly they aren't Austins anymore. BMW merely bought the name and concept from Austin Rover, or what is left of it.

I don't even know where these new ones are built.

The Cooper S isn't 40 large. MSRP for a 2004 Cooper S is $19,449 (edmunds.com). Of course there are options, but even stacking all of them would be nowhere near that expensive. Also, the new car is built in England. I'm pretty young, so I never had much experience with the original Mini, but from what I've heard, the new one really captures the spirit of the originals. Of course it has a stronger engine, it has airbags, an Air Conditoner etc. which means it has more stuff to push around.

I love mine. My Cooper S is the car that I used to beat the hell out of. Lots of burnouts, donuts, bat-turns, and dirt races. More fun that any other car I've ever had.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who is in love with this car. I see them all over town but alas, do not own one. It's gonna be the next car I buy hopefully.

Actually, I see big guys buying this car all the time. In fact it was recently voted one of the most spacious interiors. If you don't get the sunroof you gain at least 2" of headroom. The outside is very deceiving. Also, the car has similiar width and height as other cars, it's just the lenght of the car that is drastically smaller. Put a classic mini next to it and you will be suprised of the difference.

I was at the Autoshow in Toronto last year and the Mini Cooper SC or whatever, was 36 grand.

Add in tax and this and that, and you are looking at 40 G's.

Will be going to the auto show again next week and will make a piont of checking out the prices

www.miniusa.com has a configuration program. i can't get one to be anywhere close to 36grand....

Canadian money doesn't count. It's like pesos or something.

Even getting a Cooper S with the John Cooper Works package doesn't get close to 36Gs American dollars.

You should probably start to notice that the price of imports is rising rapidly. Get used to it, it's only going to get worse.

The Europeans have the right idea - one currency. I think we in North America should adopt a single currency, and if the US doesn't want to, well then, switch to Euros.

We'll see how much they are when i go next week and i will post and let you know.
